Chapter 36

A/N: Hey guys, I'd really like to know one thing. Is my story's paste too slow or is it okay? Do I need to move it a bit faster??? I'd really appreciate some feedback! :)

————————

The bell rang and everybody got up to go to their second class. As I was fixing my things, Adam waved at me before he left and I waved back. It was the little things he did that meant the most to me.

I slowly stood up from of my seat and placed my notebook and folders inside my rolly backpack then made my way to the teachers desk. She looked up from her laptop and smiled warmly at me just as I stopped in front of her. “Hey, Dawn, what's up?” She placed her complete attention on me.

“Hi, uh...” I cleared my throat. “Do you know where Megumi might be by any chance?”

She almost seemed puzzled as to why I didn't know. “She didn't tell you?” I lifted an eyebrow in curiosity while she typed on her computer. “I thought you two were close friends.”

I breathed then said, “It's... complicated.”

“That's what they all say.” Mrs. Charlotte turned her laptop toward me and pointed to a place on the screen. “She's suspended for the whole week... for fight...”

“For fighting?!” I cut her off unintentionally. The words just... came out. “What the heck—with who? Does it say?”

“Yeah, it says she fought with, uh... a girl called Alex Garcia—she's also suspended,” her eyes widened slightly. “Uh-oh, it's the same Alexa that sits right over there in this period. Yikes.”

“Yeah... yikes. But I don't understand why—why would she fight her?” I asked. “I thought they were friends. It doesn't make any sense.”

“I don't know either. I wish I did, though,” she sighed softly. “I guess it's something you're gonna have to go ahead and ask her yourself—ask her, she'll tell you. Trust me she's not the type to be quiet.”

I stared at her for another second then smiled. “O...Okay, Mrs. Charlotte. Thank you for your help.” She answered me with a simple ‘no problem’ then I quickly left and marched straight to the bathroom because I seriously had to go. Relieving myself was the only thing that was on my mind at this moment.

The line was super long and almost poked out of the entrance. I bet more than half of these girls aren't even here to use the bathroom but to get a turn to look, in the one mirror that was in here, to fix themselves up for next period. It was like we were in a chicken coop! I should really start getting in the habit of asking to go during class.

Also, waiting to go in a stall was quite annoying because I was only comfortable with using the large one, so even though I was at the front of the line and a small one was open I had to let the person behind me go. I almost peed on myself once because some idiot thought it was nap time in there. Like, I can't even...

After I was finished, I probably had like a minute left before the late bell rang, so I walked as fast as I could to get to class on time. I didn't run because I didn't want to risk running over someone's new shoes again. Yeah... that's not happening. I looked down at my phone to get the real time and saw that I actually had two minutes left.

Like that's a difference...

I was still glancing at my phone after I knew the time, checking if I had any new messages from Wattpad. But as I was rushing I accidentally bumped into someone. I bounced back from the impact by about three feet. My side hit the sharp corner of the boy's books, making me groan slightly while I held my side with a pained facial expression. I looked up at the angry person and it made my blood run cold.

Oh no.

His books and my phone flew to the floor as soon as we collided with each other. I was such an idiot, not paying attention to where I was going. I had no choice, though. I used the bathroom and was in danger of being late to my biology class. I hate being late, but probably the universe loves it when I am.

“Oh, come on!” Jordon yelled, clenching his fists tightly. It seemed as if he was resisting the urge to hit me. “Do you need glasses or something?! Watch where you're going next time...” It was then when he faced me directly, to probably fully vent out his wrath, that he saw I had an oxygen tank and realized it was me; the girl who ran over his brand new Yeezys.

“Oh—oh my gosh, I'm so sorry,” I said franticly, not wanting him to scream at me anymore. I loathed being yelled at. “I... I didn't mean to. I was in a rush...”

“It's fine,” he said cutting me off then looked at his friends. “Aye, you guys can go without me. I'll catch up.” Wait, what's going on? They seemed a bit confused at first, as was I, but then they quickly complied and went ahead of him, looking back a few times.

