Chapter 1 - The Beginning of a Long Trip
Author's Note:
Hey there everyone, there is one thing I wanted to do to keep track of things and events that happen in this story. I am going to be putting Arcs into this story as it would revolve around certain events and actions. So remember that the first Arc will be known as the Discovery Arc, which would be the beginning of the Summer Vacation and Kieran learning more about the Omnitrix and alien existence. Though you will know which Arc is which as I will put the number of Chapters each Arc has and such in the description of this story. So with that out of the way, onto the story!
------------------------------------------------------
I-Island, an artificial island that was created to house some of the best scientists around the world. This island is able to move around to many places across the ocean to protect the scientists that spend their lives here. Though its defences could be considered about the same as a prison in Japan known as Tartarus, one of the highest maximum security prisons in the world to house dangerous Villains that cause more harm than good.
Surrounded by a dome wall standing high, this island has lighter restrictions in comparison to certain parts of the world. Here, people are allowed to use their abilities known as Quirks, as long as they are not causing any trouble or harm towards the residents and tourists that come by to this magnificent island created by humankind. This island came to be thanks to the investment from every company in the world that is involved with the Pro Hero business, creating what many would call a technological paradise.
Thousands of scientists and their families inhabit this island's main cities as the scientists primarily research the Quirk phenomenon and develop tools or Support Items to support Pro Heroes across the globe. This supposed funding project, was created to bring together the top scientists of the world to study upon Quirks within this safe environment. Though this island is also popular for its I-Expo, a city-wide event that showcases all the island's technological advancements as Pro Heroes are invited by the event sponsors and people permitted to use their Quirks in public.
This island's city also houses three separate districts. Residential, Business and School Districts. Though the only way to access this city is by plane through entering by the airport of this island.
Though within the School Districts, sits the aforementioned I-Island Academy, where students study and train to become scientists of their crafts. Many students who live on this island want to be a scientist that is willing to help out the Pro Heroes around the globe. Many even strive to be like the top scientists as well. Though as for this particular teen, you could say he wants to be his own person.
Currently in a lab, we can see a teenage boy working on some gear as he was hyper focused on what he considered to be important in the moment. Having red hair that was somewhat wild and dim red eyes, he had a focused expression, having a small smile with narrowed eyes as he was tinkering around. He knew that he didn't need to attend classes today because of him finishing the work ahead of time due to boredom. This young man is none other than our protagonist, Kieran Castiel.
At the moment, he was tinkering with a new Support Item that he was working on for a Pro Hero that was situated apparently in Europe. As far as he knew, the Quirk of the individual Hero was rather simplistic, allowing one to manipulate the air around themselves. Yet as far as the descriptions went on what they really wanted, apparently they wanted some form of metallic wings that allows themselves to remain afloat while utilizing their Quirk.
To some, it may seem impossible, but to him, his imagination always ran wild. Sure, he could imagine others being Heroes and saving others with some cool pieces of tech he could make in the future. However, there was always one sad thought that plagued his very mind, the idea that he could never be a Hero. Being deemed as Quirkless, in a world filled with Superhumans, isn't ideally the best thing one could hope for. Yet as he continued on with his life, he embraced his Quirkless nature, figuring out that there is more ways to enjoy life than being of the current norms.
The advantages were rather clear to him, remain in the background, become an inventor, and even being himself. As he just finished tinkering, he backed away as he breathed a sigh of relief as he wiped a bit of sweat away from his forehead.
Kieran: "Man... This thing really did deserve my full attention."
He had a better look, taking in his pride and joy as he had a small confident smirk on his face. At first when the contract came in for the design, he couldn't understand why he would need to make wings that are quite complexed, it did however boost his confidence. He took in the dark black metallic colour as it reflected the light that shun down at it from the ceiling lights. He slowly moved his fingertips from his right hand across the surface, feeling the smooth material as he eventually pressed the button in the centre, allowing the wings to fold into a form of backpack.
He nodded to himself, feeling a form of triumph in his very being. Though he suddenly heard the lab door open as he heard what he could describe to be eager footsteps as he turned to look at who entered.
???: "Hey Kieran!"
