Chapter 8

After traveling for a few days, Team Avatar decided to set up camp in the forest. "Where's Momo?" Aang asked.

[Y/n] looked around and heard screeching in the distance. Aang, Sokka, Katara, and [Y/n] went looking for their little friend. They found Momo stuck in a trap along with other Hog Monkeys.

"Hang on, Momo!" Aang said and jumped into the tree to untie Momo's trap. Once the trap was lowered to the ground, Katara and Sokka opened the trap, and Momo jumped into [Y/n]'s arms.

[Y/n]'s saddened while looking up at the two Hog Monkeys as they grunted and howled. "Alright, you too." Aang said and went to untie the traps.

"This is going to take forever." Sokka groaned as he pulled out his boomerang and used it to cut the traps down.

"That works." Aang said.

[Y/n] smiled and waved at the monkeys as they ran way. "These are Fire Nation traps. You can tell from the metalwork." Sokka said, "We'd better pack up camp and get moving."

"That would be best." [Y/n] added, and they went to pack up. They loaded their things on Appa. "Uh-uh! No flying this time." Sokka said.

"Huh? Why wouldn't we fly?" Aang questioned.

"Think about it. Somehow Prince Zuko and the Fire Nation keep finding us. It's because they spot Appa, he's just too noticeable." Sokka explained.

"What? Appa's not too noticeable." Katara said.

"He's a gigantic fluffy monster with an arrow on his head! It's kind of hard to miss him." Sokka said, and Appa's growled.

"Sokka's just jealous because he doesn't have an arrow." Aang said.

"I know you all want to fly, but my instincts tell me we should play it safe this time and walk." Sokka said.

"Who made you the boss?" Katara asked while raising a brow at Sokka.

"I'm not the boss, I'm the leader." Sokka said and pointed at himself. Katara scoffed. "You're the leader?" She questioned, "But your voice still cracks."

"I'm the oldest, and I'm a warrior." Sokka's voice cracked, "So I'm the leader."

"[Y/n] is older than you and went through training in the Fire Nation." Katara said, and [Y/n] shook her head. "I refuse to get in involved." She said.

"If anyone's the leader, it's Aang. I mean, He is the Avatar." Katara added.

"Are you kidding? He's just a goofy kid." Sokka said.

They looked at Aang who was hanging upside down on Appa's horn. "He's right." Aang said.

"Why do boys always think someone has to be the leader?" Katara questioned, "I bet you wouldn't be so bossy if you kissed a girl."

[Y/n] covered her mouth to prevent a laugh. She didn't want to hurt the boy's poor ego, especially since her first and only kiss when with Zuko. Sokka blushed and glared at his sister. "I've kissed a girl. You just haven't met her." Sokka said, avoiding eye contact.

"Who? Gran-Gran? I've met Gran-Gran." Katara said.

"No, besides Gran-Gran. Look, my instincts tell me we have a better chance of slipping through on foot, and a leader has to trust his instincts." Sokka said.

"Sokka does have a point. Fire soldiers are near we should be more cautious about our travel." [Y/n] said, and Katara crossed her arms. "Okay, we'll try it his way." She said.

"Who knows? Walking might be fun." Aang said.

After a few hours of walking, Aang's attitude changed. "Walking stinks! How did people go anywhere without a flying Bison?" He complained as they continued to walk.

"I don't know, Aang. Why don't you ask Sokka's instincts? They seem to know everything." Katara said.

"Ha. Ha. Very funny." Sokka said, sarcastically.

"I'm tired of carrying this pack." Aang said.

"You know who you should ask to carry it for a while? Sokka's instincts!" Katara said.

"That's a great idea!" Hey, Sokka's instincts, do you-"

"Okay, Okay, I got it." Sokka said, "Look, guys, I'm tired, too. But the important thing is that we're safe from the Fire Nation." Sokka pushed past a bush, and they walked right into a Fire Nation camp. All of the soldiers looked at them for a moment.

"Run!" Sokka said, and everyone dropped their packs. But when they tried to escape, one soldier blocked their path with fire. "We're cut off!" Sokka said as he backed away.

[Y/n] let Momo go into the tree where he would be safe.

"Sokka, your shirt!" Aang panicked while pointing at the fire on Sokka's shirt. Katara used the water from her canister to put it out. They were surrounded. "If you let us pass, we promise not to hurt you." Sokka said, and [Y/n] got into a fighting stance.

"What are you doing?" Katara asked.

