Chapter 16. Hunch

Nino's POV

"Wayzz, you're probably listening so let me just talk," I muttered to myself in a low voice as I prowled along the dark alleyways. Chat noir and I decided to take nights patrols, even days are on him and odd days on me.

"What's happening between you and Trixie?" I blurted. "Like you guys are both acting really strange but then you're smiling and she's scowling. Did you mess around with her? A mortal?"

I glanced down at the dark street, finding it perfectly abandoned, and moved on.

"I shouldn't, you know, start interfering but you should really apologize to Trixie. I may not know Kwamis, but I know troubled teenagers with a mountain of pressure on their shoulders," I said, remembering Adrien. "They need a lot of attention."

"I don't know your situation," I continued. "But it's always best following your heart. Tyler told me that once."

As I stepped down a curb, a figure jumped on me from behind, blinding with their hands.

"Guess who?" a voice shouted in my ear.

I paused and guessed, "Alya?"

There was a pause. Okay, I'm guessing I was wrong.

"Volpina?"

"You got that right!" The hands flew off from my eyes and my vision returned. I whipped around to face a very triumphant hero.

"Your voice sounds a lot like Alya," I commented.

"I wonder why," Volpina shrugged. Then her face brightened up. "Oh and my Kwami told me that our repelling forces are bam! Gone." She looked adorable when she was excited.

I blinked. Did I just think that?

"And now," Volpina resumed. "You are going to entertain me." She waved her hands drastically.

I couldn't look at her face without noticing how adorable she was!

This is disastrous! I have to stay loyal to Alya. I can't just fall in love with two different girls at the same time and want both! I'm a horrible, horrible person. I'm an idiot.

"Entertain me!" Volpina cried as she clung to my arm with gleaming eyes.

Oh my gosh. I can't do this.

"I'm sorry," I apologized before I brushed off her hands. I focused my gaze on the buildings behind her as I added, "I have to go now."

Volpina didn't say anything. I slowly started walking away, painfully.

As soon as I was out of the street, I felt my bracelet burning hot against my skin. Immediately, there was a soft green glow and I was back to me, Nino Lahiffe, the normal teenager. Immediately, a wave of relief washed over me. For some reason, these days Wayzz seemed to be suffocating me whenever I was Jade Turtle.

"You go back there and apologize to her," Wayzz ordered, his emerald eyes glinting.

I raised an eye brow. "Then you go out there and say sorry to Trixie."

Wayzz's eyes slightly shifted into something that wasn't recognizable. "That's why I'm telling you to apologize to her," he whispered and smiled. It was a mixture of bitter and sweet: bittersweet. "Because you can."

"You mean you can't?" I shook my head. "I learned stuff from Volpina; how big can your ego be—"

"It's not about me," Wayzz said, grabbing my shoulders. "It's not about me. It's about what I should do." Then with that, he shook his head and patted me before disappearing down the darkness.

I stared down after in, a lingering sadness left behind. Wayzz had a darker, deeper past than I could ever imagine, that was for sure.

I shoved my hands into my pockets and walked straight out of dark alley way to be jumped on by a terrifying stalker. Rephrase: it was just a very, very emotionally mood-swingy Volpina.

"Where the heck is that egotistic, arrogant superhero?" she hissed, her eyes blazing with anger.

"Jade Turtle?" I asked. "I don't know, maybe he went somewhere. I surely didn't see him."

"He thinks I'm worthless," Volpina shrank back, her fire suddenly splashed away. Her eyes miserably fell to the ground. "He wouldn't even look at my eyes."

"Maybe he didn't mean that," I quickly jumped in. "Maybe he was really busy and didn't have time."

Volpina apparently is deaf.

"What is wrong with me?" Volpina mumbled to herself as she shivered from the cold. "Am I too needy, clingy, and desperate? Why am I not desirable?"

"You're desirable," I assured her as I placed a hand on her shoulder.

"But why won't Jade Turtle think I'm desirable?" Volpina mumbled. "He's so dense but sometimes he's extremely cute and I can't find a middle ground here!"