I glanced toward the floor at my phone mixed in with his large textbooks, hoping that he wouldn't get upset that the ‘sick girl's’ phone is touching his books. “Here, um, lemme just...” I said, gesturing to reach for my phone, but he bent down and grabbed it before I did.

“Nah wait, I got it,” he said then handed it to me. I hesitantly grabbed it without looking into his eyes because that would resurface all the hatred I had for him—for what he did the other day. I'm a simple person, I think, and I hate conflict.

“Thanks...” I said then slowly backed up and began to walk away.

“Hey,” he said making me stop. I was reluctant to turn around and face him, but I did anyway. I sighed then gave him a what’ look. He cleared his throat. “I apologize for yelling at you. You didn't deserve that. I should've also watched where I was going, so it wasn't just you that's in the wrong.” My face softened at his words. “I had a bad morning, so I was already hot, ya know?”

“Um,” I didn't know what to say. I was... I never expected someone like him to apologize to someone like me. “...Yeah, uh, it's fine. I totally... understand,” I said literally having to force those words to roll off my tongue. I then stood there for a second more to see if he had anything else to say, but he also stood silent, probably waiting for me to continue speaking.

Pfft, as if.

With nothing else to be said I slowly nodded my head then began to once again walk my own way, but he spoke before I could even turn all the way.  “Wait,” he said, taking steps closer to me and was now about three feet away—too close for comfort. I sighed and just as I did the bell rang; the bell I was trying so hard to outrun, but failed to.

“What?” I asked sourly. I was trying my hardest to stay calm and nice, but I was unable to hold back my bitterness any longer. “Um, I gotta go. The bell just rang and now because of you, I'm gonna be in trouble for being late.” He tried to reply but I quickly cut him off. “Look, you apologized and I accepted it, okay? We're done—we don't have to see or talk to each other again,” I said, crossing my arms. “You're welcome. I'm doing you a favor.”

His lips stretched into a slim smile then breathed a small chuckle. “Sassy are we gettin', huh?” I rolled my eyes with irritation picking at my flesh. “Alright, alright,” he said, sensing my impatience. “It's just that... I don't think I ever really caught your name. You mind telling me?”

“Why don't you guess? I'm pretty sure you heard it plenty of times while you and those other jerks were bullying me in the cafeteria, remember?”

“Ah man... yeah.” He looked ashamed of himself as he lowered his gaze and rubbed the back of his neck. He averted his milk chocolate eyes back to me and said, “Look, I'm so sorry about that—that I did that to you. I don't know why but...”

“Do you actually expect me to forgive you... after all you've put me through?” I strained my eyes at him.

Placing his hands in his jeans' pockets, he said, “Well, kinda.” He seemed a bit unsure.

“Well, you're kinda wrong. I'd never do that,” I said backing up and then turned my feet. “Oh, and thanks for making me late. I really appreciate it!”

“Hang on, hang on,” he said, trying to make me stop again but I didn't this time, so he decided to jog up right in front of me. He was blocking my way, preventing me from getting any further. Gosh, he's so relentless.

“What is it?! What do you want, Jordon,” I said through gritted teeth after I gave up trying to get pass him. His tall and broad frame towered over me. I was like a Chihuahua standing up straight in front of a human.

“I just want you to know that I really am sorry. There's seriously no bull in anything I'm saying.” It almost seemed as if he was desperate for me to accept his apology. But why does he want me to so bad? He's probably faking. I gazed at him, this time without much anger or hatred because I knew it would haze my thoughts toward him and I hate to say it, but he did look genuine. “I'm tryin' here.”

I sighed then cleared my throat. “Alright fine,” I turned my face to the side and rolled my eyes while crossing my arms. “I—I forgive you.”

His lips—which were in a straight line immediately curled up into a smile once I said those three agonizing words. His eyes lightened—he was overjoyed with happiness that he couldn't contain himself and crashed into me, giving me a hug. I think he even lifted me like a foot in the air because for a second I could no longer feel the floor underneath my feet.

