My View on Canon vs. Legends

My own personal view on Canon vs. Legends is a mix of two positions:

1. Patchwork - I take bits and pieces of both canons to create my own blueprint/reference for my books. The Old Republic stuff in Legends, the 2003 Clone Wars, and Unknown Soldier are canon to me as long as they don't contradict the post-2014 canon.

2. Otherwise, Legends is an AU to me.

Oddly enough, the second one is what shapes my position most of the time. I have only read one canon novel, and while I have my eye on Dark Disciple and some other prequel-era reads, I'm just not as interested in canon novels. (Call me a fake fan....I deserve it)

So, why do I prefer Legends to Canon?

1. Most prequel-era content is Legends because LucasFilm seems to be scared of blowback from the fandom.

2. Most canon novels are mediocre in writing quality and/or are about....weird things. (Then again, so is Legends.) I never cared for Phasma in the movies, so why would I want to read a whole book about her backstory? Then again, I'm probably being a hypocrite here.

3. Legends is so interesting because you get to see a patchwork of ideas from different authors, and while sometimes they contradict, they're overall very cool to explore. I think people who skip Legends just because it contradicts are really missing out.

4. Legends is cheaper than canon. I can get a Legends book for $4-5 on Ebay or Thriftbooks. I got the Legends Thrawn Trilogy for $12 on Ebay. The Aftermath Trilogy, on paperback, would have cost me $30 or so at LEAST. And for a book that is average at best and not really my cup of tea....no thanks.

I'm almost totally a canon purist except for the three exceptions I mentioned above. And for people who are scared of getting attached to Legends, I have to say....so what? Even if it doesn't get recanonized, does that make it any less of a good story that's worth your time? I think not. It just doesn't really make sense to me to forego either one (WHICH IS WHY if they have a decent price for the new canon prequel-era reads, I'm getting them).
