Magic Lesson 1: Theory

Wednesday is waiting for the drill's go-ahead so that she can talk to the headmaster; she first wants to find out whether he is a valuable ally or will get in her way.

"Willa calm down, everyone is looking at you, why are you so agitated?"

Wednesday continues to keep her gaze fixed on the headmaster, as time goes on his anxiety rises. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times she has been anxious to talk to someone, and two of these involve her love for Enid.

"That man unnerves me, there is something about him.... I don't know.... He doesn't make me feel calm."

Enid worries. By now she has realized that few things really make Wednesday anxious.

"Okay then would it be better to avoid talking to him here in front of everybody? If you want to talk to him about what I don't think it would be better to do it in private?"

Wednesday sighs, sometimes Enid (Many more than the young Addams would ever admit) is her voice of reason.

"Well, then in the meantime we will take advantage of your visit to the wolf cells to have a look around, according to the sketch of a floor plan in Alvaro's journal there should be another underground floor and the entrance is right where the cages are."

Enid pulls out her cell phone and checks the photos, browsing until Wednesday stops her and points to the image.

"Anyone who understands anything about it is good.... First, we don't know if in the end this third dungeon was ever really built. Of course to have a look we don't miss anything, but there's no way to tell where the entrance actually is and you can't start destroing walls to find it"

Wednesday grimaces in disappointment; she may be impulsive, sadistic and chaos-loving, but certainly not as reckless.

"Please Enid, don't offend me, just because now I have the power of magic and destruction doesn't mean I'm going to use it inappropriately."

"And I'm happy about that."

Both Enid and Wednesday froze, neither of them had the slightest warning that Professor Silivieri was approaching them from behind and both had their gazes up for fear that someone would overhear them.

"If you want I can help you, I could teach Wednesday a spell to find hidden places."

The two girls turn and take a few steps to distance themselves from the young man.

"How do you evade a blood-moon werewolf and a witch, both with their guards up?"

Mark winks at him and smiles.

"Secrets of the trade, now, do you want to learn this spell or not?"

Wednesday looks at him suspiciously.

"Why do you want to help us? You may be here to tutor me, but I doubt you are here to help me break the rules."

He nods.

"Yes well, something is stirring and if what I've been told about you is true, you might get to the bottom of it before anyone else. Now we can't talk to headmaster Coleman about this or else he'll have you delete the photos, including the copies I assume you made...."

Wednesday lifts her chin to maintain her "superiority," she does not accept being so predictable.

"Now, it just so happens that the headmaster told us that we can use the dungeon of the werewolves for our magic classes, shall we go?"

"Okay but-"

"You are in no position to dictate orders or demand compromises. This year it's not just teachers you'll have to deal with, I think you've already figured out who the new dormitory leaders are."

Wednesday betrays herself, her gaze exuding astonishment and concern. Now that she pays attention, the other managers have also changed.

"You're not going to tell me that everyone in charge has been replaced by former military personnel?"

"That's right, headmaster Coleman has called in all the members of his old Green Beret unit. The second-in-command in Coleman may be there to check on you, but the others are not to be outdone and they aren'y professor of the school, so they will be much more vigilant about what's going on around the school."

Wednesday lets a sigh escape and casts a glance at the group formed by the ex-servicemen. One from each dormitory, four in total, two men and two women, former Green Berets and probably all outcasts. In a nutshell: Trouble.

"Enid can you tell me what kind of outcasts the other three are?"

Enid, who had been following all the talk between the two, shifts her attention in the direction in which Wednesday was looking.

"I need to get closer to them to know."

"Add it to the to-do list..... Now come on, I need to learn a new spell."

Without even beckoning or looking at Prof. Silivieri, Wednesday sets off toward the castle, with Enid following close behind after a moment of surprise, and so does the professor.

"So? What ideas did you get?"

Headmaster Coleman, after going around the students for a while and talking to the teachers, arrives to talk to his old team.

"General. My students are nothing interesting, normal outcast teenagers, a little restless but nothing unmanageable."

"The same applies to my boys as well, I've been keeping a particularly close eye on the student you pointed out to me: Thorpe. I heard him complaining about an unrequited crush from Addams, that's the only thing he talked about here the whole time he was in the dorm."

Headmaster Coleman nods, he had been the one to authorize werewolf leaders to use their hearing to spy on certain students, of course he had gotten special permission from the school superintendent, but it is for an important safety issue.

"I, on the other hand, can say that my girls are perfect, especially Bianca Barklay, she is unquestionably the queen of her dormitory and probably of the school, she has her secrets, but at the moment nothing that we would be interested in."

The headmaster nods again and finally looks toward Corporal Simmons, her report is the one which he is most interested.

"I also have nothing to report on the other students, but as for Wednesday and Enid Addams, it could be problematic. As we have been informed the young wolfgirl is really a blood moon werewolf so I can't spy on them with my hearing, she would notice right away, same thing for the room, I can't go in without her realizing it, in other words, the only way will be to act openly. As for their bonding, I can confirm what Morticia Addams said, they are companions, I clearly felt Enid's wolf threatening me for territory the moment I was near her, the girl probably doesn't realize it and that makes her potentially more dangerous than Wednesday. In case she feels that her companion is threatened or approached by others, she could transform and get out of control and in this form we could do nothing to stop her, only the general could confront her and have a real chance to win."

