Chapter 2

Kathleen is fed up with constantly losing the opportunity to win huge amounts of money at the Junior Lottery. (Basically, the Junior Lottery is like the ordinary lottery, but is for under 18s) She decides it is high time to try again, even though her older brother advises her not to play with Fate, because it might be very dangerous. But she chooses to ignore his advice: who would listen to him, after all?

Also, she earns very little from her part-time job, let's say she often literally works for free, which flusters her and preclude her from going shopping, like many other girls do. Caycie and Livvy have invited her round to the mall, but she is forced to deny the invitation, not only for her little savings, but also for her relatively little pocket money her parents gave her this morning, nor she has a credit card yet.

So, her very last chance to have more money comes from winning the lottery: the last time she gambled a scratch-'n'-win, she only won twenty dollars, which her mom immediately took and used to do some shopping, unbeknownst that they were her daughter's.

So, she goes to the local mart and buys a Junior Lottery ticket. Then, instead of going home, she sits on a bench in the park and starts gambling. Choosing the twenty numbers to gamble has become easy for Kathleen: she is used to doing so. She thinks, 'C'mon, Kath, what numbers would you gamble, today?' And picks.

1. 3. 9. 16. 19. 22. 27. 35. 40. 44. 53. 59. 64. 68. 70. 72. 76. 81. 88. 90.

'Interesting choice. I might guess some, if not almost everyone. I hope everything goes well.'

After this thought, Kathleen goes back home.

As she arrives there, she goes to her bedroom, lies on her bed and has some rest for a couple of hours.

2 hours later

"Kathleen! Dinner time."

Her mother's voice, as shrill and annoying as usual, reaches the girl's room. Kathleen is not very fond of having dinner now, since it is almost 8 pm, and, every day, every five minutes, there is the draw of lottery numbers on Channel 711, which is the channel about gambling. Gambling, and nothing else. She checks her ticket, which say: draw no. 100. Since her ticket is about the hundredth draw, she hopes to be lucky enough to guess some numbers, if not win.

The presenter announces the numbers with a very slow pace which rises the tension, other than the pressure on Kathleen.

"1," says the presenter, and Kathleen thinks, 'Good, a guess. But it is better to watch out, because the next one could be wrong.'

But her thought is interrupted by the presenter calling the next number. "3."

'Geez, another one.'

"9."

'Three in a row! What a lucky coincidence!'

"16."

'Am I so lucky? What happened to the unlucky, boring Kathleen?'

"19... 22... 27... 35... 40."

With the numbers being all exact until now, Kathleen feels quite overjoyed, though her mom calls her out, "Kathleen, please eat. There's no time for these idiocies."

"Mom, this isn't an idiocy, it is the lottery drawing. I could win!"

"I don't think so." Kathleen's mom is threatening to make her daughter's enthusiasm disappear, though nothing can destroy it, especially combined with that girl's determination.

Kathleen more wisely chooses to ignore her mother's negative attitude, and focuses back on the lottery. The presenter keeps announcing the numbers. "44... 53... 59... 64."
'Correct again. How lucky I am! But let's see what are the other numbers'
"68"
'That's one of my favorite numbers. It's good I guessed it'
"70"
'Dad predicted it would be drawn again today. I think he was right, it appeared how many times today... let me think... three or four?'
"72... 76... 81... 88"
'All correct.'
Only one number left. There are only two possibilities, according to Kathleen: 89, which she didn't pick, or 90, which she did pick. Kathleen crosses her fingers. 'I may lose just for a number, or win. I am not afraid of challenging Fate. I can do it. I must be able to do it'
After a few endless seconds of suspense, the presenter finally announces the last number. "90"
Kathleen closes her eyes for a minute. Then, she shouts with all the power she has inside her lungs, "Man, I did it!"
Her dad notices this and asks, "What?", but she ignores him and keeps listening to what the presenter is saying. "Whoever wins will win $1,000,000,000 now, $5,000 a month for twenty years, and $500,000 as an extra!"
Kathleen is overjoyed.
She has just become a billionaire.

Despite not understanding what happened with his daughter, Kathleen's dad is taking her to the Prizes Office, which is far away and it takes a long trip overnight to reach it. The two of them don't even have time to pack: they must get their money as soon as possible.
As they arrive, they have their IDs checked, and, after they pass every single control, they can finally get their money. Kathleen's dad puts it in her new bank account and congratulates with her, before the two of them head back home.

2 weeks later

Now, everyone knows that Kathleen and her family have become very rich due to her winning the lottery. And, more importantly, she has also started taking part into upper class' social events. During one of them, today, she hopes to find someone she can tell her story to without being judged. Caycie and Livvy took it sorely and now believe Kathleen has forgotten them.
Nevertheless, she is making new friends. She has met two girls, Madyson and Meredith, whose families have become rich for the same reason she did: winning the lottery. Also, there is a guy, named Shawn, who comes from the richest family in town. He has been fascinated by Kathleen's looks: her long red hair, her bangs, her curves. And also by her intelligence and maturity. So, he reaches her and, without many compliments, proposes to an unaware Kathleen. "Will you marry me?", he asks indeed.
Kathleen cannot say a word. 'What would my parents say if they were with me?'
He is still waiting for her answer.
'Oh, come on, I don't know what Mom would do, but Dad would certainly approve'. So, she finally makes a decision she hopes never to regret. "Yes, I will".
Everyone claps their hands.
