( AS I LAY DYING )

Elena was now in a Mazda that she had Hotwired. She learned from the best...She was just about to leave Nebraska when she got a phone call. "Dean, I told you-" She starts.

"Is this Elena?" An unknown voice says.

"Yes. Who am I speaking to?" She asks.

"I'm a nurse in Nebraska. I'm calling because you were the first contact in this boys phone." She says.

Elena pulls to the side of the road. "What happened?" She asks.

"There's been a car accident." She says and Elena blanks. She hangs up, hitting the gas and speeding down the highway. She was going to find her boys.

DESERTED ROAD
[ ☾]

"Bad Moon Rising" is still playing on the radio as we zoom in on the wrecked Impala. The demon-possessing-a-truck-driver steps out of his truck and walks over. John and Dean, both unconscious, but Sam, who swallows, is barely awake.

The demon pulls the driver's side door off its hinges to reveal Sam pointing the Colt at him. "Back. Or I'll kill you, I swear to god." He says.

"You won't. You're saving that bullet for someone else." The Demon says.

Sam cocks the gun. "You wanna bet?" He asks.

It smiles; the black demon-ichor pours out of the man, who collapses. Sam uncocks the gun, drops his head back in relief. "Oh my god!" The Man says.

      "Dad?" Sam asks.

"Did I do this?" The Man asks.

      "Dad! Dean? Dean!"

A rescue helicopter descends to the site, and all three are being loaded onto stretchers. John and Dean are still unconscious, Sam is awake. "Man Significant passenger side intrusion. Unresponsive. BP is 180 over 60, heartrate 95, 95." A paramedic says.

"Tell me if they're okay!" Sam yells.

"You have to stay still!" A Woman Paramedic demands.

      "Are they even alive?"

HOSPITAL
[ ☼ ]

In a room, Dean sits up, works his jaw, gets out of bed. He is wearing a white t-shirt, blue hospital pants, and nothing else. He goes into the hallway. "Sam? Dad? Anybody?" He calls out.

Dean goes down the stairs to the front of the hospital and finds a nurse's station. "Excuse me. Hi. I, uh, i think I was in a car accident, my dad and my brother, I just need to find them." Dean says, but the nurse is unresponsive. "Hello?"

He starts snapping his fingers. He goes back upstairs, panicked, and sees his own body on the bed, intubated and dying. Still reeling from the shock of seeing his unconscious body, Dean turns, relieved, as Sam enters.

Sam stops at the door and stares at his brother's body, breathing heavily. "Sammy! You look good. Considering." Dean says.

      "Oh, no." Sam says.

"Man, tell me you can hear me." Dean says. "How's dad? Is he okay? Come on, you're the psychic. Give me some ghost whispering or something!"

The Doctor enters. "Your father's awake. You can go see him if you like."

      "Thank god." Says Dean.

"Doc, what about my brother?" Sam asks.

"Well, he sustained serious injury: blood loss, contusions to his liver and kidney. But it's the head trauma I'm worried about. There's early signs of cerebral edema." The Doctor says.

      "Well, what can we do?"

"Well, we won't know his full condition until he wakes up. If he wakes up." The Doctor says.

      "If?" Sam asks.

      "I have to be honest—"

"Oh, screw you, Doc, I'm waking up." Dean says.

"Most people with this degree of injury wouldn't have survived this long. He's fighting very hard. But you need to have realistic expectations."

"Come on, Sam. Go find some hoodoo priest to lay some mojo on me. Sam?" Dean asks.

JOHN'S RECOVERY ROOM
[ ☼ ]

John is lying in a hospital bed, his arm in a sling. Awkwardly one-handed, he pulls something out of his wallet. "Here. Give them my insurance." John says.

Sam takes the card John gives him, smiling as he reads it. "Elroy McGillicutty?" Sam asks.

"And his two loving sons. So, what else did the Doctor say about Dean?" John asks.

"Nothing. Look. The Doctors won't do anything, then we'll have to, that's all. I don't know, I'll find some hoodoo priest and lay some mojo on him." Sam says.

      "We'll look for someone."

      "Yeah." Sam replies.

"But Sam, I don't know if we're gonna find anyone." John says.

"Why not? I found that faith healer before." Sam says.

"Right, that was, that was one in a million." John points out.

"So what? Do we just sit here with our thumbs up our ass?" Sam asks angrily.

"No, I said we'd look. All right? I'll check under every stone." John pauses. "Where's the Colt?"