No one gets the idea that Simmons is overreacting, she will not be the most senior or the one with the most experience but there is a reason she was promoted instead of them, and no one doubts this decision.

"As for the joint task, Mark Silivieri, the pressure made by the Addams family to include him was not indifferent, even the superintendent could not object, now as seemingly qualified as he may be, he is young, impulsive and could bring trouble, which I have already had evidence."

Unfortunately, no one has been able to say anything about the young teacher, and the problem is this, he is perfect, his smell is perfectly normal, reflecting his nature as a human with supernatural powers like most Addams, as said by the headmaster he is impulsive and with little sense of danger and judgment, like most Addams.

"Very well, then that's all for the moment, go ahead."

*** *** ***

Enid has chills down her spine, the dungeon for wolves has always put anguish in her mind, she remembers when she visited it years before with her family, oxen, dreary and bare, the only thing inside the cages is a pile of straw and bowls carved into the rock for water and food. The girl is repulsed by the way her fellow wolves are treated, but she knows there is no other way, the only way to keep a wolf's rage from being unleashed is to let it go free, on the contrary by imprisoning it this one will go mad. Therefore there is no point in making the cells more cozy, the wolf would tear everything apart at the first full moon, the claw marks everywhere in the cells can confirm this.

"You wolves should have the right to run free. You are magnificent, elegant, fast predators, your ability to hunt in packs is amazing, you are perfect killing machines, deadly yet beautiful creatures."

Enid blushes, by now she has realized that Wednesday uses the excuse of praising werewolves only to give her veiled compliments-sometimes she doesn't even try and the compliments are about things that are too specific, whereupon even an outsider would understand that she is referring purely to Enid.

"Miss Addams answered herself, as much as you and the rest of our family would like to see wolves in the wild, the rest of the world wouldn't like it at all."

Wednesday puffs.

"Just because they are spineless and have no desire to live life to the fullest."

Professor Silivieri rolls his eyes as he enters what would have been their training room. A huge circular room in the center of the dungeon, a kind of amphitheater without the steps for the audience. Enid is sure this she had not seen during her visit, what looks like an arena covered with claw marks as well on the domed ceiling, the apex of which will reach about 10 meters high.

"What is this place?"

"I think I understand, Alvaro mentioned in his journals of the need for alpha wolves to fight for leadership of the pack despite the confinement, so they needed a place where they could fight safely."

Enid is incredulous.

"Don't worry Ms. Sinclair, it has been an abolished practice for years now."

"It's Addams now" "It's Addams now"

Wednesday and Enid smiled at each other after talking at the same time.

Even the professor smiles, such a connection can come in handy, both to them and to him.

"Very good, now before we start with the practice, I need to make sure you know the basics. First question, what is magic?"

Wednesday knew that something else was behind the prof's grant of help. But by now he might as well get as much out of this collaboration as possible.

"Magic is a mysterious force, the origin of which no one, not even the greatest scholars of the supernatural have ever been able to understand."

Mark nods.

"Why is magic classified into different categories and what are they?"

"Magic is classified according to what is required to use it or according to its effects. Basic or elemental magic, in modern times classified as emotional, activated and controlled by emotions, the elements an individual can use depend on what emotions he or she feels most intensely, and the more the individual can manage said emotions, the better he or she will control the magic."

The prof nods again.

"White magic, which draws its power from the environment and life, is mostly composed of healing, communication and in some cases animal and plant control magics. In the cases of some great magicians and witches, also the ability to transmute for some periods into other creatures of nature. It is perhaps the most complicated magic to use as one must have a heart of almost absolute purity and one must be totally in tune with nature.

In contrast there is sacrificial or blood magic, which draws its power from the death of other living things. It can emulate almost any other kind of magic, the problem lies in the fact that there are much more rules, this magic is also called fair exchange magic, the greater the magic the more victims there must be or rather, the more akin they must be to the magic. The human being is the most readily available creature with great affinity to magic, especially in recent centuries when magical creatures have almost completely died out. Even the mere practice of it in its minor form, that is, with blood sacrifices without the actual death of someone, is forbidden by anyone and any cult operating in the sunlight."

Another sign of assent.

"Then there is conjuration magic, or sealing or even runic magic, through the use of particle magical materials one can draw symbols that lead to the materialization of objects, energy or even life forms. They can also have the reverse function of sealing something or someone in certain objects or places. This is the most mysterious form of magic, after all, we are talking about creating matter, energy and life out of nothing, albeit temporarily. Again, no one has never come close to generating a valid hypothesis."

Moment of silence, only one type of magic is missing-if sacrificial magic is viewed poorly because of the revulsion involved in using it, dark magic is something else entirely.