"Bluffing." Sokka muttered.

"You, promise not to hurt us?" The captain repeated and suddenly fell to the ground.

"Nice work, Sokka. How did you do that?" Aang asked Sokka.

"Uh...instincts." Sokka said.

"Look!" Katara announced and pointed into the tree. The boy jumped out and took out a few Fire Soldiers. "Down you go." He said.

"They're in the trees!" One solider announced, and a boy jumped on his back.

[Y/n] was impressed at how fast these fighters took out the soldiers. [Y/n] used Earthbending to knock a few soldiers down that came a bit too close. After taking down the last soldier, the mystery boy stumbled in front [Y/n]. "Hey." He greeted with a sly smile.

"Hello." [Y/n] greeted as well.

"You just took out a whole army almost single-handed." Aang said.

"Army?!" Sokka questioned, "There were only like 20 guys."

"My name is Jet, and these are my Freedom Fighter. Sneers, Longshot, Smellerbee, the Duke, and Pipsqueak." Jet said, and Aang laughed. "Pipsqueak, that's a funny name." Aang said, and the Duke sniffed.

"You think my name if funny?" Pipsqueak asked.

"It's hilarious!" Aang said, and Pipsqueak laughed then knocked Aang down. [Y/n] smiled at how easily Aang could make friends with others.

"Why are pouting, Sokka?" [Y/n] questioned while walking up to Sokka.

"I'm not pouting!" He snapped.

"Do you want to at least thank Jet for saving us?" [Y/n] asked, and Sokka crossed his arms then shock his head. [Y/n] shrugged and walked over to Katara and Jet. "Thank you, again, for rescuing us, Jet." [Y/n] said.

"I should be thanking you. We were walking to ambush those soldiers all morning." Jet said, "We just needed the right distraction. Then you guys stumbled in."

"We were relying on instincts." Katara said while giving Sokka the side-eye. "You'll get yourself killed doing that." Jet said, and [Y/n] gave Sokka a worried look as he walked away.

For some odd reason, Jet kind of reminded [Y/n] of Zuko. [Y/n] grabbed her wrist only to find that her bracelet still wasn't there. No matter how hard [Y/n] thought, she couldn't remember where she'd lost it. Without her bracelet, it was like [Y/n]'s lost her Zuko completely.

~~

Jet took team Avatar back to his hideout. "It is beautiful up here." [Y/n] cooed. "It's beautiful and more importantly, it's where the Fire Nation can't find us." Jet said. "They would love to find you, wouldn't they, jet?" Smellerbee questioned.

"It's not going to happen, Smellerbee." Jet said and led the way further in their hideout.

"Why does the Fire Nation want to find you?" Katara asked.

"I guess you could say I've been causing them a little trouble. See, they took over a nearby Earth Kingdom town a few years back." Jet explained.

"We've been ambushing their troops, cutting off their supply lines, and doing anything we can to mess with them." Pipsqueak said.

"One day, we'll run the Fire Nation out for here for good and free that town." Jet said, and Katara blushed. "That's so brave." Katara said while [Y/n] nodded. "How noble of you." She agreed.

"Yeah, nothing's braver than a guy in a treehouse." Sokka said.

"Sokka..."

"Don't pay any attention to my brother." Katara said. "No problem, he probably had a rough day." Jet said.

"Living surrounded by nature seems quite lovely..." [Y/n] said with a dreamily sigh, "Do you all live here?"

"That's right." Jet said, "Longshot over there, his town was got burned down by the Fire Nation, and we found the Duke trying to steal our food. I don't think he ever really had a home."

"What about you?" Katara asked, and Jet stopped walking. So did [Y/n] and Katara. "The Fire Nation killed my parents. I was only 8 years old. That day changed me forever." Jet said, and [Y/n]'s eyes widened a bit.

"Sokka and I lost our mother to the Fire Nation." Katara said.

"I'm so sorry, Katara." Jet said.

"It must be hard for the two of you." [Y/n] said with a saddened look, "I'm so very sorry."

"What happened to your parents? Did you know them?" Jet asked while placing his hand on [Y/n]'s shoulder. "I..." [Y/n] took a deep breath, remembering her mother and father, "I rather not talk about it." She continued to walk.

Later the Freedom Fighters and Team Avatar had dinner together. "Today, we struck another blow against the Fire Nation swine." Jet toasted, and the fighters cheered, "I got special joy from the look on one soldier's face when the Duke dropped down on his helmet and rode like him like a wild hog-monkey."