Sam is angry now. "Your son is dying, and you're worried about the Colt?" He asks.

"We're hunting this demon, and maybe it's hunting us too. That gun may be our only card." John says.

"It's in the trunk. They dragged the car to a yard off of I-83." Sam says.

"All right. You've gotta clean out that trunk before some junk man sees what's inside." John says.

"I already called Bobby. He's like an hour out, he's gonna tow the Impala back to his place." Sam says.

"All right. You, you go meet up with Bobby. You get that Colt, and you bring it back to me. And you watch out for hospital security." John says.

"I think I've got it covered." Sam gets up to leave; John stops him, picking up a sheet of paper.

"Hey. Here. I made a list of things I need, have Bobby pick them up for me." John says.

Sam looks at the list. "Acacia? Oil of Abramelin? What's this stuff for?" He asks.

      "Protection."

"Hey, Dad? You know, the demon, he said he had plans for me, and children like me. Do you have any idea what he meant by that?" Sam asks.

"No, I don't." John says. Sam leaves, shutting the door to reveal Dean, who has been leaning behind it.

      "Well, you sure know something."

Sam walks out of Johns room and down to the receptionist desk. He looks up and sees a familiar face, stopping in his tracks. "Elena." He says.

"I heard about what happened. I needed to know that you guys were okay." She says as Sam steps towards her. "I know you guys are probably mad-"

She gets interrupted because Sam strides over to her and envelopes her in a hug. "I'm glad you're here." He says into her shoulder. They hug for a while, taking it all in.

Elena pulls away. "Where's Dean?" She asks.

"He's uh," Sam starts. "He has it bad. The Doctors say he's not gonna make it." Tears well up in Elena's eyes.

"Can I go see him?" She asks.

"Yeah, but you're gonna have to lie. Immediate family only." Sam says.

"It's not like I haven't lied before." Elena says. Sam smiles, then walks away. "Where you going?"

"Have to go meet an old friend. I'll be back." Sam says and Elena nods. "And Elena?"

Elena turns back around to face him. "Yeah?"

"It's good to see you. Really good."

Elena smiles and heads to Dean's hospital room. Sam smiles after her.

DEAN'S RECOVERY ROOM
[ ☼ ]

Elena is about to walk into Dean's room when a nurse stops her. "Excuse me, immediate family only." She says.

      "I'm his fiancé." Elena lies.

"Well, he's in comatose right now, but you can still go in and see him." She says.

Elena smiles sadly. "Thank you." She twists the door knob and steps inside the room. When she looks at what is ahead of her, more tears well up. "Oh Dean."

What she doesn't know is that he was in the same room with her, he just couldn't be seen. Elena walks up to his hospital bed and places her hand in his. "I'm sorry I left you guys. Technically, it's all my fault." She says.

"What?" Dean asks, not realizing that Elena couldn't hear him.

"If I could just find a way—" She says.

      "What are you doing here?"

Elena turns around to see John behind her with a grim look in his face. "I just came back from a hunt. The hospital called me." She lied and hopped out the chair.

"We got in a bad car accident." John says.

"What happened?" Elena asks, but she already knew the answer. It was the Yellow Eyes Demon's work.

      "Some nasty demons." John says.

"Is he gonna make it?" Elena asks.

      "We don't know."

JUNKYARD
[ ☼ ]

Sam looks down at the mangled car. Bobby is there as well. "Oh man, Dean is gonna be pissed." Sam says.

"Look, Sam. This... this just ain't worth a tow. I say we empty the trunk, sell the rest for scrap." Bobby says.

"No. Dean would kill me if we did that. When he gets better he's gonna want to fix this." Sam says.

"There's nothing to fix. The frame's a pretzel, and the engine's ruined. There's barely any parts worth salvaging." Bobby says.

"Listen to me, Bobby. If there's only one working part, that's enough. We're not just going to give up on..." Sam drifts.

Bobby speaks quietly. "Okay. You got it." He says.

"Here, uh, Dad asked for you to get this stuff for him." Sam hands over the list.

Bobby looks at it, frowning. "What's John want with this?" He asks.

"Protection from the demon?" Sam says. Bobby gives him a look. "What?"

"Nothing, it's just, um," Bobby starts.

      "Bobby? What's going on?"

In Dean's Room, John is sitting by Dean's bed, also with Elena. Dean stands nearby, unseen.

