DISCOVERY OF THE BODIES

On April 4th, 1922, when it had been quite a while since the Gruber family was seen, the neighbours got concern and decided to check on them.

Three men decided to go to their property and find their whereabouts.

The probably were expecting the family to be on an unannounced vacation.

But what they actually saw, was something that would gaunt them for the rest of their lives.

They discovered four of the family members in the barn brutally slaughtered. An infant killed mercilessly in his cot and a maid murdered in her quarter.

The bodies in the barn were stacked on top of each other.

STRANGE FACTS SURROUNDING THE CASE & THE FAMILY

• The maid, Maria Baumgartner, had joined the family on the very same day, she and the rest of them were murdered.

• The previous housekeeper had left the house six months before the case, claiming that the Gruber house was haunted.

•The family had reported to have seen footprints in the snow leading towards the farm, but none were seen going back.( There were no footsteps going outside)

• Andreas Gruber had told his neighbours about missing keys and a strange newspaper in the house. The family even kept a gun to protect themselves. Due to these facts the people have speculated that the killer was living in the Gruber house from a long time.

• Not only this, the neighbours have reported seeing smoke rise from the house even after the murders had been carried away, but not yet discovered. This indicated that the killer was staying in the house for days after the murders were carried away.

• Apart from this, the old couple's ( Andreas and Cäzilia), daughter(Victoria) was a widow whose husband(Karl Gabriel) had died in World War I. And Victoria had given birth to an illegitimate son, Joseph in her husband's absence.

• Andreas and his daughter Victoria had been in an incestuous relationship. They had been warned by the court for this. But, they seem to have continued their relationship. And people speculate that Joseph was the son of Andreas and Victoria.

• Even though it is said that Karl had died in WW I , no body was ever found.

SUSPECTS

SUSPECT #1: KARL GABRIEL

Due to the fact that his body has never been found, it is speculated that Karl had not actually died in war.
He came back and murdered the family in rage of Victoria having an illegitimate child.

SUSPECT #2: LORENZ SCHLITTENBAUER

Lorenz, had a relationship with Victoria, after his wife had died.
It is said that he is the father of Joseph . Joseph's birth certificate has his initials, so it is quite possible.

Lorenz was one of the three men who discovered the bodies. He was the one who went to the house alone. As he went inside, he said that he was looking for his son.

My comments: I have absolutely no theories for this case. I don't think any of the above mentioned two suspects are the criminal.
Well, whatever it is, it sure as hell is creepy. Just imagine a killer living in your home without you knowing it.
