Chapter 1
Lily's POV:
I looked around trying to see what was out there. I saw nothing but decided to follow my instincts anyway, it never failed me before. I ran as fast as I could. I reached my father's grave panting and breathing hard; I sat beside it on the grass and hugged my knees.
I waited for something to happen. When nothing did, I was able to calm down a bit. I closed my eyes for a moment to catch my breath. After a while, I felt myself drifting off to sleep. Suddenly, I felt something on my neck, warm and humid. I was afraid to open my eyes and look at it.
Please let it be a lost cat or a cute little dog.
I thought to myself pleadingly. I usually didn't get that scared; I'm known to be strong but this was bigger than me; I couldn't fight my fears toward some unknown thing breathing on me. I sat still trying to ignore it, but the thing wouldn't go away. I was hoping it would get bored and lose interest in me thinking I was dead or something.
That idea fled from my mind when I felt something sharp and hard touch my arm. That moment I lost it, I couldn't take it anymore; I screamed like a banshee. I jumped up, jerking away from the thing.
I had my back turned not wanting to look at what was there. I should have run, but I didn't. Fear kept me rooted in my spot, I really wanted to look back and prove to myself that it was nothing and I was just being paranoid.
I took a few deep breaths and finally decided to put these fears to rest. Looking back, I gasped, quickly covering my mouth so I didn't scream again at the thing I was looking at.
This was unreal.
I blinked a few times while my brain tried to process what I was looking at. It couldn't be real, yet here I was staring at it watching me with silvery shiny eyes. I dropped my hand from my mouth and took a step backward not daring
to look away. It was so close to me I couldn't ignore all the details of its shape.
"That's impossible I must be hallucinating."
The mythical creature leaned its slim tall neck closer to me. Just looking at it astounded me; it was a beautiful, yet a frightening sight. I held out my hand just enough to scratch its head lightly. I fell asleep and now I'm dreaming all of this. There's no way it was real.
"You're a dragon," I whispered. Its rough scales beneath my fingertips confirmed it.
The creature's scales were shimmering in the sunlight. The colors were beautiful. Amethyst, azure, tipped with gold, but some scales reflected a shade of pink or purple. It had large bat-like wings that were clipped at the end. From the base of its wings, flecks of golden scales sparkled. The sunlight hitting the scales made them glow.
I continued to study the creature, taking in how calm it was. I stretched my hand, even more, feeling the rough scales beneath my palm. I kept going until I reached one unique scale. Its hue was green and it was at the bottom of the creature's throat. The feel of it was soft, a stark contrast to the roughness of the scales surrounding it. For some reason it reminded me of the green stone I saw that new kid wearing today. I shook the thought of my mind and smiled gently locking my gaze with the dragon.
"It's too dangerous for you to be out here." I heard myself saying to the dragon in a weak but concerned voice. "If anyone found you, they will try and capture you for experiments and that would be awful." Just the thought of someone poking and prodding such a wonderful creature made me sad.
I watched as the dragon laid on the filthy ground and gestured with its head for me to climb onto its back. Of course, I was afraid at first and hesitated a bit. If this was truly a dream then why the heck not. If I keep saying it's a dream then that means I'm not losing my mind and none of this is real. I took a deep breath and bravely climbed onto its back, holding tight to its neck as it leaped off the ground and took to the sky.
I had my eyes shut, afraid of looking down as I could feel a cold breeze brush my face and body. It felt amazing to have the wind brush my cheeks and mess my hair. I squeezed my eyes tightly as I felt the dragon go faster; I couldn't get myself to open them scared of what I might see.
I had never experienced anything like this before and I had a feeling that this was just the beginning of a wonderful journey.
He flew high in the sky between clouds where no one could see us for sure, it kind of reassured me. Somehow, I was still able to breathe. I didn't want to quest anything that was happening in fear of breaking whatever spell I was under.
This dragon was my secret and I didn't want to share it with anyone just yet. As selfish as it sounded, it actually is the most exciting thing I've been able to do for as long as I can remember. Imagine yourself flying between the clouds, feeling like you're walking on air. Would you like to share this with anyone? I doubt it.
I gained enough courage to slowly open my eyes. I looked at my surroundings, a smile spread across my face and I let go of his neck opening my arms widely to the air. Suddenly the dragon sped up his flapping and flew downward. I lost my balance and I slide from my position on his back. Somehow, I wasn't scared because I knew he would catch me. At that moment I just wanted to enjoy the feeling, and know what it's like to face death. Maybe I'll see my father.
I was very positive I had completely lost my mind.
I opened my eyes a few minutes later; I was close to hitting the ground. I smiled as I saw the dragon come at full speed to rescue me; I was on his back in a blink of an eye. The creature landed gracefully behind some high trees and bushes; out of sight. I climbed down and laid in the grass with my smile unwavering.
"Thank you, it was amazing" I whispered. I looked to my right side and saw nothing. I jumped to my feet and looked around, still nothing.
If I had doubted it before, it has been confirmed that it was all in my head and I just imagined it. Nothing really happened. I sighed and began to walk home feeling a little devastated and wishing it truly happened.
I made it home and thankfully my mom wasn't in the living room waiting for me. Once in my room I closed the door and sat at the bay window watching the sunset, admiring the crimson sky before my eyes. I wasn't sure what I was looking for, but a part of me needed a sign that what happened in the cemetery wasn't a hoax.