The Duke stood up, and everyone cheered for him. [Y/n] giggled and clapped for the boy as she pranced around on the table. "Now, the Fire Nation thinks they don't have to worry about a couple of kids hiding in the trees." Jet said, and the fighters booed, "Or maybe, they're dead wrong." The fighters cheered. After his speech, Jet sat between [Y/n] and Katara.

"Hey, Jet, nice speech." Katara said, and [Y/n] nodded in agreement. "Very inspirational." [Y/n] added.

"Thanks. By the way, I was really impressed with you, Katara, and Aang. That was some great bending I saw out there today." Jet said to [Y/n], who looked a bit shocked.

[Y/n] noticed Katara's jealous look. "Oh, no. Katara and Aang are great on their own." [Y/n] waved it off, "Aang is the Avatar, after all."

Jet looked at Aang, "Avatar, huh? Very nice."

"Thanks, Jet." Aang said.

"So, I might know a way that you guys can help in our struggle." Jet said, and Sokka stood up. "Unfortunately, we have to leave tonight." He said and began to walk away.

"Sokka, you're kidding me. I needed you on an important mission tomorrow." Jet said.

"What mission?" Sokka questioned.

~~~
[Y/n] found Sokka, sitting with a glaring look on his face, after his mission with Jet. "Hey, Sokka. Is Jet back?" Katara asked as [Y/n] walked closer to them with a little bird that landed on her shoulder earlier that day. "Yeah, he's back. But we're leaving." Sokka said.
"What?"
"But I made him this hat." Katara said while pulling out a hat from behind her back. It wasn't very fashionable in [Y/n]'s opinion, but she was too nice to say that. "Aww, cute." [Y/n] lied, "Sokka, what happened to make you so upset?"
"Your boyfriend Jet's a thug." Sokka said to Katara.
"What? No, he's not." She said.
"He's messed up, Katara."
"He's not messed up. He's just got a different way of life. A really fun way of life." Aang said.
"He beat and robbed a harmless old man." Sokka said. "I want to hear Jet's side of the story." Katara said and crossed her arms.
[Y/n] did have a pretty go habit of reading people. "I think we should hear from both sides." [Y/n] said.
"Seriously, [Y/n]?! You don't believe me either?" Sokka snapped, causing the bird to fly away, "Don't tell me that you like him better than me, too?!"
"What do you mean?" [Y/n] said and grabbed her wrist, "Of course not. I'm only saying before we make a rash decision to abandon a sanctuary like this..." She knew Sokka was telling his truth, but [Y/n] wanted to see if Jet would lie about it.
So, they went to find Jet and hear his side of the story. "Sokka, you told them what happened, but you didn't mention that the guy was Fire Nation?" Jet said.
"No, he conveniently left that out." Katara said. "Fine, but even if he was Fire Nation, he was a harmless civilian." Sokka said.
"He was an assassin, Sokka." Jet said and pulled out a knife then stabbed it on table, "See? There's a compartment for poison in the knife. He was sent to eliminate me. You help save my life, Sokka."
"I knew there was an explanation." Katara said, and [Y/n] hummed.
"I didn't see any knife." Sokka said while raising a brow. "That's because he was concealing it." Jet said.
"See, Sokka." Katara said. "Perhaps you didn't notice the knife." [Y/n] played along.
"There was no knife!" Sokka snapped, "I'm going back to the hut and packing my things."
"Sokka..."
"Tell me you guys aren't leaving yet. I really need your help." Jet said. "What can we do?" Aang asked.
"The Fire Nation is planning on burning down our forest. If you and Katara use waterbending to fill the reservoir, we could fight the fires." Jet explained, "But if you leave now, they'll destroy the whole valley." The two benders gave a worried look while [Y/n] gave a skeptical look.
Aang and Katara walked to their hut to talk to Sokka while [Y/n] stayed behind. "Why did you just lie to us?" [Y/n] asked as she raised a brow.
Jet smirked as he stood up. His arms snaked around [Y/n]'s waist, and he pulled her close to his chest. Jet tilted [Y/n]'s face upward using his thumb and pointer finger. "I would never lie to you." Jet said in a gentle tone. [Y/n] gave an uncomfortable look and gently tried to push him away.
'Definitely not like Zuko! Definitely not like Zuko!' [Y/n] thought.
