{Chapter Nineteen}
Carmina set the glass of water in front of both me and Jaycee and Jaycee quickly went to licking and slurping the drink. Carmina right hand came up to her chest, “Oh my, all that barking and yapping you must have been doing made you thirsty, huh?”
I narrowed my eyes on Jaycee and she paused, turning her eyes to me before they widen. She took her paws off the table, sitting back onto the chair, sitting properly on the seat.
Continue, please, she said.
Carmina sat at the table, “You would not be classed under a witch, Jaycee. Your body, your soul, it's filled with magic. You think you shift simply because you force it? No, it's magic shifting you into a wolf.”
“I don't understand though.”, I said. “I mean, I do a little but if Jaycee's family can do magic, why haven't they known all these decades?”
“Would you let the wolves know they could do magic and have them possibly use them against us?”, she asked in a very 'duh' way. “I'm risking everything by telling you both now, but since you both are mated, I thought it would be appropriate to tell you.”
“Oh.”, I said.
“It's not easy for them to use it also.”, she said. “Where to us, it comes naturally, but to Jaycee, it would take a lot of her just to do a spell even if she is a seventh. To much could even possibly kill her.”
Jaycee made a whining sound in her throat, Kill me? Oh God, this just keeps getting better.
Carmina eyes narrowed on Jaycee and she snapped her fingers, “Being in your head is weird, my dear. You're a weird girl all together. Pastel leggings weren't in the eighties to me and they aren't now. And please, wash your hair more.”
Jaycee scuffed, but then was taken back when it came out her mouth, “I'm talking!”, she said, chuckling.
“God, this is weird.”, I said.
“But yes, Jaycee, to much using magic at one time can put a lot of stress on you, both human and wolf. It could either make you stop shifting into a wolf, cause damage to your human body, and or kill you.”, she said.
“How do you know all this?”, I asked.
“Yeah, how do I know your telling the truth?”, Jaycee asked, standing up against the table by putting her paws against it. “How do I know your not just trying to freak me out? I think if my family had powers, my dad, uncles, aunt, or grandfather would have realized it by now.”
“Jaycee.”, I hissed at her to stop being to rude. If Carmina really wanted to, she could turn Jaycee into a rat. Or do something worse.
“Like I had said earlier, your mating with a witch or warlock is rare but when it does your kind will start to learn magic like your doing now but when they use it to much, all the possibilities can happen. I only seen it once, I was thirteen.”, she said. “You only been using it for a week now, you haven't done much damage. Look here, Jaycee, I could care less about you and neither help you.”
“I need to be turn back though!”, Jaycee said. “Okay, okay, I understand. Don't use magic to much or hard, but please, help me. I can't go home like this, my parents will be totally angry at me.”
“Your only worried about what your parents will do?”, she asked, leaning a little close to us.
“Will yeah, of course—no, out of my head! I can feel you in there!”, Jaycee said, scrambling back against the chair.
Carmina chuckled and straighten her back, “You don't want Hermes to have to take care of you the rest of your life like this. How cute.”
Jaycee growled at her, but stayed quiet.
“I'm only going to help because I'm interested.”, she said. “Like I said, I only seen this pairing once in my life and my mother had helped with the cause. I remember their names, Eliana Colton, she was the witch, and James Ralfe.”
“Ralfe?”, Jaycee questioned. “I know that last name, I met a distant relative at one of the my family parties, she was at least twenty-four. She must be their granddaughter. Why would she keep one of her grandparents being a witch a secret?”
Carmina shrugged, “Could be lots of reason, to either keep her grandmother safe. We both don't have equal feelings for each other, our kinds do have a hate for each other. Maybe they didn't want to change anything about your family.”
“I would have to tell my family this.”, Jaycee said. “I can't keep something this big of a new from this, they deserve to know. We all do.”
“You really think your family would accept all this?”, Carmina asked, sitting back in the chair, laying her arms on the chair arms, and crossed her legs. “Let me ask without looking in your head. Have you told your parents what Hermes is? Hermes parents know what you are, his mother knew the second she saw your father those years ago and that's the reason why they left.”
Oh no, I thought, bring my head up to my forehead and scratched my temple. My parents told my when I was ten we were leaving cause of my father job but my parents finding out about Jaycee's father could also be a real good one.
“I-I've planned to tell them soon. Things are different these days, my family can be more understanding.”, she said.
“I would suggest keeping this knowledge to yourself.”, she said. “You can start a war between witches and werewolves. I don't need my kind worrying about your kind over powering us.”
“You just said we can't use our powers like you both do.”, Jaycee said and scuffed. “Look, I want to turn back and being like this isn't making things feel serious.”
Carmina shrugged, “Do it yourself.”
“I don't know how!”, Jaycee said. “You said you would help me.”
“I want something out of this.”, she said.
“Well, what do you want?”, Jaycee asked.
“Same thing my mother wanted.”, she said, narrowing her eyes on her. “I want to—in a way—study you.”