When darkness took over, I had lost hope of anything exciting to happen. I took my sketchpad from my desk and drew the beautiful creature I had dreamed of. I drew until I couldn't keep my eyes open, only to have the beautiful creature invade my dreams.
The cool breeze blowing against my face, and the sound of the rustling of papers from my sketchpad had woken me. I stretched and looked down in my lap smiling, but my smile vanished when I noticed there were no sketches of anything.
I was sure I sketched him I wasn't dreaming that too! I was getting mad when I noticed that my window was open. I know I didn't open it last night. Something weird was going on.
I shook my head as I got up and walked to the bathroom. I tried to take a quick shower, but I was over thinking what happened yesterday. The hot water did nothing to relax me as it usually does. My thoughts were everywhere. I was in such a daze I hadn't realized I was already dressed for the day. I walked into an empty kitchen with a note on the table near my breakfast.
"I have gone running, eat your breakfast before going to school, and try not to be late. I'll take your sister to see her doctor later this afternoon."
I sighed setting the note aside; I could feel my mom's forceful tone as if she was speaking to me directly.
"I'm not hungry!" I mumbled as I pushed my breakfast aside and walked out of the house locking it behind me.
I took the shortest way so I wouldn't be late. When I got to school, I made my way through the crowded halls until I reached my locker. It was there that I saw my sketch pinned to it. I looked around the hallway seeing if anyone was watching but found no one. I took the sketch down and saw there was a little note written in the corner.
"I'm sorry I left like that but I had to. And thank you for seeing me as beautiful as this."
I kept reading the words over and over in my head, it wasn't possible! Even if yesterday wasn't a dream, how could a dragon even be able to write?
"Wake up Lilly!" I scolded myself as I stuffed the paper in my backpack with the books I was going to need.
My mind was still in a daze from the recent events when the bell rang, startling me. Hearing a chuckle I looked behind me with a glare finding Derek, the new kid, laughing at me. Faster than a lightning bolt, I was in my seat as far away from him as I could get. My books open in front of me, and my eyes randomly reading the same line over and over.
Why in the world does he have this effect on me? And why the hell am I blushing! Ugh. I thought frustrated.
I was trying to focus on something so I could stop blushing when a masculine perfume hit my nostrils. It smelled so deliciously good that I couldn't help myself but look beside me only to find Derek had come to sit next to me. I gave him a look before I turned back to the blackboard trying to understand what the teacher was saying. It was horrible! I couldn't focus at all, why did he sit next to me?
Derek leaned over my bag swiftly and took out my sketch. "Nice drawing, you believe in dragons?" his voice was full of amusement. Even though he was making fun of me, I found him sexy and attractive.
Darn it! Act!
I heard my brain ordering me. I snatched the paper away from him and put back in my bag.
"Why should I even bother answering you?" I snarled at him trying to be mean but once again, I was surprised by his answer.
"You just did, and I like the way you answered me." He winked at me with a playful smile on his face.
I raised an eyebrow ready to tell him to shut up but I just focused back on the lecture. The rest of the day went in a blur, and Derek wouldn't leave me alone. He was always trying to make small talk when I was obviously trying to avoid him.
After school, I made my way to the cemetery. The whole way there I kept hearing strange noises. Yet, I didn't feel scared. Something was different within me; it was as if I got stronger for reasons even, I couldn't explain.
I sat near the tomb and looked around a bit disappointed when I didn't spot the blue dragon wandering here or there. I stayed there for a while talking to my dad, telling him everything about today and the day before, and even about Derek. When it started to get dark, I walked back home and wasn't surprised to see my mom's arms crossed waiting for me on the porch.
I listened to her babbling at how much she was worried and how reckless and irresponsible I was becoming. All I did was nod my head until she finished yelling.
I made my way to the kitchen grabbed an apple and walked to my room locking the door behind me, I wasn't in the mood to have my little sister jump around me like a little monkey.
I sat on my bed watching the ceiling for a while, and then remembered my sketch. I took it out and examined the handwriting, it looked so familiar but I couldn't remember whom it belonged to. After a while, I went to my window and looked at the edge of the forest. It was dark and scary and not a soul was in view.
I'm not so sure why I was even trying so hard. It is not like a dragon was just going to magically appear again.
I was about to turn around and walk to my bed when I saw the foliage move. I froze for a moment and looked at the surroundings, I saw something glitter and shine which made me open my window to have a clearer view. I couldn't make up the shape it was too far. I made a split decision to go there and check out who or what it was. I put on my coat and boots and climbed out of my window. I jumped down and landed with a thud.
I run as fast as I could until I reached the edge of the forest but saw nothing, disappointment ran through me and I turned to go back to the house. What was I thinking? Of course, there wouldn't be anything out here!
A noise stopped me, I felt something warm on my neck, it was very familiar. I turned briskly and smiled at the dragon. I hugged him and he let me climb on his back. The creature took me on a tour of the dead city, the sky was cold but his closeness somehow warmed me. The stars, there were so many of them; they gave me hope and new dreams to live for.
The next morning I woke up in my bed by the pounding on my door. I jumped to my feet and frowned.
"I'm really starting to feel crazy!" I told myself as I made my way to my door. Hanging on my mirror I noticed my coat.
"Maybe I did go out after all and it wasn't a dream. But why can't I remember coming back?" I sighed taking it down and threw it in a corner, then opened the door. "Good morning mom." I yawned and stepped away from the door.
"You're late Lily, and your friend is waiting for you downstairs." My mom said and I raised both eyebrows.
"What friend?"
"A boy named Derek," She said as she walked out.
