Chapter 4
Aang, Sokka, Katara and [Y/n] walked along the snowy/sandy terrain overlooking the city of Omashu. "The Earth Kingdom city of Omashu!" Aang announced, "I used to always come here to visit my friend Bumi."
"Wow! We don't have cities like this in the South Pole." Katara said.
"They have cities here that don't melt." Sokka added.
The siblings were in awe. 'Perhaps I shouldn't tell them I grew up in a palace.' [Y/n] thought.
"Well, let's go slowpokes." Aang said, "The real fun is inside the city!" He jumped down the hill.
"Wait, Aang." Katara stopped him, "It could be dangerous if people find out you're the Avatar."
"You need a disguise." Sokka said, and [Y/n] nodded in agreement. "It's the best option." She said, and Sokka awkwardly glanced at her.
Aang gave a confused look, "What am I supposed to do? Grow a mustache?"
[Y/n] looked back at Appa and had an idea. She made a wig and mustache out of Appa's fur. "Oh, this is so itchy." Aang complained then looked at Appa, "How do you live in this stuff?"
Appa snorted at Aang while [Y/n] patted Appa's head.
"Great, you look just like my grandfather." Sokka said with a deadpanned look.
"Technically, Aang is 112 years old." Katara said. Aang picked up his glider and used it as a cane. "Now, let's get to skipping, young whippersnappers!" He made is voice sound like an old man, the big city awaits."
Katara, Sokka and [Y/n] looked at each other confused. They made their way down the long trail to the city. "You guys are going to love Omashu." Aang said, "The people here are the friendliest in the world."
"Aang, it has been 100 year since-"
"Rotten cabbages?! What kind of slum do you think this is?!"
The guard used his earthbending to knock the cabbage cart off over the cliff.
"No! My cabbages!" The merchant cried. They four travelers watched as the cart was destroyed.
"Just keep smiling." Aang muttered, and they continued to walk.
Katara smiled awkwardly while Sokka had a deadpanned look, and [Y/n] had a small smile on her face.
They approached the guards. One of the guards held a boulder over Aang. "State your business."
Aang ran close to the guard. "My business is my business, young man, and none of yours." He nagged and pointed in the man's face, "I've got half a mind to bend you over my knee and paddle your backside."
"Settle down, Old Timer." The guard said, "Just tell me who you are."
"Name's Bonzoo Pippenpadlopsicopolis the third." Aang said, "And these are my grandkids."
Katara walked next to Aang, "Hi. June Pippenpadlopsicopolis. Nice to meet you." She said, and the guard rubbed his chin.
"You seem like a responsible young lady." He said, "See that your grandfather stays out of trouble. Enjoy Omashu." He stepped out of the way.
"We will." They walked.
"Wait a minute." The guard said and grabbed Sokka, "You're a strong young boy. Show some respect for the elderly and carry your grandfather's bag."
Sokka had a deadpanned look. "Good idea!" Aang said and threw his bag at Sokka. Then the gates to Omashu opened.
[Y/n] and the others looked around in awe. She'd never been outside of the Fire Nation before. The city of Omashu was an amazing sight. "This is that Omashu delivery system-- miles and miles of tubes and chutes. Earthbending brings the packages up and gravity brings them down."
"It's such a convenient system." [Y/n] muttered, still looking in awe.
"Great, so they get their mail on time." Sokka said with a deadpanned look.
"They do get their mail on time, but my friend Bumi found a better use for these chutes." Aang said with a mischievous grin.
The four friends squeezed into the large package bin on the top of the mailing slide. [Y/n] was squeezed between Katara and Sokka. "One ride then we're off to the North Pole. Airbender's Honor."
[Y/n] looked down at the steep slope of the mailing chute. She unknowingly clutched on Sokka's hand, causing him to blush.
"This sounded like fun at first, but now that I'm here, I'm starting to have second thoughts!" Aang leaned forward, and they went sliding down.
Aang was laugh with joy while Katara and Sokka screamed, and [Y/n] held her eyes shut. [Y/n] peeked an eye open to see there were sharp spears sliding next to them.
The slide merged, and the spears were right behind them. [Y/n] gasped and pushed Sokka's head down and laid on his chest to avoid getting stabbed.
"I'm on it!" Aang said and titled the bin, making it fly over the edge of the slide. Katara, Sokka and [Y/n] continued to scream. They slid off a roof top then bounced off the ground. They blow through and couple of barriers and landed back on the slide.
"Aang, do something!" Katara said, "Use you're Airbending."
"Yeah! Good idea!" Aang said, "That will make us go even faster." He made them go down the slid faster.
They were approaching a checkpoint in the system that was block by another bin. The kids screamed. Luckly the guard moved the bin to the side with Earthbending then pulled up another one, causing them to scream again and crush into it.