“Study me?”, Jaycee asked, confused.
“What does that mean?”, I finally spoke up again, confused with Jaycee. That made no sense and it was just very confusing.
“You interest me, Jaycee.”, she said, grinning. “I want to help you with your magic, I want to see how far you can use it, what you can do, and just learn all your little secret about being a werewolf. I want to see you two times a month. My mom never let me see what she was doing with James and I've been waiting for you as you can say. You being a female just makes it better.”
Carmina got up from her chair, “I'll be right back.”
Once Carmina left the room and closed the slid door behind her, Jaycee head turned to me, “She's weird.”
I brought my index finger up to my mouth, “Hush, she could still hear you.”
“Sorry, but I'm still trying to cope with what she's telling me Hermes! This is so much in one hour, I mean I'm considered stronger then you but I could kill myself doing it.”, she said. “I thought my family was dysfunctional before, this just makes us even more unnormal.”
“It kind of makes sense though.”, I said. “I mean, it was magic that made your family like this, of course the magic is flowing in your soul. Maybe that's why you guys mate like we do, but we just get to choose who we be with be. We had the same spirits all this time we shared.”
“And we don't get to choose?”, she asked. “And why did they set us up if you get to choose?”
One of the slid door open, “A really good question, Jaycee.”, Carmina said, walking into a pink robe in her hand. “Even I don't have the answer, but my mom theory is because even though we share the same spirits, they prefer us more over then you. Your kind was made over revenge. Your like—baggage or waste of space.”
Jeycee was not happy to hear that because she growled, “Excuse me?”
Carmina chuckled, “Oh calm down, it's true though. We witches and warlocks have freer will where your kind is kept on a leash. We guess it's just so your kind wouldn't pick anyone, our spirits made sure they were setting you up with your match. Hermes is your match, your other half. You both are completely different, but so much alike. There's a reason why you two are together, but I can't tell you that because I don't know what the spirits think. I can't tell you why.”
“So how do I get back to normal?”, Jaycee asked, changing the subject.
“You need to recite the reversal spell in Latin, it was our first language back in the day.”, she said, saying the spell she needed. “You must think about in your head, concentrate really hard. Think about your appearance before your were turned. Think about how much stronger you are then Lucinda. Anything that can help.”
She picked Jaycee up and set her on the floor. I got up from the chair and stood next to Carmina, “You sure this is going to work?”, I asked her.
“It has to!”, Jaycee said quickly.
“It'll work,” Carmina said. “It just might take awhile because even if she is strong, it'll be like lighting an almost emptied lighter, she'll have to flick it a few times before it works.”
I crossed my arms and brought one of my left hand up to my mouth as Jaycee closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It was a moment before she opened her right eyes, “Uh, can you tell me what that spell was again?”
*
After half an hour of Jaycee trying, Carmina was getting impatient so she told Jaycee and I to both leave and keep trying until it works. She made sure to tell Jaycee she would be stopping by in two weeks to see how she's doing and do a few magic 'testing' stuff on her.
After trying again in the car, Jaycee opened her eyes and groaned, “Why isn't it working!”, she said, clearly annoyed with herself. “I'm getting pissed off.”
I just shrugged and took one of my hands off the wheel, laying it against the door, “I don't know.”
“What's up with you?”, she asked. “I'm the one like this, why are you so frustrated?”
“I'm not.”, I said, but I was. I didn't want to tell her that though and have to 'explain myself'
“Tell me then.”, she said and I quickly looked at her.
“I'm not talking to you while your like this.”, I said and I could feel her glare on me. “Look Jaycee, my whole life changed to today. What I thought was normal was completely different then I thought in the world. I mean—your stronger then me! How is that right?'
“Why does it matter?”, she asked. “At least you can use your powers, I could die if I over use. Carmina even said turning me back could take a big toll on my soul.”
“I know, I know.”, I said, sighing. “Look, don't worry about me. Just keep trying.”
She huffed out her nose heavily and she closed her eyes. I drove onto the highway now and I was starting to feel hungry again. Maybe I'll stop somewhere to get us something to eat. I was getting a headache and maybe food will help with all my knew found information.
I suddenly heard a loud piercing gasp and I jumped, my hands flying to the wheel since I almost lost control of it, and I turned to look at Jaycee who was.
“Oh, my God!”, I couldn't help but yelled as I looked away from a naked Jaycee and I looked to see how far the closest person behind me was and pulled off to the side as Jaycee jumped into the back.
I turned the car off and brought my hands up to my eyes, “I, uh—didn't see anything.”, I said as Jaycee rustled around in the back, probably trying to get on the robe Carmina had given her.
“O-okay, I'm dressed.”, she said and I took my hands off my face. I slowly turned around to see Jaycee sitting in the middle seat, her face red as a tomato. She awkwardly smiled at me, “I did it.”, she said, bring her hand up to the back of her head and looked away.
