Chapter 24
Zuko marched into Iroh's prison chambers and slammed the door. The prince had spent all day searching for the answers of his family history.
"You sent this, didn't you?" Zuko questioned, "I found the secret history, which should be renamed, 'the history most people already know.' The note said that I needed to know about my great-grandfather's death. But he was still alive in the end."
"No, he wasn't."
Zuko looked at Iroh in shock. "What are you talking about?"
"You have more than one great-grandfather, Prince Zuko." Iroh said, "Sozin was your father's grandfather. Your mother's grandfather was Avatar Roku."
Zuko's eyes widened even more. "Why are you telling me this?!"
"Because understanding the struggle between your two great-grandfathers can help you better understands the battle within yourself." Zuko fell to his knees, "Evil and Good are always at war inside you, Zuko. It is your nature, your legacy. But there is a bright side. What happened generations ago can be resolved now. By you. Because of your legacy, you alone can cleanse the sins of our family and the Fire Nation. Born in you, along with all this strife is the power to restore balance to the world."
Iroh pulled a brick out of the wall in his cell. "This is a royal artifact. It's supposed to be wore by the crowned prince." He said, and Zuko stood up, taking the crown.
Meanwhile with team Avatar, Aang had finished telling the history about Sozin and Roku that he just witnessed with Roku's spirit.
[Y/n] was the most shocked. Everything that was taught to her in school. Everything in the Fire Nation history books were a lie. "You mean, after all Roku and Sozin went through together, even after Roku showed him mercy, Sozin betrayed him like that?"
"It's like these people were born bad." Toph said, and [Y/n]'s eyes saddened.
"No, that's wrong." Aang said, "I don't think that was the point of what Roku showed me at all."
"Then what was the point?" Sokka questioned.
"Roku was just as much Fire Nation as Sozin was, right?" Aang questioned, "If anything, their story proves anyone's capable of great good and great evil. Everyone, even the Fire Lord and the Fire Nation have to be treated like they're worth giving a chance. And I also think it was about friendships."
"Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?" Toph questioned looking with her head hanging low.
Aang held her hand, and [Y/n] placed her hand on Toph's head.
"I don't see why not." Aang said. Katara took [Y/n]'s hand which took her by surprise.
"Well, scientifically speaking, there's no way to prove that-
"Oh Sokka, just hold hands." Katara said, and Sokka held her hand. [Y/n] smiled a bit more as they looked out over the horizon.

After a couple of days of traveling, the team decided to set up camp in the forest, telling ghost stories to each other.
"Suddenly, they heard something down the hall, in the dark. Oohh... It came into the torchlight, and they knew the blade of wing-fun was haunted." Sokka said while making screeching noises.
The others looked at him with a blank look. "I think I liked 'The Man with a Sword for a Hand' better." Aang said.
"Water Tribe slumber parties must stink." Toph said. 'I don't think I've been to a slumber party.' [Y/n] thought.
"No, wait, I've got one." Katara said, "And this is a true Southern Water Tribe story."
"Is this one of those 'a friend of my cousin knew some guy that this happened to' story?" Sokk asked while sitting down.
"No, it happened to Mom." Katara said, and Sokka gave her a look while Aang sat up, "One winter, when Mom was a girl, a snowstorm buried the whole village for weeks. A month later, Mom realized she hadn't seen her friend Nini since the storm. So, Mom and some others went to check on Nini's family. When they go there, no one was home. Just a fire flickering in the fireplace. When the men went out to search, Mom stayed in the house. When she was alone, she heard a voice. 'It's so cold, and I can't get warm.'" Katara's voice changed, freaking Sokka out a bit.
"Mom turned and saw Nini standing by the fire. She was blue like she was frozen. Mom ran outside for help, but when everyone came back, Nini was gone."
Aang hid behind Momo's ears while Sokka hid behind a tree. "Where'd she go?" Sokka asked.
