( THE GETAWAY )
A late-middle aged man, Dr. Jennings, walking down the sidewalk. His cell phone rings; he picks it up. "Hello. Yeah. All right." Dr. Jennings' face; he lowers the phone slowly.
A city bus with a triangular Blue Ridge logo on the front passes. He smiles, turns, and continues walking.
Across the street he enters a sports equipment shop and approaches a man leaning against a counter reading 'Guns' magazine. "Afternoon, Dennis." He says.
"Hey, Doc." Dennis says.
"I'd like to look at a gun." Jennings says.
Dennis is laughing. "Yeah, right, doc." Dr. Jennings just looks at him. "Seriously?" He crosses behind the counter in front of a display of guns.
Dr. Jennings looks around, then points. "That one." He says. Dennis unlocks the display and pulls out the indicated gun.
"Okay. That's a turkey hunter, twelve gauge, pump action. Doesn't leave enough turkey behind, if you ask me." Dennis says.
"What sort of shells does it use?" Jennings asks.
Dennis pulls a box from under the counter. "Right here. I'm taking the boys up to the cabin this weekend if you're uh...I mean if you think you might like to take up the sport." He says.
Dr. Jennings takes a shell and starts to fit it into the gun. "Thanks, but no. You know guns make me nervous, always have. This one goes in here, right?" He asks.
"Whoa, Doc! No, you can't load a weapon on the premises, it's illegal!" Dennis yells.
"It's okay, Dennis."
"No, no."
"It's okay, Dennis. It's all gonna be okay." Jennings turns the gun on Dennis and fires.
"Doc!" Dennis is hurled against the wall as the blast hits him. The other customers start to panic.
"No, no, it's, it's okay. It's okay. It's all gonna be okay." Jennings then presses the shotgun against his chin. The shotgun goes off again and the sink is splattered with blood.
MOTEL BATHROOM
[ ☾]
Sam gasps. He is leaning over the sink in a dingy bathroom, the water running. White flashes from the previous scene cut across his vision. "No..."
He runs a hand under the water and washes his face, scrubbing the hand through his hair. As he shuts the water off and looks up into the mirror, the door bursts open to reveal Dean. "Sam, come on, zip it up. Let's hit the...road. What?"
Dean is driving the Impala, Sam in the passenger's seat and Elena in the back, down a dark two-lane road. The radio is playing. Radio Announcer: Rockin' Nebraska. "Your source for the classics, all night long." It says.
"I don't know, man, why don't we just chill out, think about this." Dean says.
Sam shuts off the radio. "What's there to think about?" He asks.
"I just don't know if going to the Roadhouse is the smartest idea." Dean says.
"Dean, it's another premonition. I know it. This is gonna happen, and Ash can tell us where." Sam says.
"Yeah, man, but..." Dean starts.
"Plus it could have some connection with the demon. My visions always do." Sam says.
"That's my point. There's gonna be hunters there, I don't know if, if, if going in and announcing that you're some supernatural freak with a, a demonic connection is the best thing, okay?" Dean says.
"So I'm a freak now?"
Dean slaps Sam on the thigh. "You've always been a freak."
ROADHOUSE
[ ☾]
Jo is playing a shooter arcade game as an older man watches. She hits every target, and he groans. "Damn, little lady, that was my room money." He says.
Jo takes the money he pulls out. "Well, I guess you're taking a truck nap tonight." She says.
As she walks away, pleased with herself, Ellen walks over. "Oughta check the high scores before you put your money down." She presses a button on the game and a list of high scores - all reading 'Player: Jo' scrolls across the screen. "You went and got yourself hustled, Ed." Ellen says.
Dean, Elena and Sam enter, passing two men at a table cleaning weapons. Dean almost runs into Jo, who stops, smiling. "Just can't stay away, huh?" She says.
"Yeah, looks like. How you doin', Jo?" Dean asks.
"Where's Ash?" Sam asks hurriedly.
"In his back room." Jo says.
Sam brushes past her. "Great." He says and Elena follows.
"And I'm fine..." Jo starts.
"Sorry, he's, we're...kind of on a bit of a timetable." Dean says.
Sam and Elena approach a rough wooden door with a sign hanging on it that reads: Dr. Badass Is In. Sam is knocking on the door. "Ash? Hey, Ash?" He asks.
Dean is also knocking. "Hey, Dr. Badass?" He asks.
The door is unlatched and opened a crack to reveal Ash, who is naked. Dean and Elena avert their eyes. "Sam? Dean? Sam and Dean. And that one girl..."
"Elena." Elena says roughly.
"Hey Ash. Um. We need your help." Sam says.
