4. pieces of a puzzle

Pacifica couldn't take it anymore, she couldn't sit there anymore and pretend that everything was okay. Especially when it wasn't.

She got up from the chair too fast for either of the Gleeful twins to process and moved swiftly to her room.

Of course it used to be Dipper's room, but it wasn't anymore. He'd left and it didn't belong to him anymore. Most of his stuff had been moved a few weeks after he'd been gone. She hadn't been able to bring herself to touch any of his things.

"Why do I even live here anymore?" She asked herself, shaking her head. "I should be gone. Stay away forever. Get a new job."

Grabbing a duffel bag, she almost shoved a ton of her clothes into it, but she stopped herself. Why the hell did she have to leave when Dipper didn't even live there anymore? She had more of a right there than he did, and at least she got along with his family.

A knock on the door, jolted her out of her thoughts. "Who is it?"

"Mabel."

"Come in." Pacifica sat down on the bed and sighed. "Or whatever."

Mabel quickly entered the room and shut the door. "It's cold in here." She wrapped her arms around herself and chuckled. "Did the thermostat break or something?"

"Mabel, enough of the small-talk." Pacifica shook her head. "I can see right through you."

"I'll take it that you can." She muttered and sat down next to her.

"You knew Dipper was coming." Pacifica frowned. "Hell, you invited him. Just when I got over him."

"Wait," Mabel's expression changed from humorous to shock. "You're over him?"

"For awhile now, Mabes." Pacifica stated. "How hard is that to believe?"

"For one you stay in his room."

"Because it's a big room and there's more space." Pacifica frowned. "Why didn't you tell me he was coming?"

"I dunno." Mabel admitted sadly. "I just wanted my brother back."

"What the hell happened between you two?" Pacifica asked.

"It's. . ." she trailed off, looking out the window. "It's complicated."

"I see." Pacifica muttered. "Why the hell is he back?"

"Stanford's getting sicker." Mabel admitted. "I'm afraid it's more than just the flu."

Pacifica frowned. "And you couldn't handle this yourself?"

"I'm giving Stanford what he wants." She informed. "If this is his. . .final wish, then I won't deny him that."

Pacifica bit her lip and kept her frown on her face, not swaying one bit. "I can't believe you'd go behind my back like that."

"Hey," Mabel held up her hands. "We may live together, work together, and be friendly, but if I have to choose between making you happy or myself happy, I'd choose myself all the way. Even if it hurts you."

"Gee, I'm touched." Pacifica rolled her eyes. "How long is he staying?"

"As long as need be." Mabel muttered harshly. "Until Stanford's better, and unless Dipper wants to stay." She chuckled humorlessly.

Pacifica heaved a sigh and rested her chin on her hands. "It's been a year, I'm over Dipper."

"So you say."

"Mabel, you're not playing matchmaker." Pacifica warned. "Besides, I meant to tell you this earlier. . ."

"What, Paz?" Mabel raised a brow and cursed her curious side.

"Tomorrow night I, I have a date."

If she'd been drinking anything, Mabel would have spit it out immediately. "You have a date?! Why did you wait so long to tell me?! Who?!"

"Don't laugh," Pacifica groaned. "Cody Chiu. From Tech G."

Mabel laughed aloud. "I can't say I'm surprised. While I haven't been there long, it's obvious he's got a mad crush on you, Paz."

"I know." Pacifica whispered. "And I know how much it hurt him when I told him about Dipper."

"Well," she drawled. "Did anyone else figure out that the whole marriage was a sham?"

Pacifica bit her lip again, almost hard enough to draw blood. "Surprisingly, not a one."

"Wow, I'm impressed." Mabel stood up and looked toward the window. "Getting married was something Dipper didn't think through."

"What do you mean?" Pacifica tilted her head to the side. Mabel was spilling information about Dipper without realizing it. Perhaps it would help.

"Well, sure, marriage is wonderful for publicity, but Dipper isn't built for marriage." Mabel explained softly. "The only love he saw was the love between our parents. They were cold and distant with each other, that's what he grew up knowing love was all about. But then of course, my parents' marriage had plenty of excitement, because it was all lustful." She shuddered. "That's what Dipper knew."

Pacifica nodded. That explained his sudden jump from icy-cold distance, to lust-filled stares. While it was slightly disturbing, it helped her figure a few points out.

"Dipper's an. . .interesting person." Mabel admitted. "To say the least."

That last remark was enough to make Pacifica laugh for a few seconds. "How close were the two of you?" She dared to ask.

Mabel's face blanched. "What do you mean?"

"Like, you must've been close as kids, right? Before he. . .left?"

Mabel stood up. "I don't feel like discussing Dipper's and my childhood. Dipper and I were close, yes, but it all changed when he left. Is that what you wanted to hear?" She stormed out of the room in a flash of anger and slammed the door before Pacifica could react.

Groaning aloud, Pacifica slammed her fist down on the bed. She had gained a piece to the puzzle of Dipper's past, but it wasn't it.

She wasn't sure what enough would even be with him. But one thing Pacifica was certain of, is that she would leave him alone and hope that he would have the courtesy to do the same.