"Come on, Dad. You've gotta help me. I've gotta get better, I've gotta get back in there. I mean, you haven't called a soul for help. You haven't even tried." Dean pauses. "Aren't you going to do anything? Aren't you even going to say anything? I've done everything you've ever asked me. Everything. I have given everything I've ever had. And you're just going to sit there and you're going to watch me die? I mean, what the hell kind of father are you?"

He pauses, hearing something. "What is that?" Dean goes into the hallway and a spirit whooshes past him. He jumps back. "I take it you didn't see that."

Dean stalks the spirit down the hallways. He sees it go into a back hallway where a woman is lying on the floor, choking. "Help! Help!" She yells.

"Hey! I need some help in here!" Dean yells.

"I can't... breathe!" She pants loudly, trying desperately to breathe, then goes silent.

Dean, leaning over her, looks on helplessly. John goes back to his room, but Elena stays back. Sam stalks into the room with a duffel bag. Dean meets him at the door and starts trying to talk to him.

"Sammy! Tell me you can friggin' hear me, man, there's something in the hospital. Now, you've got to bring me back and we've got to hunt this thing." Dean says.

      "You're quiet." John says.

Sam turns, fuming, and hurls the bag onto the bed with a crash. "Did you think I wouldn't find out?" He asks.

"What are you talking about?" John asks.

"That stuff from Bobby, you don't use it to ward off a demon, you use it to summon one. You're planning on bringing the demon here, aren't you? Having some stupid macho showdown?!" Sam yells just as Elena enters the room.

"What's going on?" She asks, but both Sam and John ignore her.

"I have a plan, Sam." John says.

"That's exactly my point! Dean is dying, and you have a plan! You know what, you care more about killing this demon than you do saving your own son!" Same yells.

"No, no, no, guys, don't do this!" Dean yells.

"Do not tell me how I feel! I am doing this for Dean." John says.

"How? How is revenge going to help him? You're not thinking about anybody but yourself, it's the Same selfish obsession!" John yells.

"Come on guys, don't do this!" Dean yells.

"You know, it's funny, I thought it was your obsession too! This demon killed your mother, killed your girlfriend. You begged me to be part of this hunt. Now if you'd killed that damn thing when you had the chance, none of this would have happened."

Elena storms up to Sam. "Really guys? You're doing this right now?"

"It was possessing you, Dad, I would have killed you too." Sam says.

"Yeah, and your brother would be awake right now." John says.

"Shut up, both of you!" Dean yells.

      "Go to hell." Sam says.

"I should have never taken you along in the first place. I knew it was a mistake, I knew I was wrong—"

"I said SHUT UP!" Dean smacks a glass of water off the table and it goes flying, crashing to the floor. Sam and John look at each other, confused. Dean looks stunned. "Dude, I full-on Swayze'd that mother." Dean says.

Dean crumples in pain, flickering. Nurses and Doctors start running by in the hallway. "What is it?" Elena asks.

"Something's going on out there." John says. He jerks his head indicating "Go find out" to Sam.

In Dean's Room, Monitors are beeping, a Doctor and some nurses are surrounding Dean, resuscitating him. "All clear." A Doctor says.

Sam huddles in the doorway, tears in his eyes. "No." He says and Elena comes up behind him.

"Still no pulse." The Nurse says.

"Okay, let's go again, 360." The Doctor says. "Charging." Sam leans on the doorway, crying and fidgeting.

Dean comes slowly behind him. He sees a ghostly figure floating over the body lying in the bed. "You get the hell away from me." He runs to the bed and faces the thing down, yelling. "I said get back!"

Sam blinks, looks confused, as if he's heard something. Dean grabs for the spirit; he latches on momentarily before it hurls him back and then soars out of the room. The monitors slow, quiet. "We have a pulse. We're back into sinus rhythm." The Nurse says.

Dean runs into the hallway, looking for the spirit; it's vanished. Sam sighs in relief and backs into the hallway, watching from there. Dean comes back, stands by him. "Don't worry, Sammy. I'm not going anywhere. I'm getting that thing before it gets me. It's some kind of spirit, but I could grab it. And if I can grab it, I can kill it." He says.

Sam looks over to where Dean was, confused. Dean wanders the halls, then hears a girl yelling. "Can't you see me? Why won't you look at me?" She yells.

      "Now what?" Dean asks.

"Somebody talk to me! Say something, please!" She yells.

"Can you see me?" Dean asks.

      "Yeah."

"All right, just, uh, calm down. What's your name?" Dean asks.

      "Tessa."

      "Okay, good, Tessa, I'm Dean."

"What's happening to me? Am - am I dead?" She asks.

      "That sort of depends."