"Nini's house stands empty to this day. But sometimes, people see smoke coming up from the chimney. Like little Nini is still trying to help warm."
Toph suddenly gasped, "Wait. Guys, did you hear that?!" Aang and Sokka hugged Katara, scared, "I hear people under the mountain, and they're screaming."
[Y/n] closed her eyes and tried to concentrate.
"Pft, nice try."
"No, I'm serious, I hear something." Toph said.
It was faint, but [Y/n] could hear something going on deep below them. "I hear it, too."
"You're both probably just jumpy from the ghost stories." Katara said.
"I have sat in a war room with Fire Lord Ozai and Fire Lord Azulon. I'm quite sure I'm not jumpy from stories." [Y/n] said.
"It just stopped." Toph said.
"All right, now I'm getting scared." Aang said.
"Hello, children." A woman's voice was heard, making everyone scream and hugged around Toph, "Sorry to frighten you, my name is Hama. You children shouldn't be in the forest by yourselves at night. I have an inn nearby, why don't you come back there for some spiced tea and warm beds?"
"Yes, please." Sokka said.
The kids followed the woman back to her inn, and she poured them all some tea. "Thanks for letting us stay here tonight." Katara said.
"Yes, you have a lovely inn." [Y/n] chimed in with a smile.
"Well, aren't you sweet." Hama said, giving [Y/n] a side-glance. "You know, you should be careful. People have been disappearing in those woods you were camping in."
"What do you mean, disappearing? Sokka questioned.
"When the moon turns full, people walk in, and they don't have out." Hama said in a dark tone then she brightened up, "Who wants more tea?"
The children just stared at her. "Don't worry, you'll all be completely safe here." Hama said, "Why don't I show you to your rooms, and you can get a good night's rest?"
The next morning, Hama took team Avatar shopping in town. While walking in town, [Y/n], Sokka, Aang and Toph overheard two villagers talk about the full moon that was happening tomorrow. "People disappearing in the woods, weird stuff during full moons, this just reeks of Spirit World shenanigans." Sokka said.
"I bet if we take a little walk around town, we'll find out what these people did to the environment to make the spirits mad." Aang said.
"And then you can sew up this little mystery, lickety-split, Avatar-style." Sokka said.
"Helping people, that's what I do." Aang said.
"Why don't you all take those things back to the inn?" Hama said, "I just have to run a couple more errands. I'll be back in a little while."
This is a mysterious little town you have here." Sokka said, walking closer to the old lady.
"Mysterious town for mysterious children." Hama said and walked away.
Once they got back to the inn, the team set the items down. "That Hama seems a little strange." Sokka said, "That she knows something or she's hiding something."
[Y/n] nodded in agreement. "She gives me odd looks. Do you think she knows who I am?"
"That's ridiculous." Katara said, "She's a nice woman who took us in and gave us a place to stay. She kind of reminds me of Gran-Gran."
"But what did she mean by 'mysterious children'?" Sokka questioned.
"Gee, I don't know. Maybe because she found five strange kids camping in the woods at night? Isn't that a little mysterious?" Katara questioned, putting her hands on her hips.
"I'm gonna take a look around." Sokka said and walked away to investigate. He started to walk upstairs to Hama's room.
"Sokka, Sokka, what are you doing? You can't just snoop around someone's house." Katara said.
"I agree with Katara." [Y/n] said as they chased after Sokka.
"It'll be fine." Sokka said and opened a door to a random room.
"She could be home any minute." Aang said.
"Sokka, you're gonna get us all in trouble." Katara said, "And this is just plan rude."
"I'm not finished yet." Sokka said and tried to open a closet door, but it wouldn't open. "Come on.." He pulled harder, and puppets fell out, scaring everyone.
"Okay, that's pretty creepy." Aang said.
"So, she's got a hobby." Katara said, and closed the door, "There's nothing weird about that. Sokka, you've looked enough."
Sokka walked up to the attic. "Hama will be back soon." [Y/n] said.