His eyes widened for a moment as he wasn't expecting to see this person today since he was aware of her having classes. Her hair being a long blonde colour as her glasses let off a nice glimmer of her light blue eyes. He knew her as Melissa Shield, technically in the same class as him, as well as her being his childhood friend.
Kieran: "Melissa? Oh hey, I thought you had classes today?"
She had a bit of a happy tone in her voice as she was fairly energetic today, being rather happy to see her best friend at the moment.
Melissa: "I finished early with the classes. I wanted to check up on you with your current contract. So how's it going?"
Kieran then did a bit of a chuckle as he rubbed the back of his neck a bit.
Kieran: "I would say I did really well. Though the only way to know if it actually works is giving the Pro Hero the chance to try it out first..."
He suddenly sounded doubtful if it will actually work, though he was sure as hell that his work was definitely a good looker for the Pro Hero if it did work.
Melissa: "Hey come on now~ I'm sure it'll work. Besides, you're always one step behind me, so I'm sure you'll ace it!"
Kieran at this point couldn't tell if she was trying to cheer him up, or insult him to a degree. However, he sighed, laughing a little at her bubbly personality.
Kieran: "I suppose you're right. So, would you like to walk with me while I deliver this? I need to deliver this to your father to see if the design will prove sufficient."
Melissa: "Of course! I'm sure Papa will approve of the design!"
Kieran then shrugs as he grabs the backpack, slinging it around his arm.
Kieran: "Proof is in the taste of the pudding. That's what my Grandpa always tells me. Come on, it's a nice sunny day outside."
Melissa: "Coming~!"
Kieran and Melissa then made their way out of the lab as they used the elevator to head to the ground floor, exiting the building as they walked through the slightly busy streets. Some of the people greeted them as Melissa and Kieran greeted them back from time to time. Though while they were walking, Melissa wanted to talk to Kieran since she was curious about something.
Melissa: "Hey Kieran, the Summer Vacation is coming up, got any plans?"
Kieran: "Honestly, no clue. As much as I would like to do something, if I can't find anything to do, I guess I'll have to go through the Summer School courses."
Melissa: "Really? Don't you want to see your Grandpa again?"
Kieran then shrugged.
Kieran: "Eh. Sure, he took care of me when I was a kid, but I'm a bit tired of listening to his plumber things. Why would anybody listen to their grandparent simply talking about crap like plumbing people's sewage pipes?"
Melissa: "He's actually nice to hang around with though..."
Kieran then pulled a deadpan look, feeling rather weary.
Kieran: "Oh no... Did he rub off on you...?"
Melissa: "What do you mean?"
Kieran then looked away, simply feeling a little stubborn about it.
Kieran: "Nothing."
Melissa: "Come on Kieran, at least visit your Grandpa once in a while."
Kieran: "Yeah, I suppose you're right on that... Though it's a bit embarrassing hanging around him at times..."
Melissa: "But he is your grandfather. You should at least see him when you get the chance, maybe have a talk with him or something..."
Kieran: "I'll try... Just for you though Melissa."
Melissa: "Well, I got something else to ask as well. Why did you actually join the Academy? I never bothered to ask, but I was wondering..."
Kieran: "Well... You could say I was inspired by your father?"
Melissa: "Really?"
Kieran: "Yeah. Being one of the best scientists in the world. Once someone who helped All Might throughout his years. I admire the guy... though I can't tell if he likes me or not..."
Melissa: "I'm sure Papa likes you. Just give him a bit of time. You did have a bit of a rebellious phase you know?"
He then let out a sigh as he laughed a little, agreeing to what she was saying.
Kieran: "Indeed I did. Though he sure knows how to get me straight... It feels like he could end up like my actual father one of these days. Treating me like a son..."
Melissa: "I mean, he has been paying attention to you as of late."
Kieran: "Has he now?"
Melissa: "Yeah, though he wouldn't tell me the exact reasons why. Though since you got nothing planned for the Summer Vacation... I wish you could come along..."
He then blinked a few times in confusion.
Kieran: "Huh? What do you mean?"
Melissa: "Didn't Papa tell you before? He was planning a Summer Vacation to spend time with me and go across the entirety of the United States for the three months."
