My True Purpose
Ever since I was young, I was told that I was special. That I was unique. That I was loved and wanted by millions of people. But...I always wondered, what is my true purpose?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even up until today, I still remember the feeling I had when I was first born. When I first came into this world, the first living being I saw was my mother. She stared at me, looking to make sure I was alright. She had two leaves for ears, and one in a weird shape on her forehead. She licked my head as I leaned into her touch. I scooted closer to her, feeling the warmth of her body.
As I was about to drift back into my slumber, I felt another touch on my right paw. I opened my eyes once again and saw another living being. I have come to known that this was my elder sister. She stared at me like I was some sort of alien. She closed her eyes, and I thought that she was sleeping. I got up from my mothers warmth and nudged her with my head. She opened her eyes, which now glowed a light blue colour.
Suddenly, I was lifted off the ground as I squirmed around, frightened. My mother called out angrily, as I was brought back to the ground. I immediately ran to my mother, glad to feel her warmth again. She licked my head, as I grew tired slowly.
Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Look Daddy! This Eevee looks weird!"
I was awoken by the sound of a little girl screaming loudly. 'Eevee?' I wondered. 'What's an Eevee?' She looked excited. I, however, could not understand her excitement. She ran to a man, who was picking some Oran Berries from a nearby bush. He dropped the Oran Berries into a basket and followed her, curiosity and disbelief quite evident on his face.
As soon as he saw me, his expression changed from disbelief to shock. He squatted down to have a closer look at me. He was about to pet my head, when suddenly my mother growled lowly at him. He immediately retracted his hand, frowning slightly at the sight of my mother. He went closer to me, taking a Sitrus Berry from his pocket and showing it to me. The smell of the berry was hard to resist, and slowly I felt myself losing control as temptation got the better of me. Step by step I got closer to the man, sniffing at the berry as he smiled.
My mother however, did not approve of this as she grabbed me by my neck and brought me closer into the hole of tree. My home. She opened her mouth, and a green sphere appeared in front of her mouth. The man cursed under his breath, as he took out a red and white ball from his other pocket. He threw it to the ground, and from inside of the weird ball appeared a small living being--a pokemon. It barked as flames came out from its mouth.
"Growlithe, use Ember!"
The pokemon, whose name was Growlithe, shot a small ball of fire from its mouth towards my mother. My mother was quick to react, and she moved out of the way. She suddenly ran with super speed, knocking the Growlithe a few feet back. The leaf on her forehead then expanded, as she charged towards the Growlithe.
"Use Fire Fang!"
The Growlithe also charged towards my mother, its fangs burned with fire. It bit my mother on her left leg, as my mother screamed in pain. My sister, who had been out hunting for food, heard the cry and came to my mothers' rescue. She levitated the Growlithe, tossing it into a nearby tree. The Growlithe slid down the tree, its eyes had been replaced with swirls.
The man grumbled, taking out the ball and pointing it the direction of the Growlithe. A red beam came out from the center of it, as Growlithe suddenly disappeared. The man took the hand of the little girl, dragging her away. She was reluctant to leave, but after taking one final glance at me and her father, she obliged.
My sister stridden cautiously over to the basket of berries. She sniffed at it for a while, before lifting it up and bringing it towards us. She offered one to mother, who ate it happily. My sister then looked at me, then turned to my mother. My mother, knowing exactly what she was thinking, nodded to her as they both turned to me. I did not understand what they meant. Why were they staring at me?
And that, was the beginning of my training.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few years past since that incident, six years to be exact. After what had happened that day, both my mother and sister agreed that I should be trained. Over these six years, I have learnt many things. For example, those living beings with two legs were called 'humans'. And some who had the red and white ball, which they call a 'pokeball', were called 'pokemon trainers'. They capture us pokemon into those pokeballs and force us to do their bidding.
My mother told me I had to be wary of these kind of people as I was hunted. Millions of people wanted, even if they weren't pokemon trainers. I was a special type of pokemon called a 'shiny', my mother had said. It meant that my fur was a different colour than all those other Eevees. Instead of the normal brown colouring, my fur was a white colour. I did not really understand why my fur mattered so much to those humans, by my mother said that my white fur was rare and fascinating. She said that if I ever got caught, I would be put up for display for the whole world to gawk at. I would be sold to other humans for a high bargain, and would merely be used for them to stare at. I did not like the sound of that.
