26-👻Seed of doubt👻
I covered my ears, not wanting to listen anything further.
"No no no, this couldn't happen. Drishti is over thinking."
I kept mumbling shaking my head frantically.
"Remove your hands from your ears and listen to me," she said, squatting down in front of me.
She was crying whereas my eyes were dry. Not because she was feeling more hurt but because of my stupid condition.
"ARGH! NO, NO," I screamed on the top of my voice, not ready to believe her.
"MAIRA. Come to your senses. I am not enjoying doing this too," Drishti hiccupped because of crying so much.
"Why? Why did you have this thought?" I asked in a resigned tone.
"Think about it Maira. They both fought with you and gave you warnings. Maybe Uncle didn't want to kill you. Maybe he tried to injure you so that you couldn't attend the dance competition but something went wrong and you died," Drishti explained her reasoning.
As soon as I heard her, I remembered my dad's words.
"THINK OF THIS PRACTICE AS YOUR LAST DANCE. I WILL BREAK YOUR LEGS BEFORE LETTING YOU ATTEND THAT DREADED COMPETITION."
"Or maybe it was Aman. Remember he said that no one would come to your funeral. He was so angry that day. And the unknown number. The starting five number matches with his contact. Maybe he had taken both the numbers together. It is easy to get matching numbers while purchasing a new Sim card," Drishti spoke out her another theory.
Yet again, I remembered the words he spoke before parting away from me.
"Death doesn't come with a warning."
Drishti's words made sense but one was my father and other was my love. I couldn't concentrate on anything else other than hoping that these were just assumptions.
"About your mom. You know she always agreed and followed your dad in everything, even when he was wrong," Drishti spoke adding salt to my wounds.
"What do we do? How are we gonna check if they are the murderers or not?" I asked.
I trusted them but we needed to check, so that I can prove Drishti's assumption wrong. I couldn't rule them out just like that if Drishti felt suspicious. She was there for me always and it was my duty to clear her doubts and also make me feel at ease.
Even though I knew they wouldn't do such a thing, a small seed of doubt was planted. We needed to hurry before that seed decided to grow.
"I have a plan. I will use the most common method to get their phones. You know the one where my phone's battery dies and I need to make an urgent call.
"I am hoping that we get that number by this method itself or else I would have to check further and find out where these three were at that night," Drishti said, as she moved from her lousy posture and sat straight with determination.
"My parents were gone for a party," I informed.
"Do you have the address? We might need to confirm whether there was an actual party? and if there was then whether they left early from that party?" Drishti asked.
"I have the address. Let's check that first and then we might have to ask around for Aman's whereabouts," I said, barely managing to stand up.
It was so funny, I didn't have an actual body. No heart, nothing but the pain was still there. I couldn't punch or kick when I was frustrated but I was able to sit on the floor, sofa or bed. I didn't feel the air but I was able to walk on the ground. I still didn't know how this ghost life was going to work but I needed to know how to stop from feeling the pain so that I would be able to stand strong when the murderer would come in front of me.
"Maira, I will go alone. Even when you knew other suspects, they weren't close to your heart unlike these three. You won't be able to check anything with your current state of mind," Drishti said and left, not bothering to wait for my response.
I sat back on the bed with a sigh. Drishti wasn't acting like her usual self or maybe I was overthinking because of my worsened condition.
