Chapter 17: A Heartfelt Discussion
Saya and I found ourselves seated at a small table in our usual spot, the soft ambiance of the restaurant enveloping us. It was time for Saya to share her story, and I was prepared to listen with an open heart.
She began, her voice carrying the weight of her past and her aspirations. "Maik, I need to talk to you about why I want to leave my job as Yuki's caretaker."
I nodded, offering her my full attention as I listened to her story.
"When I first took this job," Saya began, "I was still in senior high school. I needed the salary to cover my living costs, tutoring fees, and save for my university expenses. Now, with just a few months left until graduation, I want to focus on my studies and make memories with my friends. Spending most of my days with Yuki doesn't allow me that freedom."
I understood the gravity of her situation, and I couldn't help but ask, "But Saya, what about your financial needs after you graduate? You'll still need money to sustain yourself."
Saya's response was both thoughtful and determined. "I've managed to save enough money that I can rely on when I graduate. My plan is to secure a higher-paying job to ensure my financial stability."
As she spoke, it became clear that Saya had made up her mind to move forward with her plans, and I felt a sense of unease. I had grown to trust her implicitly with Yuki's safety, and the idea of someone else taking on that responsibility was unsettling.
Despite my reservations, I attempted to engage her in a conversation to dissuade her from leaving. Hours passed as we exchanged our perspectives, our voices occasionally raised in the heat of the moment.
In a last-ditch effort to persuade her, I extended an offer. "Saya," I began, "what if you consider working only on weekends for a few hours? I'll double your current salary as compensation."
Saya hesitated for a moment, her resolve wavering. But after a pause, she gently declined my offer.
I wasn't ready to give up, and so I made another proposal, this time offering three times her current salary for just two hours of work on weekends. The offer hung in the air, tempting and enticing.
Saya, torn between her desire for a fresh start and the allure of the generous offer, finally nodded in agreement. "All right, Maik, I'll accept your offer. It's an opportunity I can't turn down."
As our conversation drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of relief and uncertainty. Saya's decision meant she would still be a part of our lives, even if it was for a limited time each week. Our paths were set, and the future awaited us with its challenges and uncertainties.