"Well, hell then. Guess I need my pants." Ash says and shuts the door. Sam, Elena and Dean go back to the Roadhouse.
Later, Ash is sitting at a table with his laptop open, looking at the hand-drawn sketch of the bus logo from Sam's vision. Sam sits across from him and Dean and Elena stand behind. "Well, I got a match. It's the logo from the Blue Ridge bus lines in Guthrie, Oklahoma." Ash says.
"Okay. Do me a favor–check Guthrie for any demonic signs, or omens, or anything like that." Sam says.
"You think the demon's there?" Asks Ash.
"Yeah, maybe."
"Why would you think that?" Ash asks.
"Just check it, all right?" Dean asks and Ash gives him a Look.
Dean and Sam frown at each other. "No, sir, nothing. No demon." Ask says.
"All right, try something else for me. Search Guthrie for a house fire. It would be 1983, fire's origin would be a baby's nursery, night of the kid's six month birthday." Sam says.
Ash looks at him, startled, and Dean looks around to check for eavesdroppers. Jo, cleaning a table nearby, is watching them. "Okay, now that is just weird, man. Why the hell would I be looking for that." Ash asks.
Sam pulls out a beer bottle and sets it next to the laptop. "'Cause there's a PBR in it for ya." He says.
"Give me fifteen minutes." Ash says.
Later, Sam is sitting at the bar and Elena joins him and sits down. "You alright?" She asks.
"Yeah." Sam says. "It's just, I have this weird feeling in my gut. Like something bad is about to happen."
"It might just be the beer. You've had one too many." She says smiling.
Sam smiles back. "Maybe. Hey, I've got a question." He says.
"Shoot." Elena says while sipping her beer.
"In an alternate universe, if we were...normal, would you think we'd have a chance?" Sam asks.
Elena thinks real hard. "Honestly, I don't know. But I like reality." She gets out of her seat and begins walking.
"Just so you know," Sam says and Elena stops in her tracks without turning around. "I'm not a quitter." He says and Elena smiles and walks away.
Meanwhile, Jo presses a few buttons on the jukebox and the opening chords to REO Speedwagon "Can't Fight This Feeling" play.
Dean, also sitting at the bar, looks horrified. Jo carries a tray to the bar and sets it down, catching his eye.
I can't fight this feeling any longer.
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow. What started out as friendship, Has grown stronger. I only wish I had the strength to let it show. I tell myself that I can't hold out forever. I said there is no reason for my fear. Cause I feel so secure when we're together. You give my life direction, You make everything so clear...
"What?" Jo asks.
"REO Speedwagon?" Dean asks
"Damn right REO. Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart." Jo says.
"He sings it from the hair. There's a difference." Dean says.
Jo smiles. "That profile you've got Ash looking for?" She asks.
"Hmm."
"Your mom died the Same way, didn't she? A fire in Sam's nursery?" Jo asks.
"Look, Jo, it's kind of a family thing." Dean says.
"Elena's not family. Besides, I could help." Says Jo.
"I'm sure you could. But we've got to handle this one ourselves. Besides, if I ran off with you I think your mother might kill me." Dean says.
Ellen, cleaning glasses behind the bar, looks at him. He smiles nervously. "You're afraid of my mother?" Jo asks, laughing.
"I think so." Dean fakes a smile.
Sam hurries up behind Jo. "We have a match. We've gotta go." He says.
"All right, Jo. See you later." Dean says and leaves, Elena follows.
In the Impala, strains of "Can't Fight This Feeling" from the previous scene continue in Dean's voice, singing a capella.
"And even as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight You're a candle in the window on a cold dark winter night And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might..." Dean sings.
Elena is in the back smiling. "You're kidding, right?" Sam asks.
"I heard the song somewhere, I can't get it out of my head, I don't know, man. Whaddya got?" Dean asks.
Sam is looking at a stack of paper. "Andrew Gallagher. Born in eighty three, like me. Lost his mother in a nursery fire exactly six months later, also like me."
"You think the demon killed his mom?" Elena asks.
"Sure looks like it."
"How did you even know to look for this guy?" Dean asks.
"Every premonition I've had, if they're not about the demon they're about the other kids the demon visited. Like Max Miller, remember him?" Sam asks.
"Yeah, but Max Miller was a pasty little psycho." Dean says.
"The point is he was killing people. And I was having the Same type of visions about him. And now it could be happening all over again with this Gallagher guy."
"How do we find him?" Elena asks.
"Don't know. No current address, no current employment. He still owes money on all his bills–phone, credit, utilities..." Sam starts.
Dean looks over. "Collection agency flags?" He asks.
"None in the system."
