You Stole Your Sister's Mate
It was Monday morning. Lilah was preparing for work when she realized she hadn’t seen her dad that morning.
“Where is Dad?”
“He went out early this morning. Probably to visit an old friend. I do not know.” Benita replied to her daughter before preparing for the restaurant.
Meanwhile, Rafael ventured into a tall skyscraper. It was the head office of Jordan Company, one of the best oil-producing companies in the country. Heading over to the receptionist, Rafael gently tapped on her desk.
The lady looked up at him with a dashing smile. She had green hazel eyes and light blonde hair.
“Hello, Miss Rose. Is your boss in?” he muttered to the pretty receptionist as a smile spread across her oval face.
“Yes sir. Do you have an appointment with him?”
“No, but I just need to glimpse him.”
“Okay then. You can go into the last office on your right,” she instructed.
“Thanks.” Rafael blinked an eye at her and she blushed. Rose knew who he was. She was also wolf-blood.
Jordan company is mainly a werewolf company but not everyone knows. Conan’s father, Remi, found it in 1859. He managed it well before passing on, ten years ago. Only the wolf-bloods knew Remi’s actual age. And Rafael was lucky to be close to such a prominent person.
Knocking on the CEO’s door, Rafael waited for his response.
“Come in.” A deep voice invited from the office.
Rafael stepped in, closing the door from behind.
“Hello father-in-law.” Conan dropped the file in his hand. “Please take a seat.” He gestured to Mr. Wulfric to sit on one of the seats in front of his desk. “What a pleasant surprise to see you this morning.”
Feeling welcomed, a pleasant smile spread across Rafael’s lips as he took a seat.
“Oh, Conan. It’s been a while.” Rafael started.
“Yes, I’ve been so occupied lately,” Conan explained. “How’s the family and business?”
“Fine, thank you. But... You know, I’m a man of integrity.” Rafael replied smiling with a serious face. “Something has been bothering me. As you know, I’m highly respected in our territory.”
“Yes, sir.” Conan nodded in understanding
“I know I’m not wealthy enough, but I’m blessed with a happy home and I am well respected. I want nothing that would spoil the home and integrity that I suffered to build.”
Conan focused more on Rafael’s words, yet he was patient enough to listen.
“Do you understand?”
“Of course.” He nodded in agreement.
“Good. I’ve always known you to be a very responsible man. To be ahonhonoreda of our pack by the moon goddesses is a rare blessing. You are industrious and financially buoyant in this territory, which is an admirable thing. People know you don’t soil your hands and there are certain things you don’t get involved in. How long have you met my daughter now?”
“It's been sixteen years.”
“Sixteen years. Even after you found your mate, you still waited. I guess it’s for Asena’s sake.” Rafael pointed out, focusing on Conan. “That’s why I am proud of you as the beta of our pack and my soon-to-be son-in-law. I endorsed your relationship with my daughter but I am highly disappointed in you and Lilah.”
Conan’s smirk faded. “Why, sir?”
“Our elders say that the room that you know that you’ll enter, there’s no need breaking its door. I know you are my daughter’s mate and I know you wanted to marry Lilah, but postponed it till after her late sister’s wedding. But the patient's dog eats the fattest bone. You have been patient all this while. And you should have been more patient. Get married to Lilah and do whatever you want with her. She’s you, mate, after all, nobody can drag that with you. The reason for this visit is to ask you, why do you get Lilah pregnant?”
Conan’s eyebrows pulled together in unison.
“You want to disgrace me.”
Conan was also startled at Mr. Wulfric’s actions. “My mate, pregnant? No... You know I can’t do a thing like that.” he defended.
“Don’t start!” Rafael snapped. “Don’t just pretend, even a blind man would guess it right. You are Lilah’s mate. You got her pregnant.”
“I’m sorry, I don't know how this would sound, but no... Lilah can’t be pregnant. My mate cannot be pregnant.”
“Conan, are you denying it? Do you mean Lilah is not pregnant? Then I’m lying?” He pulled closer with earnest eyes.
“No.. it-”
“You are the only guy in the world I know with my daughter.” Rafael intervened. “The entire world knows that she’s your mate and both of you are dating. The board of Blue Moon wolf pack members can testify to your relationship. Even wolves from other territories know you have a mate.”
“Yes, but we agreed. It’s our mutual agreement not to go into sex until after marriage.” Conan pointed out. And Rafael saw the innocence in his words. “It’s been a platonic relationship, Mr. Wulfric, and we sealed it with the ring on our last fingers. Lilah can’t be pregnant. Maybe she’s having a fever because of the recent incident.”