Kieran: "Really? Well I think it's a decent amount of time to spend with your father honestly. He is usually a busy man. However, I've heard that he's been a bit down in the dumps lately..."
Melissa: "Well... I think one of his big projects got scrapped. He is very prideful in his work, but he is a good man."
Kieran: "Man... If there was someway to cheer him up somehow..."
They eventually reached the main building as they took the elevator, though they had to wait for a few moments. When the elevator doors opened, they made their way to where Melissa's father usually works as they enter his office space. It clearly wasn't too occupied at the moment as they both noticed a man busy by a desk.
Melissa: "Hey Papa!"
???: "Hmm?"
The man turned around to show his full appearance. Kieran knew him right away as he always admired this man from the bottom of his heart. Having light brown hair and aqua coloured eyes, his glasses rested perfectly as he had a small smile on his face when he saw Melissa. This person is none other than the famous scientist David Shield.
David: "Hey Melissa. I thought you had classes today."
Melissa: "I finished early with the classes today. Although, Kieran here wants to make sure on something."
David: "Really now?"
David then looked at Kieran as understandably he was somewhat nervous being in this kind of situation.
Kieran: "Yes Mr. Shield... I was working on a Support Item for a Pro Hero and I needed your advice on it."
David: "Well then, may I have a look at it?"
Kieran then nods as he hands over the backpack, taking a close look at it. David was initially confused, though Kieran decided to speak up.
Kieran: "There's a button on the back."
David then looks for the aforementioned button, which he immediately presses as the metallic wings sprout out from the backpack itself. He took a good look, analysing every small detail he could. Once he was done, he simply pressed the button again to close it, making him smile lightly as he looked at Kieran, putting the backpack down.
David: "Your design is rather well done. The balance is good and the material you used seemed solid, but why a backpack though?"
Kieran: "Oh umm... You could say that you do get some Heroes who blend in with the crowd... So I thought..."
David: "That the Hero would want to blend in and get to places without being recognized? Your imagination and ingenuity never ceases to amaze me Kieran. Though there's one small problem. While your heart is in the right place, there's one important key detail you're missing. They specified how they wanted you to do it. They didn't want it in the form of a backpack, they wanted it in the form of something smaller."
Kieran: "What? I don't even think that's even possible Mr. Shield..."
He then walked up to Kieran, placing a hand on his shoulder.
David: "Remember, when you put your mind to it, anything's possible. Though I think you can put the project on hold and give it to somebody else."
Kieran: "Wait... what?"
Kieran felt like his entire world was spinning, like as if he was completely denied an opportunity to prove himself even further. Though David quickly cleared the misunderstanding.
David: "I simply wanted to ask you something. I know you're always ahead of your class, and you are always enthusiastic when it came to being an inventor for Support Items. However, I have something planned and it involves your grandfather."
Kieran: "Wait... What does Grandpa have anything to do with this?"
David then laughed softly as he patted Kieran's shoulder for reassurance as he was beginning to neaten his desk.
David: "It's simple, it's thanks to him that we get to enjoy a road trip across the United States. Since your grandfather allowed us to do this since Melissa is your friend, I figured you should come along for the ride."
Kieran: "Umm..."
Kieran was uncertain about rather he would want to go on the road trip with them, though Melissa then chimed in.
Melissa: "Isn't that exciting Kieran? We get to hang out properly like when we were kids!"
She wrapped her arm around his neck with excitement as he could feel his face press against her, making his face flush a bit as he was trying to remain calm. Though he had a flustered but stubborn expression as his eyes looked away.
Kieran: "Yeah... just like when we were kids..."
She then let go as he managed to correct his posture, allowing David Shield to continue.
David: "You got much to pack for the vacation? As you know, this vacation starts tomorrow and we're leaving early in the morning."
Kieran: "I really don't have much besides some notebooks and such..."
David: "Then it's settled. Be ready by tomorrow morning. You are hereby dismissed Kieran."
Kieran: "Yes sir!"
Kieran then did a mock solute as he immediately left the room, leaving both Melissa and her father alone together. Though if there is one thing that David immediately thought of, is the fact that this vacation might become a tedious task in itself....