"You just lied again, and please, let go of me." [Y/n] said, and Jet held her tighter, "Why? I see why Sokka is jealous. I notice the way you look at me." Jet said, and [Y/n] finally got him off of her.
"Sokka has nothing to do with this." [Y/n] said, "You're hiding something, and I want to know what you are hiding."
"[Y/n]..." Jet said as he circled around the smaller girl, " It's a necessary sacrifice for the war. The Fire Nation... they took everything from me. You wouldn't understand the pain Katara and I feel."
"Oh, you have no idea what I understand. Now, what are you planning?" [Y/n] said and glared. Jet quickly grabbed [Y/n] by her wrist and tied her up.
~~
[Y/n] spent all night tied up and gagged with a ribbon. Once she was sure Jet was gone and wasn't coming back, [Y/n] used her fire to burn the ropes that were around her wrists and breath out rainbow flames to burn the ribbon in her mouth. [Y/n] dusted herself off. "It's always rope." [Y/n] muttered and peeked out of the hut, "And no guard. Jet, you foolish boy."
[Y/n] climbed to the top of the tree and whistle. She waited for a moment, and Appa flew in, picking [Y/n] up.
"[Y/n]?!" Sokka, who was sitting on Appa's head, said in shock. She smiled, glad to see Sokka. [Y/n] pat Appa's head. "You should know by now that Appa comes to me when I call." [Y/n] said then her look turned into a guilty one, "I'm sorry that I didn't believe you, Sokka. Can you ever forgive me?"
"Hmm, I'll think about it." Sokka teased, and [Y/n] elbowed him in the arm. "But, we have to save the Earth Kingdom town before Jet floods it." Sokka said, and [Y/n] nodded, "Yip yip!"
Appa flew towards the Earth Kingdom town, but once [Y/n] was wanted by the Fire Nation, she had to stay with Appa while Sokka went to convince the people to evacuate. Soon, after much trouble, the citizens were safe, and Sokka and [Y/n] went to find Katara and Aang.
"Jet, you monster!"
"This was a victory, Katara. Remember that. The Fire Nation is gone, and this valley will be safe." Jet, who was iced to a tree trunk, said as Appa approached them. "It will be safe, without you." Sokka said while [Y/n] waved down at her friends.
"Sokka! [Y/n]!" Katara cheered.
"Sokka warned the villagers of your plan, just in time." [Y/n] said.
"What?!" Jet yelled.
"At first, they didn't believe me. The Fire Nation soldiers assumed I was a spy. But one man vouched for me, the old man you attacked." Sokka said, "He urged them to trust me, and we got everyone out in time."
"Sokka, you fool! We could have freed this valley!" Jet yelled as Katara and Aang got into Appa's saddle. "Who would be free? Everyone would be dead." Sokka said.
"You, traitors!"
"No, Jet, you've become the traitor. I may not completely understand the pain the Fire Nation has caused the world, but innocent people shouldn't have to die for your cause." [Y/n] said and glared at Jet.
"Katara, please, help me." Jet begged. "Good-bye, Jet." Katara said.
"Yip, yip." Sokka said, and Appa flew away.
"We thought you were going to the dam." Aang said to Sokka, "How could you went to the town instead?"
"Let me guess, your instincts told you?" Katara questioned.
"Hey, sometimes they're right." Sokka said, and [Y/n] giggled, "What?"
"We're going the wrong way." [Y/n] said, and the other laughed as well. "And sometimes they're wrong." Sokka said and used Appa's reins to turn Appa around.
"Where were you, [Y/n]? We were looking for you all morning before, you know." Katara asked.
"Jet tied me up in his hut after I caught him lying." [Y/n] said, casually.
"What?!"
Soon, it was nightfall, Aang and Katara had fallen asleep while Sokka and [Y/n] sat on Appa's head. "Sokka... there is something I've been meaning to talk to you about. I just never knew how." [Y/n] said.
"You're rejecting me...aren't you?" Sokka questioned. He didn't seem as disappointed [Y/n] thought he would be which made it a bit easier on [Y/n]. She sadly nodded. "I'm sorry, Sokka. You're a really sweet guy, and you and Katara are like siblings to me, but I just don't believe I'm the right girl for you." [Y/n] said, "The girl from Kyoshi Island would be perfect for you. She did give you a kiss after all."
Sokka blushed, "You saw that?" [Y/n] nodded. "Any girl would be lucky to have you." She said, and Sokka smiled a bit. "Thanks, [Y/n]."