"Finally, there is dark magic, the only type of magic that sacrificial magic cannot fully emulate, is divided into: Destruction, the ability to generate mysterious power that depending on the formula used can result in various effects, but never beneficial ones. Illusion, the ability to project images from your mind and make reality appear different from the real thing to others. Mental, the ability to enter the minds of others, probing them to a depth that even the victim cannot access. The scariest part is that he can also control them. Finally, the most misunderstood magic of all, Necromancy, the ability to summon the dead and control them. But also the ability to control disease and pestilence, to turn water into poison. To corrupt good and make it evil.

But the focus of dark magic is what it needs to be activated, nothing, dark magic is something you can learn if you have a minimum of affinity for magical arts."

The professor is more than satisfied but knows that there is one key point he missed.

"It is on this last point that you are wrong."

The young woman looked curiously at the teacher, she had studied through the Addams' forbidden library books, which notion did she misunderstand?

"You see magic is sentient."

Now Wednesday is even more curious.

"Not sentient as you understand it of a human or animal mind, let's say its intellect is limited to choice. Now you have read the Addams Library books and tell me how many evil wizards and witches using white magic have existed?"

The girl twists the magician, an evil person cannot use white magic, the question makes no sense.

"A lot of people are wrong here, white magic takes power from life, but think of an environmentalist, a real one not the crazy people who first drive miles on oil vehicles, don't recycle etc etc, and then go protesting for the environment. Tell me why a real environmentalist would not use his powers to protect nature by hurting humans, one of the basic powers of white magic is the power to control plants and animals, so why not sic them on humans? Simple because white magic only chooses those who do not contemplate hurting others or doing even acts of violence, or using nature as a weapon, even if only for a threat.

A more important example comes from sacrificial magic, this power does not care what you do with what it gives you in return, it only cares about receiving more death. This is a magic that even a small child can potentially use, but this decides to respond only to those who do so for evil acts or power, this is because sacrificial magic can only be used to bring more death, in modern times studies have been done, the same person used the same sacrificial magic to summon a blade, the first time when it was successful, the man had focused on using the blade to kill an animal, the second time when he focused on having a blade to free an animal that was choking to death on a rope, the spell did not work. They have done hundreds of these tests, and the conclusion is that sacrificial magic only works when those who use it only want to use its power to bring more death. That is why the name of fair exchange magic is unfounded and that is why it is so hated.

Summoning magic is peculiar, in fact anyone can take a chalk of magical material and draw a rune, but not everyone can activate it, only those who have an already existing magical affinity can, as users of elemental magic, white magic and dark magic, while sacrificial magic as you can well imagine, they do it through a sacrifice.

But now we come to dark magic, or rather neutral magic, dark magic, which is also the magic Goody was using, cannot be used by just anyone, there of must be born with the gift of magic, it was people like Crackstone who branded it as dark and evil. They claimed that everyone could use it in order to be able to eliminate those who had the gift without too much trial and also to be able to accuse those they needed to get out of the way of making use of it, after all, all other kinds of magic generate traces or clues by which it can be detected, users of elemental magic are immune to their element, those who are akin with fire do not get burned, those with water do not drown, those with wind do not get lashed by it, who with earth will never be crushed by it. Sacrificial magic can be traced to its user through certain alchemical reagents, same thing for summoning magic.

Dark magic on the other hand does not, it has no price, no conditions of use it is like a gift you are born with and like a muscle you have to train it in order to use it to its fullest, everyone is born with a different affinity but potentially those who have the gift can use all subtypes of dark magic. Some modern scholars from my branch of my family, which has never stopped practicing it, speculate that from a genealogical point of view all those who possess the gift are all descended from the same entity, this is because all consanguineous members of the Addams Family, if they have any potential to use dark magic at all."

Wednesday is motionless, all that knowledge pours into her mind like a river and she takes it in as if her life depended on it, none of it is even hinted at in the books, but it all adds up, the teacher is right, there is often talk of evil cults that used sacrificial magic to spread death, never ever of someone using it to bring rain to a country dying of drought. There is talk of white wizards and witches using their powers to heal and save even those who do not deserve it, but never of anyone who used white magic for acts of violence. The opposite the dark magic.... One remembers the story of a Necromancer who in despair over the loss of his family, used his powers to try to get them back and when he succeeded, people learned about it and killed the Necromancer's family again, who in revenge created an army of the undead, it was a real plague.

"Now that you know, it's time to spell out your first spell. Dark magic, subtype mental magic, physical expansion of the mind!"

Wednesday turned a happy and disturbing smile on her teacher, who reciprocated with in the same way. Poor Enid, already with a steaming head from information overload, is terrified of what these two might be up to together.

Out-of-phase author angle

Perhaps some people will find it boring, but I needed to clarify the magic system of my fan fiction, as I have said in the past you risk creating omnipotent mechanics if you do something too superficial.

No contract point between Enid and Wednesday for today, I realized I was being repetitive, keep in mind I had already written almost 30 points but re-reading them I realized many were the same but written differently. So here is a nice contest for you, shoot new points that you think Wednesday and Enid might want in a girlfriend contract.

See you soon :)