Katara, Aang, Sokka and [Y/n] went flying into the air. Aang used his airbending to move the bin under them again. They landed inside the bin, and the bin slid on top of a house.
They slid through various places, destroying property and structures then they finally landed on top of a merchant's cabbage cart.
"My cabbages! You're gonna pay for this!" He yelled and then they were surround by guards.
~~
Aang, Katara, Sokka and [Y/n] were taken to see the king of Omashu. They looked down in shame as the guards made them kneel. "Your majesty, these juveniles were arrested. For vandalism, traveling under false pretenses, and malicious destruction of cabbages."
"Off with their head. One for each head of cabbage!" The merchant yelled.
"Silence! Only the king can pass down judgement." The guard said, "What is your judgement, Sire?"
The king stared at them for a moment. Sokka and Aang avoided eye contact while Katara and [Y/n] looked at them with pleading eyes.
"Thow them..." The king said, "A feast."
"Huh?" Everyone gave confused looks. The guards did as they were told and threw them a feast. The kids sat at a table looking down at all of the food in front of them.
"The people in my city have gotten fat from too many feasts. So, I hope you like your chicken with no skin." The king said.
[Y/n] was still a bit confused about the situation they were in. "Thanks, but I don't eat meat." Aang said.
"How about you?" The king asked Sokka, "I bet you like meat." He shoved the chicken in Sokka's mouth then walked away.
"Is it me or is this guy's crown a little crooked?" Katara questioned.
"He is very strange." [Y/n] added from the other side of Katara.
"So, tell me, young bald one, where are you from?" The King questioned.
"I'm from Kangaroo Island." Aang said.
"Oh, Kangaroo Island, eh?" The King repeated, "I hear that place is really hopping." He joked, and there was a moment of silence.
Then Sokka laughed, resulting in his friends and sister giving him confused and concerned looks. "What?" He questioned, "It was pretty funny."
The king yawned, "All these good jokes are making me tired. Guess it's time to hit the hay." He said and threw chicken at Aang, who caught it with his airbending, revealing that he is the Avatar.
"There's an Airbender in our presence, and not just any Airbender-- The Avatar!" Aang had a nervous look, "Now, what do you have to say for yourself, Mr. Pippenpadlopsicopolis?
"Okay, you caught me." Aang said, standing with his hands in the air, "I'm the Avatar... Doing my Avatar thing. Keeping the world safe. Everything checks out. No Firebenders here." [Y/n] looked to the side while he pulled her, Katara and Sokka close "So, good work, everybody. Love each other, respect all life, and don't run with your spears." Aang led his friends to the door. "We'll see you next time!"
But the guards blocked their way. "You can't keep us here." Katara said, "Let us leave!"
"Lettuce leaf?" The king questioned and ate the lettuce.
"We're in serious trouble." Sokka whispered, "This guys is nuts."
"Tomorrow, the avatar will face 3 deadly challenges. But for now, the guards will show you to your chamber."
"My liege, do you mean the good chamber or the bad chamber?"
"The newly refurbished chamber."
"Wait. Which one are we talking about?" The guard questioned.
"The one the used to be the bad chamber until the recent refurbishing, that is. Of course, we've been calling it the new chamber but we really shoulder number them. Uh... Take them to the refurbished chamber that was once bad."
The guards too them away and shoved them into their cell. "This is a prison cell? But it's so nice." Katara said.
"He did say it was newly refurbished." Aang said.
"Nice or not, we're prisoners." Sokka said.
"I have to agree with Sokka. This is setting us back in our journey to the North Pole." [Y/n] said.
"I wonder what these challenges will be." Aang muttered.
"We're not sticking around to find out. There's gotta be some way out of here."
[Y/n] looked around for a way out. There were stone walls all around them. She could use Earthbending to get out of the prison. But a thought struck [Y/n]'s mind.
What would be the point of putting Aang through all of these trails? This isn't a Fire Nation colony, so what would be the point of killing the Avatar.
There is a reason this crazy king is going through all of this trouble and putting Aang to the test. The king knows something.
Best to watch and see how this plays out.
~~
Aang stood in front of the king of Omashu after completing all of his deadly challenges. All Aang had to do left was guess the king's name. "I solved the question he same way I solved the challenges." Aang said, "As you said a long time ago, I had to open my brain to the possibilities. Bumi, you're a mad genius."
Aang ran over to Bumi and hugged him, "Oh, Aang, it's good to see you. You haven't changed a bit. Literally." King Bumi said.
Katara, Sokka and [Y/n] waddled their way over to them almost completely incased in crystals. "Uh, over here." Katara said.