"They just let him take a walk?" Elena asks.
"Seems like it. There's a work address from his last W-2, about a year ago. Let's start there."
COFFEE SHOP
[ ☼ ]
Sam and Dean, in suits, are sitting at a table. Elena wears faux glasses and a cute red dress. "You won't get anything out of Andy, guys. I'm sorry, but they never do." A waitress says to them.
"'They'?" Sam asks.
"You're debt collectors, right? Once in a while they come by. I don't know what Andy says to them, but they never come back." She says.
"Actually we're, we're Lawyers. Representing his Great Aunt Leta. She passed, God rest her soul, and left Andy a sizable estate." Elena lies easily.
"Yeah. So are you a friend of his?" Sam asks.
"I used to be, yeah. I don't see much of Andy anymore." The waitress says.
A guy hears their conversation and walks over. "Andy? Andy kicks ass, man." He says.
"Is that right?" Dean asks.
"Yeah. Andy can get you into anything. He even got me backstage at Aerosmith once, it was beautiful, bro." He says.
The girls turns to him. "How about bussing a table or two, Weber?" She asks.
"Yeah. You bet, boss." Webber says and walks away.
"Look, if you want to find him, try Orchard Street. Just look for a van with a barbarian queen painted on the side." She says.
"Barbarian queen?" Dean asks.
"She's riding a polar bear. It's kind of hard to miss."
ORCHARD STREET
[ ☼ ]
As Dean, Elena and Sam stake out Orchard Street, watching the aforementioned van-with-barbarian-queen, the song "Stonehenge" from Spinal Tap plays.
"I'm sorry, I'm starting to like this dude. That van is sweet." Dean says smiling.
Elena shakes her head. "You're such a dork." She says.
Dean looks at Sam. "What's wrong?" He asks.
"Nothing." Sam replies.
"Sam, you look like you're sucking on a lemon, what's going on?" Dean asks again.
"This Andrew Gallagher, he's the second guy like this we've found, Dean. Demon came to them when they were kids, now they're killing people." Sam says.
"We don't know what Andrew Gallagher is, all right? He could be innocent." Dean says.
"My visions haven't been wrong yet." Sam says.
"What's your point?"
"My point is, I'm one of them." Sam says.
"No, you're not." Elena says.
"Guys, the demon said he had plans for me and children like me." Sam pointed out.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, maybe this is his plan, maybe we're all a bunch of psychic freaks, maybe we're all supposed to be—" Sam starts.
Elena is disappointed. "What, killers?" She asks angrily.
"Yeah." Sam says.
"So the demon wants you out there killing with your minds, is that it?" Dean asks. "Come on, give me a break. You're not a murderer, Sam! You don't have it in your bones."
"No? Last I checked, I kill all kinds of things." Sam says.
"Those things were asking for it. There's a difference." Dean looks out the window, away from Sam.
Andy exits a building, wearing a pajamas and a long satin robe embroidered with dragons. "Got him." Sam says.
A woman in a second-story window waves to Andy, who blows her a kiss. Andy greets a man on the street, who smiles at him and hands Andy his coffee.
Further along, Andy greets Dr. Jennings and shakes his hand. "That's him. That older guy, that's him, that's the shooter." Sam says.
"All right, you keep on him, I'll stick with Andy. Elena go with Sam. Go." Dean says and Elena stays put.
"Don't you think that'd be risky? He's know someone's following." Elena says.
Dean thinks. "Alright, you stay. Dam go." Sam gets out of the car and follows Dr. Jennings on foot.
Andy gets in his van and drives off, Dean following in his car. A few minutes later, Andy stops and gets out of the van, walking back to Dean, who tucks a handgun into his jacket.
"Hey." Andy says.
"Hey hey." Dean replies.
"This is a cheery ride." Andy says.
"Yeah, thanks." Dean says.
Elena looks between both of them, noticing that there was something off about Dean. He wasn't usually this friendly to strangers.
"Man, the '67? Impala's best year if you ask me. This is a serious classic." Andy says.
"Yeah. You know, I just rebuilt her, too." Dean says smiling.
"Dean..." Elena says, but he ignores her.
"Yeah?" Andy says.
"Yeah, can't let a car like this one go." Dean says and pats his Impala.
"Damn straight. Hey. Can I have it?" Andy asks.
"Sure, man." Dean gets out of the car, smiling, to let Andy in the driver's side.
"Dean, what the hell?!" She asks and gets out also.
"Sweet." Andy smiles.
"Hop right in there. There ya go." Dean says.
"Take it easy." Andy says.
"All right." Dean says. Andy drives off in the Impala, leaving Dean standing in the street, looking confused.
