Stories About Mom

Note: Sequel to Missing Mom. Everyone may be OOC. Italics will be used for flashbacks.

That night, DJ went into Stephanie and Michelle's room. She smiled, remembering the days when she had shared that room with Stephanie.

Stephanie was telling Michelle about the time Michelle had hidden Mr. Bear, Stephanie's stuffed bear, as a toddler. Michelle couldn't stop giggling.

'Hey, Michelle,' said DJ. 'Ready to hear a story about Mom?'

Michelle eagerly went into bed. 'Ready!' she said.

'Alright,' said DJ. 'Once when I was in second grade, I was going to participate in the school concert and was quite nervous about it.'

Flashback:

DJ just laid in bed, thinking about the concert. Why on earth did she agree to sing in the school concert? She must have been temporarily insane.

Just then, she heard a knock on the door. 'DJ, can I come in?' came a voice.

DJ sighed. 'Yes,' she said.

The door opened to reveal a woman with shoulder length blond hair and brown eyes. She sighed at DJ's state.

'Thinking about something, darling?' she asked.

'Mommy, I don't think that I can sing at the school concert.'

'What? But your father, sister and I had been looking forward to seeing you performing.'

'But what if I mess up? I have never performed before.'

Pamela Tanner smiled. 'You know, you remind me of my brother.'

DJ sat upright at once. 'What? Uncle Jesse? I don't believe it!'

'Well, it's true. He was really nervous about his first performance and was worried about messing up. But on the day he performed, he did it smoothly.'

DJ giggled. It seemed funny to her to think of Jesse being nervous. 'You know, I actually feel better about my performance.'

'Well, you'll have your family watching you do your best.'

'Thanks Mommy.'

Present time:

'Uncle Jesse being nervous?' asked Michelle. 'That is something I would like to see.'

'Alright, my turn,' said Stephanie. 'When you were born, Mom decided to show me how difficult taking care of a baby is. And oh boy, you definitely didn't make it easy.'

Flashback:

Pamela placed baby Michelle into her crib. 'Finally,' she said.

Stephanie peeked in the nursery. 'Mommy, will you play with me?'

'Soon, Stephanie,' said Pamela. 'Mommy's got to put your baby sister down for a nap.'

Just then, an idea came to Pamela. 'I know. How about I'll teach you how to take care of Michelle tomorrow?'

Stephanie nodded eagerly. 'Sure,' she said. She happily hopped back to her room.

The next day, Stephanie, Pamela and Michelle were alone in the house. DJ was at a Honeybee meeting and Danny was at work.

Pamela prepared a bottle for Michelle. 'First, I'll teach you how to feed Michelle. You need to let her lie on your lap and place one arm under her head so that it won't get sore. Be gentle as babies are very delicate.'

Stephanie was pleased that feeding Michelle was very easy. But she wasn't very pleased when a nasty smell suddenly emerged.

'How rude! What's that awful smell?'

'That's her diaper,' said Pamela. 'Looks like we are going to have to change her diaper now.'

Pamela changed Michelle's diaper herself as she didn't really trust anyone else with the job. Stephanie watched her do it.

For the next three hours, Stephanie was taught how to bath Michelle, change her clothes, and clean her after a meal.

Stephanie was thankful when Michelle had been put to bed. 'Thank goodness,' she said. 'Taking care of a baby is not easy.'

'I know,' said Pamela.

Just then, Michelle's cries were heard from the baby monitor.

'Great. What does Michelle want now?'

Present Day:

'Wow. I must have been one fussy baby,' said Michelle.

Stephanie chuckled. 'Yes you were. By the way, you should have seen Uncle Jesse and Joey change your diaper for the first time. They used a paper towel and a plastic bag.'

'What was your last memory of Mommy?' asked Michelle.

Immediately DJ and Stephanie grew somber. 'Well, it was the day she died,' said DJ. 'It started out as a normal day. We went to school and Dad went to work. If only we knew that it was the last time we would be seeing her...'

Flashback:

DJ and Stephanie quickly raced down the stairs. Danny was waiting for them.

'Ready for an awesome day at school?' he asked.

'Yeah,' said Stephanie. 'I can't believe that I only have one month left at preschool. What if I make a fool of myself in kindergarten?'

Pamela came downstairs carrying Michelle. 'Trust me, you won't,' she said. 'If I were you, I would be focused on enjoying your remaining days at preschool.'

'We should be going now,' said DJ. 'Bye Mom.'

'Bye Mommy!' said Stephanie.

'Bye Pam,' said Danny.

'Bye guys. See you later,' said Pamela.

Danny expected to come home to the smell of Pamela's cooking. But to his surprise, he saw his mother playing with the three girls.

'Mom? What are you doing here?' he asked.

'Oh, Pam needed to go to the grocery store to pick up a few things, so she asked me to look after the girls until she came back.'

Danny shrugged. 'Alright,' he said.

Two hours passed. Still no sign of Pamela. Everyone was starting to get worried.

'Dad, why isn't Mom home yet?' asked DJ.

'Maybe there's traffic,' suggested Danny.

'Daddy, I'm scared. What if something has happened to Mommy?' asked Stephanie.

'Don't be so negative, Steph,' said DJ. 'I'm sure that there is a reasonable explanation for this.'

Sadly, however, Stephanie was proved right! For ten minutes later, the doorbell rang and it was revealed to be a police officer. 'Is this the Tanner residence?' he asked.

'Yes,' said Danny. 'Is something the matter?'

The officer and Danny had a private conversation in the garage. While bursting with curiosity, DJ and Stephanie did not dare eavesdrop.

Soon, the police officer left and Danny had a chat with his two oldest daughters. 'Girls, I have some bad news to share with the both of you. Can you be brave?'

However, no amount of bravery could have prepared DJ and Stephanie to hear the words, 'Your mother is dead.' They couldn't stop crying that night.

In the days that followed, the whole house was filled with grief. Danny's mother stayed to help out with the girls. DJ's friend Kimmy Gibbler tried to comfort her the best she could. Stephanie refused to talk to anyone except Mr. Bear. Danny did not enjoy ringing up Jesse to tell him of the news.

The funeral was depressing. Everyone was saddened to hear of Pamela's death and there was a lot of crying involved. The worst part was that DJ and Stephanie could not remember a single thing that happened at the funeral other than seeing their mother's corpse and saying goodbye. They didn't want to stay for the burial, so their grandma took them and Michelle home early.

Present Day:

'That's a really sad story,' said Michelle. 'I wish that I remembered it.'

'Michelle, you were only six months old,' said DJ. 'There was no way you could have remembered.'

'But the most important thing is that we keep our memories of Mom alive,' said Stephanie.

Suddenly, Michelle's eyes lit up. 'I know what we can do for Mother's Day.'

'What?' asked her sisters.

'We can write a letter to Mommy and leave it on her grave on Mother's Day,' said Michelle. 'We can write about how much we appreciate her and how grateful we are to have her in our lives, even if our time together was cut short.'

'I like it,' said Stephanie.

'Me too,' said DJ. 'But Michelle should probably be sleeping now.'

Michelle quickly nestled into bed and closed her eyes. DJ and Stephanie quietly switched off the lights, said goodnight to Michelle, and went out of the room.