Rafael frowned, wondering how possible. Conan knows nothing about this. He sat properly, turning sideways to ponder clearly.
“You can ask Lilah, she would never lie. We vowed to keep ourselves until after marriage.” Conan admitted.
“You mean Lilah is not pregnant...” Rafael realized she might be pregnant for someone else. “Okay then, I shall be on my way,” he muttered with disappointment in his voice.
The worry on his face increased by the moment. It did not settle Rafael. ‘How possible would Lilah be seeing someone else without him knowing? This is shameful, indeed.’
“Okay then. I’ll see you later.” Rafael muttered before stepping out of the company.
After he left, Lilah stopped at the front of the building, walking into her office. She did not know that her dad had visited Conan that morning. And Conan, as confused as he was, didn’t bother to ask his mate. ‘Probably Mr. Wulfric was just confused.’ he concluded.
Later that evening, when Lilah got home, she threw her bag on the bed, tired and relaxed. Just then, her dad walked directly into Lilah’s room and pushed down her room’s door with one violent kick.
Lilah jumped out of bed.
“Dad, is everything alright?” Her heart rate increased at his attitude. He was staring at her with boiling anger and fury. Lilah had never seen her dad in that mood before.
“I should ask you that question... Your mate said you’re not pregnant! Conan said he has never slept with you. That was what your mate told me!” He spat, his brows furrowing.
She felt a lump in her throat as she swallowed it down. “Dad... I.. I can explain.” Lilah tottered.
“Lilah, you mean Conan isn’t responsible for your pregnancy? Don’t tell me you got pregnant for one useless human knowing fully well whom the moon goddess has chosen to be your mate!”
“Oh, my goodness... So you eloped with a human?” Benita’s blue eyes startled at her daughter’s.
“No, mum... I wouldn’t do that.”
“So what happened? What did you do? How did you get pregnant? I thought it was Conan.” Tears filled up Benita’s eyes as her eyes widened.
Lilah dropped to her knees and a flood of tears busted out of her eyes at once. “Mum, please... I’m sorry.”
“Don’t beg me, Lilah... Just tell me already. Who did this to you?!”
“I’m... I’m truly sorry.” A gust of wind whooshed out of her trembling lips as she sniffed constantly. Resisting the tears.
“Listen to me, Lilah. I’m your dad, but you don’t know me well. I’m patient with you right now because you’re just entering from office. If in the next 30 seconds, you don’t tell me who got you pregnant, I’ll hand you over to the police!” he threatened.
“Lilah, you know your father. Who got you pregnant?”
“It’s... It’s...” She rubbed her sweaty palms together, pleading. But she quivered, like that of a convulsing child.
“Who?!”
“A... Sher.” Her shivering voice whispered.
“Huh?” They turned to her with furrowed brows, trying to understand the puzzle.
“It’s... Asher Rhys,” she muttered, a little clearer.
“Which Asher Rhys? Wait, I don’t understand.” Benita clarified. “Let me get you well. Is it our pack leader, your late sister's husband?”
Rafael and Benita panicked, with an angry outburst.
“It was a mistake... I. I did not know he drugged the drink.” Lilah gasped frequently, covering her mouth with her sweaty, shivering hands. “I woke up next to him on a bed that morning. I still don’t know how it happened.”
“Ah! So you finally put me to shame!” Rafael shouted out to his daughter with bitterness in his voice. “And you say it was a mistake.”
“Mother... Father, please. I’m s...sorry.”
“Just shut up! Shut the hell up before I raise my hand on you!”
“Benny.... Come and look at her!” Rafael pointed to his wife. “You failed to do your job! You were waiting for me to do your job. Train your daughter properly, you didn’t. Now you’ve dragged our family name into the mud. I’m still a responsible man, there’s no problem! You slept with a man who is your late sister’s would-be husband. No problem... Lilah, no problem!”
She turned to her dad, wiping off the tears as more tears poured out of her eyes.
“Has this ever happened in our history? Just get ready to marry him because you know the rules.” He hissed at her in fury, leaving her with her mother.
“Mum, please believe me. I didn’t mean for this to happen. Mummy, we were drunk.” Tears spilt over Lilah’s eyes as her shoulders dropped in resignation. She swallowed the salty tears to make her mum understand.
“What did you just say?” Benita pulled forward, dumbfounded. “You were drunk? Just listen to yourself! Who sent you to his house to drink? You know the entire pack would eventually hear of this and make a judgment. As if working with him wasn’t enough. You stole your sister’s mate.”
