Steve Harrington wasn't a kids lover, in fact he ended up telling 40 kids at a daycare that Santa wasn't real, leaving him fired for his first job. But he's horrifyingly attached to this band of annoying kids, but a lot of them don't have the best situations.

-Nancy is fine but cannot take care of Mike and Holly so Mike stays home, Karen is neglecting and Ted is abusive
-Max step dad is abusive and a bit smitten with her (mostly implied)
-Lucas's family cannot physically afford the meals, doesn't live with Steve but practically is his child
-Dustin's fine just his bestie (I love his parents okay)
-Wills fine (I COULD NEVER TAKE HIM FROM JOYCE)
-Eleven is not powered she's just a past abused home, Steve doesn't get custody but Hopper does
-not a one-shot real fricken plotline
-there's a similar fanfic on AO3 but it wasn't intended to be like it

Race is very young and in danger, his dad is not a bad person per se, and he genuinely loves Race, but he had bad morals and teaches Race to smoke, gamble, and believes in a abusive punishment system that Race has no idea he should fear. Jack Kelly, the broke college student perusing an art major discovers his situation. Race can be any age suggested 15
