12- 👻Bribe👻
I wanted to take Aman in a tight embrace but I just couldn't. He kept talking about us, reminiscing, laughing, crying over our memories while I stood still, unable to cry or console him.
Unable to take it more, I left his house. Not having anything else to do, I walked towards the place where the competition would be held tomorrow. Drishti and other competitors would be there now, I should see if I could find out about anything.
Upon reaching, I saw them all- competitors and their coaches giving each other fake smiles and best wishes. Anyone with an eye could tell that no wished good for each other, let alone best.
They all dispersed after that and started talking about themselves.
"Maira's not alive. It surely increases the chance of my winning. I mean the back up Drishti won't be as good as Maira, right?" Ruhi spoke with her coach.
"Don't celebrate just now. With Maira we knew her strengths and weakness but this new girl, we don't have any information about her. Her coach will let her know about every participants weakness while we would be playing blind," her coach grumbled.
I snorted hearing their conversation. Drishti shouldn't lose, atleast not to someone like Ruhi.
I walked forward towards where Drishti was standing when I heard another conversation and this time it was between my major suspect and her coach.
"These girls are nothing in front of you. Now that Maira is gone, no one is capable enough to give you competition. Your win is guaranteed," Alisha's coach spoke with smugness.
Alisha shook her head, looking annoyed.
"What's the use of winning? Even if I win, everyone would say that I only won because Maira wasn't competing. There's no fun in winning when you don't have a strong competitor," Alisha said with a frown.
"You silly girl. Who cares what others think? Do you even know the benefits you would get by winning this competition? This win would skyrocket your career and mine too. So focus," her coach flicked her head.
Throwing her hands up in frustration, Alisha left the place, not bothering to respond.
Hearing them, my doubt went from Alisha to her coach but I can't cancel her name just now. We would have to search more aggressively once this competition gets over.
Drishti was still talking with the coach, so I stood quietly, not disturbing her.
After a while, coach left and Drishti turned.
"Aaaa!" She lost her balance upon seeing me standing.
Few people who were standing nearby helped her and she thanked them.
"We don't have to worry about this clumsy girl. We will surely win this competition," murmurs like this spread among the other competitors and Drishti turned red in embarrassment.
Drishti stomped away to a quiet place.
"Woah! What's the rush? Where are you running off to?" I asked going after her.
After looking here and there, she answered, "I came to a quiet place so people don't see me talking to thin air and put me in a mental hospital. And you...must you always startle me? Why can't you ever give me a notice that you are nearby?" She asked, placing her hand on her chest to calm down from the fright I gave her.
Smiling sheepishly, I rubbed the back of my head and muttered a small sorry.
She shook her head, looking like she has lost hope in me.
"Forget about it. Do you want to know, what I did? I paid the guards at the entrance," she squealed.
"You bribed them to win? But how would the guards help you?" I questioned with raised eyebrows.
"No idiot. I will win on my own record. I paid the guards to take the bags and cellphones of the competitors and their coaches, saying it's not allowed to take those inside, when they make an entry tomorrow. Afterwards, we will check through it to see if anyone has an extra phone or another sim," she explained, looking at me like I was the biggest fool in the world.
"I don't even know how to thank you. You are coming up with all such awesome plans while I just....," I trailed off, feeling pathetic.
"Don't belittle my best friend. She is doing the best she could, given her condition. We are a team Maira. It doesn't matter who comes up with a plan, all that matters is that we catch that bloody murderer," Drishti consoled and gave me courage.
I nodded, feeling like I could take the world.
"Drishti, I know you are really busy with all this but can you write a letter for me?" I asked in a hopeful eyes.
"Letter? To whom?" She asked curiously.
"Aman," I answered, remembering what I saw today.
"Gosh! You are dead yet you want to give him a love letter," she spoke in an incredulous tone.
"It's not a love letter," I deadpanned.
"Then?"
"It's a letter of closure."