I paused, repeating her sentence again and again in my mind.

Oh my gosh.

Holy camembert.

"You like Jade Turtle?" I yelled, louder than intended.

Volpina flinched and grabbed me by the collar, her face turning bright pink. "Will you keep your voice down, Nino! He's probably still around here!" she growled into his eyes.

I shuddered back, my head spinning rapidly.

Volpina read my shock and frowned, "Is it that bad? Is he too good for me?"

"No, no, no, no," I rapped. "It's just that I was surprised. I mean I thought you hated him the way you treat him. You know, pushing him away and stuff."

"Oh," Volpina shrunk back. "Do you think that's why he doesn't suspect it?"

"Well," I scratched behind my neck. "That too but don't you think it's a little . . . I don't know . . . you don't even know who's behind the mask, how can you be so sure about it?"

Volpina snorted, "If you want a lecture on the mask doesn't define you, go catch Chat noir. He's a college professor on that."

I stifled my laughter, I had heard him say that numerous, numerous times.

"But," Volpina said solemnly. "Being a superhero also means that you get to bring out your inner hero." Her smile shone brightly. "Well, for me, wasn't much of a difference but for my Kwami, it definitely did. Whoever Jade Turtle was behind the mask, they're both him. I love both sides of him."

"You don't know his other side though," I took a sharp breath. "I mean he could be a serial killer in the other side."

Volpina looked thoughtful. "But I love his one side enough to love the other side," she smiled.

I stared at her for a straight ten seconds. She was absolutely stunning and gorgeous.

"But maybe he loves someone else," I meekly suggested. "Like maybe that's why he's avoiding you so he could treasure his feelings and stay loyal."

Volpina stayed quiet.

"Maybe," she whispered.

It pained me to see her like this so I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into a friendly bear hug. I mean, it's probably alright since I'm not Jade Turtle, right? First Alya, now Volpina. Everyone loves Jade Turtle but not me.

"Thanks," Volpina mumbled. "You smell a lot like Jade Turtle."

"Hidden doppleganger?" I suggested, shrugging.

Volpina looked at me sharply, looking very suspicious as she narrowed her eyes down at me. It was almost like she could pierced right through me. It was a creepy look.

"You kinda look like him," she murmured thoughtfully.

Alert! I'm going to be busted soon.

"I think it's almost my bedtime," I said, looking at my phone. Okay, it was eight. Congratulations, I just made myself look like some lunatic that slept really early. "I gotta go. See you later, Alya."

"I'm Volpina!" she cried and that's when I realized I said it wrong.

"Oops, I meant Volpina," I cried as I dashed alongside the street and halted and turned around, looking at Volpina. "Hey, on a second thought, you really look like my friend, Alya—"

"Uh, don't you need to go?" Volpina hissed as she pushed me down the street.

The more I thought about, the more it became queer and strange. I blinked and knitted my eyebrows, trying to think of a logical solution. Where was Wayzz when I need him?

"But—" I started but Volpina ran away, running at least a thousand miles a second. I watched her disappear.

Then it clicked into my brain.

Holy camembert.

Wayzz's POV

Yeah, something's definitely coming. Tikki was right. It was etched in the wind of the future.

I wish Nooroo was here, he was an expert on this.

"Wayzz?" Plagg emerged from the thin wooden door as he entered the sanctuary. "I want to ask you something." His face contained mixed emotions.

"Sure," I said, smiling. "Anything for the so-called 'most favorite Kwami'."

Plagg chuckled, "Aww, you jealous?"

I smirked, "Not at all, my man. I know that it doesn't have a single ounce of truth in that statement."

Plagg's mouth was smiling but his eyes contained anxiety.

"It's about Trixx, right?" I sighed.

Plagg's eyes widened. "Do you still have that mind-reading powers?"

"Nope, it's gone," I shrugged nonchalantly. "Now, kitty, you had a question. Shoot it before something bad happens." By bad, I meant Trixx barging into the sanctuary and trying to bury me alive.