"Little help." Sokka said.
"We would like to be released now." [Y/n] added, and Bumi released them.
"Genomite is made out of rock candy." Bumi said and ate a piece, "Delicious."
"So, this crazy king is your old friend Bumi?" Katara questioned.
"Who you calling old?" Bumi question then thought for a moment, "Okay, I'm old."
"Why did you do all this instead of just telling Aang who you were?" Sokka asked.
"First of all, it's pretty fun messing with people." Bumi said with a laugh, "But I do have a reason. Aang, you have a difficult task ahead. The world has changed in the 100 years you've been gone. It's the duty of the Avatar to restore balance to the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai. You have much to learn. You must master the 4 elements and confront the Fire Lord. And when you do, I hope you will think like a mad genius."
Aang smiled and bowed at Bumi. "And it looks like you're in good hands. You'll need your friends to help you defeat the Fire Nation."
[Y/n] smiled, and Momo jumped on Aang's shoulder. "And you'll need Momo too."
"Thank you for your wisdom. But before we leave, I have a challenge for you." Aang said.
They went up to the slide of the mailing system. [Y/n] smiled at the friends being reunited.
"Um, [Y/n]..." Sokka called out to her as they made their way back to Appa, "When... um, about Zuko..." He didn't know where to start.
Sokka's been waiting over 2 years to tell her his feeling. "Can... we not speak about that right now?" [Y/n] said and walked ahead of him.
~~
[Y/n] hummed a bit hearing the beautiful songs of birds chirping while she and Katara set up camp. Aang was resting on a tree trunk, and Sokka forging for food.
Soon, Sokka came back. "Great. You're back. What's for dinner?" Aang asked.
"We got a few options." Sokka said and reached in the bag, "Frist round nuts and some kind of oval-shaped nuts. And some rock shaped nuts that night be rocks. Dig in."
Katara, Aang and [Y/n] blinked and looked in confusion. "Seriously, what else you got?"
"We can't survive off of only nuts." [Y/n] said, and Sokka looked into his bag, still seeing nothing.
Suddenly, they heard a loud boom. "What was that?" Sokka questioned then there was another loud boom.
"It's coming from over there." Aang said, pointing in the direction of the sound. Him and Katara went running towards the sound.
"Shouldn't we run away from huge booms, not towards them?" Sokka questioned.
"Someone could be in danger." [Y/n] said, running after them.
The source of the sound was a boy Earthbending. "An Earthbender..." Katara muttered.
"Let's go meet him." Aang suggested with excitement.
"He looks dangerous, so we better approach cautiously." Sokka said, but Katara was already approaching the boy.
"Hello there! I'm Katara! What's your name?" She asked, and [Y/n] sighed.
The boy stopped then ran away using his Earthbending to block the path.
"Nice to meet you!" Aang yelled, but the boy was long gone. "I just wanted to say hi." Katara said.
"Perhaps Earthbending isn't some he should be doing." [Y/n] muttered while rubbing her chin.
"Hey, that guy's got to be running somewhere. Maybe we're near a village, and I bet that village has a market." Aang said.
"Which means no nuts for dinner." Katara said.
"I surely hope so." [Y/n] said as she ran behind Aang and Katara.
"Hey! I worked hard to get those nuts." Sokka said, "Yeah, I hate them too."
The traveler made it to the village. [Y/n] shopped around for some food while Aang and the other did their own thing.
Katara noticed the boy that they met earlier going inside a store. [Y/n], Aang and Sokka noticed Katara follow him.
[Y/n] gave a confused look and followed after Katara. "Hey! You're that kid. Why did you run away before?" She questioned.
"Uh... You must have me confused with some other kid." The kid, Haru, said.
"No, she doesn't. We saw you Earthbending." Aang said, and they gasped. Haru's mother closed the door and windows.
"They saw you doing what?" She questioned.
"They're crazy, Mom. I mean, look at how they're dressed." Haru said, and they looked at eachother.
Aang was dressed in his usual airbender attire while [Y/n], Sokka, and Katara had outfits from the Southern Water Tribe.
"You know dangerous that is." Haru's mother said, "You know what would happen if they caught you Earthbending."
There was a loud knock on the door. "Open up!" Sokka looked out the window. "Fire Nation." He said and quickly took the hat off of Aang's head and put it on [Y/n]'s to hide her face, "Act natural."
Haru's mother opened the door, and a Fire solider walked in. "What do you want? I've already paid you this week."
"The tax just doubled." The solider said and ignited fire in his hands, "And we wouldn't want an accident, would we? Fire is sometimes so hard to control."
Haru's mother glared at the man then pulled out a box from behind the counter. She handed the man all the money they had left.