"Just an ordinary, puppet-loving innkeeper, huh? Then why does she have a locked door up here?"
"Probably to keep people like you from snooping through her stuff."
"We'll see." Sokka said and looked through the hole in the door, "It's empty except for a little chest."
Toph gasped, "Maybe it's treasure." Sokka grinned.
"Sokka, what are you doing?" Katara asked watching Sokka grab his sword. He tried to unlock to door, "You're breaking into a private room."
"I have to see what's in there." Sokka said.
"No, you don't." [Y/n] said with the huff. Then the door opened. Sokka grabbed the box.
"We shouldn't be doing this." Aang said as Sokka tried to open the box, but it was locked. "Maybe there's a key here somewhere."
"Oh, hand it over." Toph said. She used her mental bracelet and bended it into a key then tried to unlock the box.
"Come on, come on." Sokka urged her.
"This isn't as easy as it looks." Toph said while the other gathered around to look.
"Guys, I don't know about this." Aang said.
"This isn't right." [Y/n] muttered. "This is crazy, I'm leaving." Katara said.
"Suit yourself, do it, Toph." Sokka said, and it unlocked. The other pushed each other out of way to see what was in the box while [Y/n] to behind then with her arms crossed.
"I'll tell you what's in the box." Hama was back, making everyone jump in freight. The kids looked down in shame while Sokka handed the box over to Hama.
The old woman pulled out an old water tribe style comb. "An old comb?" Sokka questioned.
"It's my greatest treasure." The woman said, "It's the last thing I owned from growing up in the Southern Water Tribe."
Katara and Sokka's eyes widened in shock. "You're from the Souther Water Tribe?" Katara questioned.
"Just like you."
"How did you know?"
"I heard you talking around your campfire. "Hama said, and [Y/n]'s eyes widened a bit.
"But why didn't you tell us?" Sokka questioned.
"I wanted to surprise you. I bought all this food today so I could fix you a big, water tribe dinner." Hama explained, "Of course, I can't get all the ingredients I need here, but ocean kumquats are a lot like sea prunes, if you stew them long enough."
Aang looked in disgust. "I knew I felt a bond with you right away." Katara said.
"And I knew you were keeping a secret. So, I guess we're both right." Sokka said, and Katara punched him, "But I'm sorry we were sneaking around."
"Apology accepted." Hama said with a smile, "Now, let's get cooking."
Later that night, it was time for dinner. "Who wants five-flavor soup?" Hama asked, and everyone raised their hands.
Hama used her waterbending abilities to serve the soup. Katara grew excited, "You're a Waterbender. I've never met another Waterbender from our tribe." She said.
"That's because the Fire Nation wiped them all out. I was the last one." Hama said, and [Y/n] eyes saddened.
"So how did you end up out here?" Sokka asked.
"I was stolen from my home." Hama answered, "I was over 60 years ago when the raids started. They came again and again. Each time, rounding up more of our Waterbenders and taking them captive. We did our best to hold them off, but our number dwindled as the raids continued. Finally, I, too, was captured. I was led away in chains. The last Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe."
Katara stood up and placed her hand on Hama's shoulder, comforting her while the elder continued to tell her story, "They put us in terrible prisons here in the Fire Nation. I was the only one who managed to escape."
"How did you get away?" Sokka asked, "Why did you stay in the Fire Nation."
"I'm sorry. It's too painful to talk about anymore."
"We completely understand." Katara said, "We lost our mother in a raid."
"Oh, you poor things." Hama cooed. Ther others looked down.
"I..." [Y/n] muttered, "I need fresh air. Please excuse me." She stood and walked out of the inn.
It was hard to hear story of people being held captive and families being ripped apart. All of the bad that the Fire Nation has done. [Y/n] always had to remind herself that it wasn't her fault. She wasn't the reason the Fire Nation is considered evil.
But, she was a Firebender.
She would be hated when people find out that she's a Firebender from the Fire Nation.