"Um," Plagg scratched the back of his head. "You felt the feels, right? And I just wanted to warn you that I'm pretty sure it's going to come from . . . you know."

"Trixx," I said. "Just say her name, it's not cursed."

"Yeah," Plagg said nervously. "I know but it just feels weird. You and I both know she won't hurt a butterfly. It's mostly some mistakes that brings out her worst. And I think . . . the mistake that's triggering her is . . ." His voice trailed away.

"Me," I finished for him. "I know. But I also know that whatever I do, whether it's apologizing and begging for her forgiveness or completely vanishing from the earth's crust, it's not going to work. Trixx is in phase two, she's not going to listen to anyone."

Plagg's face screwed into concern.

I immediately caught it. "It's not just me, is it?" I asked carefully.

Plagg nodded painfully.

"Tikki," Plagg breathed. "She's been pushing Trixx too much. I think it strained both of them but Tikki just doesn't notice it as much Trixx because Trixx is more sensitive in those areas."

I placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know, but we can't do anything," I lied. I knew the perfect solution that would satisfy Trixx but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

"What do we do?" Plagg said in a strained voice.

"We pray," I replied. "We pray that Trixx will cool on her own."

Plagg shuffled. "Wayzz, you do remember the last time Trixx wasn't cooling down, you two ended up blowing up my birthday cake?"

"I also remember Trixx put a dynamite in the cake," I retorted. "Who puts dynamites in cake? If it weren't for Pollen, we were probably half-roasted."

Plagg showed a hint of a smile as he stood up. "Thanks, it's nice hearing proper advice from wise Wayzz."

"Was that a pun?" I smiled. "I think Adrien's really rubbing off you."

Tikki's POV

"Plagg? Do you want to tell me something?" I asked, frowning.

"Nope," Plagg answered back. "Why?"

"You've been staring at me with that weird look for the past hour!" I said. "Either you really have something you want to tell me but you can't or you can tell me but you won't."

Plagg sighed as he pulled me closer. "I'm sorry, Tikki, I've just been a little stressed these days," he whispered as he kissed my forehead.

"Aww, what's bothering you?" I cupped his face with a concerned look.

"Just . . . everything," Plagg sighed. Then he smiled, "Don't worry, it'll be fixed in a whim. I talked to Wayzz and I think we can really figure things out."

"Yeah, Wayzz is good with figuring things out," I nodded. "He does everything so nicely and wisely! He's going to be our wedding planner."

Plagg laughed, "Of course, Wayzz is perfect. He's Wayzz. But what about the pressure?"

"He's Wayzz," I giggled back. "He's perfect."

Plagg paused as if he was going to tell me something and then he shrugged, deciding not to. "But Wayzz sucks at giving advices on confessing your love, that's for sure," he smirked down at me.

"He did give good advices but you didn't have the nerve," I corrected him. Then I paused. "How come he's bad at advices like that when he's the 'Kwami that dated the most'?"

Plagg paused once more. "That's just a phrase," he cooed. "Okay, so the Wayzz we see everyday is an expert at dating. But the Wayzz inside that Wayzz, the true Wayzz, has never dated. There's a slight difference. He can pretend knowing everything but when he wants to give sincere advices, he may fail."

"The Wayzz we see everyday?" I asked. "You mean he's fake? Is that why Trixx is throwing all that drama?"

"It's still Wayzz but it's not his real self," Plagg explained. "Just go ask him yourself, he'll probably avoid it but you'll get some idea."

"That's so weird," I said. "So we'll never meet real Wayzz."

"We might," Plagg shrugged. "If he finds someone to open up."

I mumbled, "Which he probably won't."

Alya's POV

I stood in the middle of my room, pacing around furiously as I flicked around the lights on and off to make my brain cool off.

"Just shoot the question, Alya," Trixx drawled.

"It's not that simple!" I yelled as I gestured at my reporter bulletin board. It would've been usually covered with snapshots and clippings of Ladybug, but right now it was covered with a different person's photos.