"You can keep the copper ones." He said, in disgust, throwing them on the ground then he left.
[Y/n] tilted the hat back up. "Nice guy." Sokka said, glaring at the door, "How long has the Fire Nation been here?"
"Five years. Fire Lord Ozai uses our towns coil mines to fuel his ships."
"They're thugs. They steal from us. And everyone here is too much of a coward to do anything about it." Haru said and crossed his arms, and [Y/n]'s eyes saddened.
"Quiet, Haru! Don't talk like that."
"But Haru's an Earthbender. He can help." Katara said.
"Earthbending is forbidden. It's caused nothing but misery for this village. He must never use is abilities."
"How can you say that?" Katara questioned, "Haru has a gift. Asking him not to Earthbend is like asking me not to Waterbend. It's a part of who we are."
"You don't understand."
"Katara, I think you're overstepping a bit." [Y/n] said but was ignored.
"I understand that Haru can help you fight back. What can the Fire Nation do to you that they haven't done already?" Katara continued.
They could take Haru away, like they took his father." Haru's mother said, and Haru looked away.
Later, they were led to a shed behind Haru's family's house. "My mom said you can sleep here tonight. But you should leave in the morning." Haru said.
"Thanks. I'll make sure Appa doesn't eat all your hay." Aang said, and they looked over at Appa already eating. [Y/n] giggled. As much as [Y/n] wanted to be annoyed, Appa was too cute.
[Y/n] decided to get settled in. She took Appa's saddle and reins off so he could relax. [Y/n] glanced over at Sokka, catching him looking at her. The ns she sighed. This is going to be a long night.
~~
"It was so brave of Haru to us his Earthbending to help that old man." Katara said. She had came back from her adventure with Haru, near the mines.
As much as [Y/n] wanted to enjoy her story. She was really on edge, seeing that the Fire Nation was here.
"You must have really inspired him." Aang said, and Katara smiled. "I guess so."
"Everyone should get some sleep. We're leaving at dawn." Sokka said.
"Dawn? Can't we sleep in for once?" Katara questioned.
"Absolutely not!" Sokka said, "This village is crawling with Fire Nation troops. If they discover that Aang or [Y/n] are here, we'll be eating fireballs for breakfast, Goodnight."
"I'd rather eat fireballs than nuts." Katara mocked.
"Goodnight." Sokka said, and the others giggled.
That night, Fire Troops came in the middle of the night to arrest Haru, and that morning, Katara heard what happened.
"They took him!" She came, storming in, "They took Haru away!"
"What?" Aang questioned.
"Oh no." [Y/n] muttered.
"That old man turned him into the Fire Nation. It's all my fault. I forced him into Earthbending." Katara continued.
"Slow down, Katara. When did this happen?" Sokka asked, holding Katara's hand to comfort her.
"Haru's mother said they came for him at midnight." Katara explained.
"Then it's too late to track him." Sokka said, "He's long gone."
"We don't need to track him." Katara said, "The Fire Nation is going to take me right to Haru."
"And how is that?" [Y/n] questioned with a confused look.
"Because they're going to arrest me for Earthbending." She finished.
~~
Sokka and Katara pushed a boulder towards an air vent outside of the mines. [Y/n] sat with a confused look.
"Why not let me Earthbend from behind the rock, and Katara could pretend she's doing it?" [Y/n] questioned, "It seems a lot easier."
Katara, Sokka, and Aang looked at [Y/n] like she was speaking nonsense. "So, you're telling me you could Earthbend this whole time?" Sokka questioned while [Y/n] fumbled with her bracelet nervously.
"I told you that I don't like using the bending I learned in the Fire Nation." [Y/n] muttered.
"Can you Airbend, too?" Aang asked with excitement.
"I cannot." [Y/n] said, "I never learned since you're... you know..." She didn't want to remind him that he was the last of his kind.
"Here they come. Get in your places." Sokka warned, "Do your bending, but stay hidden." He said to [Y/n], who nodded.
Aang and [Y/n] hid behind a large rock while Katara and Sokka pretended to fight with each other in front of the Fire Troops.
"I'll show you who's boss! Earthbending style!"
[Y/n] took form and created a large pillar of rock that shock out of the ground, barely missing Sokka.
"Hey!" Sokka glanced back at [Y/n], who mouthed a sorry. "I'll hold her." Sokka continued his act and held Katara then whispered that her team will be right behind her.
[Y/n] had to try her best to stay out of sight from the Fire Troops. Her face was plastered everywhere in the Fire Nation, and she doubted that she would go unrecognized in this settlement.
But, to see the Fire Nation doing things like this. The nation that she was taught was the best in the world was doing such cruel thing and made such prejudice remark of Earthbender broke her heart.
