Little Girl

The cat ran. It jumped on rooftops, squeezed it's way through fences, and mentally mapped out the way to it's destination.

The bedroom of a little girl, no more than twelve.

It sat on the windowsill of the French child's bedroom. It sat and waited to be let in. Like every full-mooned night, it waited.

But something was different this time.

The cat paced. It pawed impatiently. It needed help. It knew this girl could help, if she was willing to follow it.

If she was brave enough.

The child stirred, chasing the cat from it's thoughts. She looked out the window where the cat was waiting. A smile crept over her plush, red lips.

She moved to the window and opened it, her pale face and night-black hair filling the cat with determination.

The creature bounced around the room eagerly, and went again to the windowsill.

The child said nothing, but gave a questioning look. She was mute, for there was cancer in her throat.

The cat repeated the action.

The child's eyes grew with understanding She followed the cat to the window and sat on it. The cat jumped to the roof a meter below. She almost did, but stopped.

She went back into the bedroom and reappeared moments later with a plush kitten in her arm. It was torn and dirty. It was loved.

Slowly but surely, the little cat guided the human child across the rooftops of Paris, taking care to pick out the safest routes for it's best friend. The girl was the cat's only friend.

Soon they came to the edge of a building. There was nowhere to jump and nowhere to climb. They had become stuck.

But the cat knew better.

It raised his voice. It called to the moon. It asked with a pleading song to provide for the cat and it's friend.

The moon answered.

It shone a single moonbeam upon the child, illuminating her perfect features. The girl awed at the moon. before her, in the same beam of moon, a man appeared.

He was tall and slender. His hair was like a frosted forest. His garments were blue and grey. he was the man from the moon.

He moved forward, shaking the girls hand and giving her a hug. The girl felt like she knew the boy somehow. Like he had always been there, watching over her, even when she couldn't see him, he was always taking care of her.

He reached for his pocket and pulled forth a silver pendant, engraved with pictures and speakings of the moon and stars themselves. He placed it around her neck.

When he had done his work he stepped back. He nodded to the cat as a sign of respect. Then he left. The moonbeam they had been standing in drew him back to the moon.

The girl held her kitten close to her heart. A cat tail swished behind her and ears twitched on her head. She needed not to touch them, she knew they were there.

She discovered that she could see something that wasn't there before. A bridge. It extended from the rooftop they were standing on, providing a safe path for both the cat and it's guided.

It went straight down to the window of the next building.

The cat stopped. It turned around and touched the tail of the child's small kitten with it's nose, turning it into a beautiful sword.

The girl felt it. It was big, but light.

They approached the window. As they did, the girl could hear a low growl coming from inside.

A monster sprung at her.

It was a wolf. It lunged for the girls mind.

With a strength she had no idea she contained, she swung her kitten blade, slamming it into it's side and leaving it whimpering on the bridge of light.

It dissolved into thin air. A tiny glowing orb pulsated in it's place, entering the window.

The child looked around. All around her at many windows were monsters. Each one was different. They snarled and growled at her, never leaving their posts.

She looked at the black cat, fear creeping into her heart.

The cat smiled, slowly turning invisible. It touched a paw to it's neck just before it vanished.

The girl clutched her amulet.

She ran along the bridge.

The next monster was a night-black yeti. It tried to dive for her legs, but it fell down on her sword. It dissipated, leaving a light in it's wake.

A little black orb was next to be defeated. It kept attacking from behind, aiming for the girl's backbone, but it never made it.

The next one tried to blind the child. A black, floating flashlight was cut completely in half, shattered glass in it's place. It's golden light was extremely bright.

With the strength of a bear and the speed of a cheetah, the girl destroyed the all the monsters she came across. They might have been big and mean and scary, but she was stronger. She was not afraid. She fought with all her might.

Then, while she was fighting a rhinoceros, a deafening screech filled the air.

She dropped her sword and covered her ears.

The monster shattered.

She looked up. Something was in the sky. It was big and left trails of smoke in the sky.

The stars and the moon had disappeared, veiled by a thick black fog.

Then she saw it.

The dragon.

It circled, it's screeches filling the air. She clutched her amulet.

It dove straight for her.

The last thing she saw was it's red eyes.

~~~~~
She was walking. The thing below her was gold. She was walking on a street paved with gold.
The black cat was beside her. It was leading her.
She had her kitten. She pulled it along by it's arm.
A golden door towered in front of her.
She gave the black cat one last hug, before creaking it open.
Through the door she could see many things. She saw beautiful creatures. She saw picnics and pancakes and bubbles and friends. Human friends. She had never had those before.
She looked at the black cat. It looked sad.
She gave it one last kiss on the forehead and a hug. She would miss the cat.
But she knew she would see it again.
She entered the door.
~~~~~

"You told us it was going away. You said that she wouldn't need any more treatment."

"That's what we thought. She showed absolutely no signs of ever having it."

"You lied!"

"I'm sorry Mr, Mrs, but you really never can tell with that dragon."