Jade Turtle.

Nino Lahiffe.

"I can't believe it!" I screamed. "I mean, I literally saw him every single day! And it all fits into place! He was him all the time; all those times he couldn't do his homework was all because of this . . ." I pulled my hair.

"Just say it," Trixx suggested.

"JADE TURTLE IS NINO?" I bellowed.

Trixx shrugged nonchalantly.

"Oh . . . my . . . gosh," I breathed. Something was wrong. Maybe I was dreaming! Yep, that's it, within a few moment, I would wake up and realize that I didn't do my homework and it would be all normal! I did not meet Jade Turtle and Nino tonight! That would just be—

"Sweetie you're voicing your thoughts," Trixx smiled.

I breathed. "You knew? Did everyone know except me?"

Trixx shrugged, "Well, unlike some stupid pair of Kwamis, I kept my magic with me and I can feel your guys's aura, more importantly, the obvious physical appearance. I mean, I'm surprised the whole world didn't figure out that by now."

"NINO IS JADE TURTLE?" I screamed once more.

Trixx flinched. "You can stop saying that."

I nibbled on my nails. "If I know, I'm pretty sure everyone else figured out, I'm a really dense person!"

Trixx murmured, "Right after Adrien, Nino, Marinette, Tyler, Patrick, sure you are."

"Do you think he knows?" I asked, worried. "This is so awkward! I told everyone that I had a crush on Jade Turtle! This is the awkwardest point of life I've ever been in!"

"To me, the awkwardest point of human life is between birth and death," Trixx rolled her eyes. "Hey, I gotta run I'm not here to listen to your rants. This is almost as intense as when Plagg found his easter egg."

I sighed and slumped on to the bed as Trixx just jumped out of the window.

What was I gonna do?

Nino's POV

"Can you just say that whole thing again?" I asked, my breath short and harsh.

Wayzz raised an eyebrow. "Nino, you're the one that's been doing the talking."

"Okay, can you just say my whole thing again?" I breathed, panting for nonexistent gas.

"Which part?" Wayzz asked. "The part about you rambling that Alya was Volpina or that Volpina was Alya?"

I think I'm going to faint.

"YOU KNEW?" I yelled at him. "And I'm a dense person? I probably figured it out before she did! She's probably still thinking that, that really cool Jade Turtle and that really lame Nino are two different people because they are!"

"No they're not," Wayzz assured me, putting a hand on my shoulder. "It's the same you!"

"No, no, no," I breathed. "When I'm Jade Turtle, you take over me. When I'm Nino, my dumb part of brain take over me. I become awkward! Girls hate awkward!"

"Unless you're Tikki," Wayzz mumbled. Then he hastily added, "Calm down, you're not sure."

"HOW AM I NOT SURE?" I yelled once more. "Same eyes, same personality, same voice, same hair, same nose, same mouth, same ear, same everything! Unless, Alya has some twin, this is just impossible! And I'm telling you, it's going to be weirder if it's her twin!"

"Calm down," Wayzz said. "No big deal."

"NO BIG DEAL?" I yelled a second time. "I just figured out that my crush has a crush on me that's not me!" Okay, I was not making sense. I never am when it comes to important things like . . . Alya.

"Chill," Wayzz said, his eyes widening in shock. "My advice is: forget her, love is stupid."

I arched an eyebrow.

"But," Wayzz said. "My love advices don't really help so go with: follow your heart. I had a really awkward friend and he got through with that advice . . . although, I'm pretty sure that the girl did most of the job." He looked thoughtful all of a sudden.

"Wayzz!" I yelled, shaking him out of his thoughts. "Help me!"

"Be wise," he advised. "But don't be wise if it doesn't follow your heart." His voice sounded unusually hollow.

"Why?" I questioned, confused.

"Because you can," Wayzz smiled. "Some people are incapable of following their heart because that's not what their fate tied them into."

"What?" I asked, even more confused.

Wayzz shrugged, "Forget it, you'll do fine."

No. I'll just be awkward!

I did it