It was like a heavy load weighing on her shoulders. Like no matter how much good she goes it will never make up for what the Fire Nation has done.
"[Y/n]...?"
[Y/n] turned to see Sokka and Toph, coming out of the inn after her. "Are you okay?" Sokka asked.
"I'm fine..." [Y/n] muttered.
"It sounds like you're about to cry." Toph said, walking closer to [Y/n], giving her a hug. [Y/n] patted Toph's head.
"It's just hard..." [Y/n] muttered, her voice creaking, "Hearing the horrible things my people have done. You may not want to see it, but I am a Firebender. I am Fire Nation. I try not to think about or pay attention to the hurtful things people say. They are well within their right to grieve and be angry about what Fire Nation is doing, but it still hurts." Tears rolled down [Y/n]'s face.
Sokka's eyes saddened, and he hugged her as well.
~~
The next night, Katara went to train with Hama while Aang, Sokka and Toph went to discover what Spirit was abducting people.
[Y/n] wasn't feeling up to being in the Fire Nation town, so she decided to investigate in the forest on her own. She wanted to find out if the screams her and Toph were hearing was really their imagination.
[Y/n] looked up seeing the full moon in the sky when suddenly she felt a pain in her limps. Her body began to move on its own. She couldn't move; she couldn't bend.
[Y/n] was scared. Terrified even. There were stories of something like this happening years ago floating around the palace.
There was a Waterbending prisoner who escaped by bending the blood in the guard's body.
That must have been Hama.
[Y/n] was led to a cave. She could hear the screaming villagers below her.
Meanwhile, With Aang, Toph, and Sokka, they met with Old Man Ding to gather more info on the spirit taking villagers.
"Why would a spirit want to take people to a mountain?" Sokka questioned.
"Oh, no!" Toph said, "I did hear people screaming under the mountain. The missing villagers must still be there."
They looked up at the mountain. Then Aang realized. "[Y/n] said she was going up the mountain." He said.
"Let's go!" Sokka said, and they went running to the mountain.
"I can hear them, they're this way." Toph said and led the way. They eventually made it to the cave. "This is the place."
"I can't see anything down there." Sokka said.
"That's why you have me." Toph said, "Let's go!" They jumped down into the cave then bend the metal door open.
They ran down the hall to the center of the cave to see Fire Nation villagers chained up.
"We're saved." One man said.
"I didn't know that spirits made prisons like this, who brought you here?" Aang said.
"Aang! Toph! Sokka!" They could see [Y/n] chained up in the back.
"[Y/n]?!"
"It was Hama. She uses bloodbending to bring people here." [Y/n] quickly explained while Toph freed her from her chains.
"Hama." Sokka said through his teeth, "I knew there was something creepy about her."
"We have to stop Hama." Aang said.
"I'll get these people out of here, you go." Toph said.
"I'll help Toph." [Y/n] said while the boys rushed off. Once all of the villagers were freed, [Y/n] and Toph rushed to rejoin their group.
[Y/n] ran ahead, hearing the commotion of the fight. "Don't hurt your friends, Katara. And don't let them hurt each other." Hama said, and Aang and Sokka's bodies were launched towards each other with Sokka's sword pointed out Aang.
"No!" Katara yelled, and Aang and Sokka suddenly stopped. Hama was brought to her knees. [Y/n] stood behind her with tears in her eyes. She hated this form of bending with everything in her being.
"You..." Hama growled, trying to stand, "You're not a normal Firebender... YOU'RE THE REASON MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS WERE HELD CAPTIVE!! The Fire Lord's little project to destroy the world! You have no right to use our art of waterbending!"
[Y/n]'s eyes widened, breaking her concentration. Hama stood up, turning to [Y/n] but Katara held Hama down with bloodbending.
Toph and the other villager caught up with the group, and they arrested Hama. "You're going to be locked away forever."
"My work is done." Hama said and looked back at Katara, "Congratulations, Katara. You're a bloodbender." She laughed while Katara cried and fell to her knees.
