4- 👻Ghostliness👻
The relief that spread through me upon being able to talk to my bestie was unmeasurable. It felt like weight lifted from my shoulders.
"I should inform everyone, right? Even though they can't see you they would feel relieved knowing you are here," Drishti stated earnestly.
"Or they would think that you have lost your mental balance," I commented, rolling my eyes.
"Have I? Am I imagining you?" She asked worriedly.
"Well, I am really here but even if you were imagining me, your imaginary Maira would have given the same answer," I replied with a chuckle.
"Youuuu," she came to tackle me, but her body went pass mine and she fell on the floor with a loud screech.
"Oww oww," she cried, looking at her scraped elbow.
"Idiot. You won't be able to touch me," I said, barely stifling my laugh.
"Should have told me before I came near you," she spoke with an angry pout.
"Did you inform me before coming to tackle me? How was I supposed to foresee your actions?" I shrugged.
"With your superpowers," she spoke in a duh tone, while standing up from the floor.
"What superpowers? I think I had more powers as a human than as a ghost," I snorted while answering.
"So you don't have any power," she stated instead of asking and sat beside me humming.
"Yeah, I am useless. So, I need your help to find the murderer," I spoke looking at her hopefully.
"Murderer? You mean the truck driver? By the way, what the hell where you doing on the highway in the middle of the night?" She asked looking curious and angry.
"I don't even know where that story came from. I went to our regular 24/7 ice cream parlour which is nowhere near the highway," I muttered.
"Ice cream parlour? What are you saying? Tell me clearly what happened?" She asked looking confused as hell.
"I was practicing for the competition and got a message from an unknown number saying sorry and calling to meet at the ice cream parlour—"
Before I could complete, Drishti lost her temper and started shouting at me.
"How can you just believe an unknown number? You could have just ignored it. What should I do with you? Your stupidness took your life," she started shouting but then took deep breaths to calm down.
"The message mentioned the morning fight so I thought—"
"That it was from Uncle or Aman", Drishti completed in a knowing tone.
She knew me inside out plus I had called her yesterday to relay all the happenings of the morning. So she definitely knew what I was thinking upon receiving the message.
"Tell me what happened when you reached the ice cream parlour," she ordered fiercely, looking ready to go on a fight.
"I never reached. Do you remember the alley that comes just few minutes before the parlour? I was pulled in there and was beaten up," I spoke remembering the details.
"Did you see the person who pulled you?" She asked.
"Nope. If I had seen then I wouldn't need your help in this. That person covered my face with a bag and even tied my hands. They constantly hit me. It felt like a rod but I am not sure. Then I lost my consciousness. I was hoping to be in a hospital with a broken body but I woke up as a ghost," I finished pointing my hands towards my translucent body.
"I can't even imagine the pain you must have gone through. I seriously wanna hug you but your ghostliness won't allow me," she muttered with a sad pout.
"Ghostliness?" I chuckled hearing her words.
She made a bad face upon hearing my laugh and I gave her a more twisted face in response. We continued making faces at each other for few minutes, forgetting our worries.
"By the way, how did you reach the highway then?" She asked suddenly.
"No idea. I came to know about that when the police talked with Mom and Dad," I replied.
"Oh! Before I forget thank you so much for taking a stand on my behalf saying that I wasn't drunk," I thanked her as an after thought.
"We can't even check the message as your phone was broken beyond repair. You don't happen to remember the unknown number, do you?" She asked with raised eyebrows.
"Well I know the starting five numbers," I replied.
"Really? You never know any of our numbers. How did you manage to remember a number that too the one that messaged you for the first time?" She asked looking shocked.
"Well I do remember few numbers and I particularly remember this one because the starting numbers were same as Aman's mobile number. That was also one of the reason why I thought of believing the message, thinking that he must have taken a new sim and messaged me," I answered, remembering my surprise I felt when I had seen the number who messaged me.
"Ever heard of the app Truecaller or atleast cross checking with the person you think has messaged you. Nevermind, it's a waste to expect intelligence from you. Atleast now we have a lead. Though we don't have the full number but we have something," she taunted me.
"So where should we start from?" she asked looking at me with determination.
"With your dance practice," I answered with a smile.
"Huh?" she looked at me with wide eyes.
A smile crept on my face looking at her cute and innocent expressions.
"Competition is in two days. Let me help you get prepared. After this, we will solve the mystery behind my death," I said, standing up from the bed.
"But...," she tried protesting but I didn't hear any of it.
She was going to perform in my place and I would make sure that she performed her best.
"Come on, get ready," I ordered.
Shaking her head at me, she stood up and got ready in comfortable clothes and we danced until she was called for dinner.