I didn't return the hug, though, I just kept my arms flared out because I was in too much shock to react in time. “Thank you,” he said, finally pulling away. As he did, his hands gently skimmed down my arms to my hands and held them tenderly. I felt the goosebumps forming; his dark, cocoa brown skin was beyond doubt really smooth and soft. Like how a newly bloomed rose pedal felt.

He let go and side smiled at me, making the pesky baby wolves inside my stomach run around with excitement. My heart was pumping like I was running for dear life and blood made it's stubborn way to my tender cheeks. Wait a minute, no! I don't want to like him—I don't want to be be nervous around him or anything, but he's making me feel some type of way and I didn't like it.

I was too stunned to talk so I nodded my head. “You know, I still haven't caught what you name is,” he said, “are you gonna actually tell me what it is now?”

I lifted my eyebrow at him and cleared my throat. “First of all, I hate being touched,” I lied, “so don't touch me. And... my name is Daw...”

“Hey, what are you two still doing in the hallway?” A lady security guard asked, interrupting me. “Y'all are lucky I came around here. If it was someone else both a your butts would've gotten busted. Now, go on to class before I have to write you guys up. You love birds can make out later.” My eyes widened at her comment.

“What? Oh no, it's not like...”

“Okay, Ms. Prescott, we understand.” He raised his voice louder than mine and it caused me to be cut off. “Thanks.” Why didn't he let me finish talking?

“Mhm, you two bettah not still be here by the time I come back or else there's gonna be some consequences.” He lifted his hand high up in the air, waving at her as she turned her foot and left. He turned back to me once we were alone again.

I cleared my throat again, not so much to clean it out, but to distract myself from the way he was looking at me. His eyes were so soft—so tender as he gazed at me. It was like he was a whole new person. “My—my name's Dawn,” I said, “happy now?”

“Dawn,” he repeated as if he was trying it out while he rubbed his chin. “That's very beautiful. I like it.”

What the heck is up with him? I know someone can't change that drastically in a matter of a few days. It's not possible because I've tried so many times before, but nothing was different about me—I just stayed the same old me no matter what I did. Something doesn't feel right and I'm about to figure out what it is.

“Okay, that's it,” I said firmly, “cut the act. I know that something's up, so don't try to play me.” His eyes slightly widened in surprise by my outburst, but quickly went back to their natural size. “Why are you being nice to me. You hated me so much three days ago that you dumped frickin' food on my head. Why the change all of the sudden?”

“You really want me to tell you?”

“Well, duh, that's why I asked,” I said in an obvious voice.

Jordon chuckled at what I said then looked at me with a smile. “I'm a,” he stretched out the a for a second, “christian now. I'm tryna change now that I found my new faith in Christ.”

New found faith in Christ? What the?!

I was so caught off guard that I almost choked on my own saliva. “Really, you're a Christian? Since when?” My voice cracked.

“Since a few days ago,” he said simply. I stared at him for a brief moment in disbelief then I chuckled. “C'mon, don't laugh. You know as much as I do that Jesus can change even the worst of people.”

“I don't know much about that, buddy, but I do know the devil is a lie.”

He laughed and I did the same.“You're a Christian too, right?” He said and I wrote confusion onto my face. “I saw a sticker on the back of your... red car with the John 3:16 verse on it.”

Okay... just because my mom's a Christian doesn't mean I am,” I snapped then immediately regretted my tone. He was being nice and I didn't want to be the bad guy. “Sorry, it's just...”

“Nah, it's all good,” he said cutting me off then shrugged. “I just... thought, you know.” I slowly nodded my head not knowing what else to say but thankfully, he spoke again before the silence became awkward. “Aye, I have to go now. See you later?”

“Uh, yeah. See... see you later,” I stuttered. He let out a soft chuckle and winked at me before he turned his foot and left.

“Bye Dawn.”

I can't believe what just happened. Was I dreaming? Have I dreamt all this up that like I did with the guardian angel? I hope so.