Because of this, all these six years, I have been in hiding, only training with my mother and sister. I did not know where my dad was, but whenever I asked my mother about this, she would always tell me that he was in a better place.
I would be lying if I said we didn't come across a few humans. One with a black suit and a red 'R' on his shirt even threatened to kill my mother just to capture. After that incident, my sister never trained with me again.
The reason that I was even more wanted by other humans, my mother had said, was because Eevees could evolve into 8 different types of pokemon. Two examples, were my mother and sister. My mother was a Leafeon, while my sister was an Espeon. Humans could evolve me into many different ways, so they could choose what they wanted me to become.
One experience I could never forget was meeting someone who could understand me. When I was 5, I met a Shiny Noctowl. It told me that not all trainers were bad, and that one day, just maybe I could find a trainer who would treat me as an equal. Who would love me like they did with every other pokemon. It also told me that it had a trainer, a ten-year-old boy with a Pikachu. I wished I could've met that trainer.
Day by day, I would always wish that my destined trainer would appear. That they would travel around the world with me. Although my mother would say that finding a trainer like that would be utterly impossible, I tried not to dwell a lot on what she said and prayed for the best. My sister also told me that the chances of a trainer as I hoped would appear, were just as rare as I was.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another four years has passed since then, and no sign of that 'destined trainer'. Sure, I did meet a quite an amount of trainers, but they were all 'Shiny Hunters'. They would spend hours and hours searching for a shiny pokemon, and some of them even managed to spot me at one point. We tried our best to fight back, but some of them were just too strong. Two, I even remembered, had legendaries. But of course, none of them made me faint. For some odd reason, they kept asking their pokemon to use this move called 'False Swipe'. After using it a few times, when I got hit by it, I felt like I was going to faint, but I didn't. I wonder why.
Almost all of them, in fact, had this beautiful pendant hanging from either their bag, or one of their pockets. It was a blue colour, and was shaped like a star. It sparkled brilliantly, and the more I looked at it, the more I felt tempted to take a closer look. My mother and sister were somehow unaffected by this, and always pulled me back when I tried to get closer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I stared up and the shining moon. Tonight, it was a full moon. I thought back to last week. As I looked back up at the moon, the only thought that was in my mind was, 'Why?'
After years of hiding and trying to hide, I suggested going to a different place. I told my mother and sister that these days, more and more people showed up at our house, and I figured word got out that there was a shiny here. I said that if we move, we would have less chances of getting caught. My sister nodded, deciding that we should move. My mother was very reluctant to leave, but after looking at our circumstances, and a bit of persuading from me and my sister, she finally agreed.
All was going along well, until we were discovered by a trainer. This trainer, however, was more intimidating than all the others. He smirked as he saw me, throwing a pokeball and revealing a pokemon. "This ones fur'll sell a ton." he said, before commanding his pokemon to attack me. I stood there, not afraid, as all the previous Shiny Hunters never wanted to make me faint nor kill me. But after I took the blow, I did not feel as confident.
My mother stepped in front of me. She turned back to both of us. "Run!" she yelled. We were hesitant. None of us moved. "Run!" she snapped angrily. "Don't worry! I'll be just fine!" But even as she said that, I could see the uncertainty in her eyes. Her legs were shaking. But somehow, this got the both of us moving. We didn't know nor care what direction we ran. We ran and ran and ran until our legs couldn't carry us anymore. Luckily, we spotted a cave and decided to go there and have some rest.
I panted heavily, looking at my sister for reassurance. "Mom's alright. Right?" She did not reply. Instead, she sat there, completely ignoring me. Following her wishes, I decided not to bother her anymore. "I'm sure mom's alright. She'll come back for us." I reassured her. But for me, it felt like I needed more reassuring than her.
Two hours passed, and my sister, got up, mumbling a quick "I've rested enough." I looked at the silhouette of my sister. "Where are you going?" I shouted after her. She turned back and looked me in the eyes. She glared at me, and I saw her eyes full of hatred. "It's all your fault! It's all you fault that mom died!" The words I didn't want to hear badly came right out of her mouth like daggers cutting into me. That's when I faced the harsh truth. 'She's dead, isn't she?'
"If only you weren't born, none of this would have happened! Me and mom could be happy! I hate you!" She turned her back. And just when she was about to leave, the four words which I will never forget came out of her mouth. "I hope you die."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two years have now passed. I'm now trying to find some food in the woods. There was barely any light, so I couldn't really see well. I smelled a faint whiff of something sweet close by, and without thinking, I walked towards the smell. With each step I took, I could smell that I was getting closer and closer, and I was sure that it was just a few metres away from me when-
"Ah!"
I bumped into something. Well not really something, more like someone. I looked up at him. 'He noticed me...He doesn't look that strong. Maybe I should fight back.' I thought as I prepared a Shadow Ball.
"I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" He reached out his hands, but realising that it wasn't a human he had knocked into, he crouched down and reached out his hands. I thought that he was going to grab me or something, so I got even more prepared. But what shocked me was that he didn't grab me, but instead patted the ground, as if he was searching for something. His hands started patting the ground beside me, and soon he was patting me. But for some reason, I felt neither threatened nor attacked. I felt...safe.
I withdrew the Shadow Ball as he continued to pat me. Then, he reached my head. He smiled. That smile was something I hadn't seen in a long time. He ruffled my head a bit, as he sat down in front of me. "Hello. What pokemon are you?" I called out to him. "Hello!" I replied back. He giggled, clearly not understanding what I had said. I was confused. "So you're an Eevee?" I nodded, remembering what my mother had said.
"It's nice to meet you Eevee! My name's Ray! As you can probably already tell, I'm blind."
'Blind?' I tilted my head at the word. 'What?'
"It means I can't see." he replied, almost as if he had heard what I was thinking. I was shocked. I did not know that some humans could not see. Was this why he didn't treat me like everyone else? Because he couldn't see that I was a shiny?
"Would you like to come to my house?" I cried out, accepting the offer. After a bit of him knocking into trees and rocks, and me having to guide him a little, we managed to reach his house. It wasn't anything special, but to a pokemon like me it was amazing. He opened the door for me as I walked inside of his house, gaping at it.
A pokemon came from inside the house and greeted Ray. It looked at me, deciding if I was a threat or not. "It's alright Lucario, it's alright."
He went into the kitchen and came out a few minuted later, bring out food for the both of us. I looked at the food, skeptical. "This is pokemon food." he answered my thoughts once again. "Made specially for pokemon to eat. Try it!" I took a taste of it, and let me tell you it was the best food I've had in weeks. Probably because I haven't eaten in weeks.
I must've been hungrier than I realised, because I finished the food in just a minute. I looked at Ray, remembering what Lucario had told me when he was in the kitchen.
"Ray has always wanted to go on a pokemon journey, but couldn't because of his inability to see. I wish I could help him, but I haven't fully mastered my aura yet. And the only way to master it is by training. But we can't do that since he can't see."
I jumped up on the table of where he was eating. I touched his hand with my paw. For the first time, I felt that I actually wanted to help a human. "What is it, Eevee?" he asked. I did not reply, and suddenly I felt my body starting to change. When the light disappeared, I looked at myself, realising that I had evolved into a Sylveon. 'That's it!' I thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been ten years since the day I met Ray. The day which changed my life. After evolving into a Sylveon, I managed to guide Ray though all kinds of places with my feelers. Until Lucario mastered his aura, of course. Now, with Lucario, Ray could see the world for how it really was. We travelled all around the world, and with his team, with me leading in the front, we became the first Alolan Champion. And what surprised me the most was that, when he could see with Lucario's aura, he did not exclaim nor feel shocked that I was a shiny. I still remember what he had said. He told me, "I don't understand why people get so obsessed when they see a pokemon with a different colour. But I feel grateful that you chose me as your trainer."
And I was grateful that he accepted me, as a normal pokemon.
