Proof: When Asami was first introduced, Mako immediately began crushing on her. And the feeling was mutual. Asami was Mako's first girlfriend before he started dating Korra. While they did show signs of getting back together in Book 2, it never really went anywhere. Then Korrasami came in and ruined everything.

What I think: This is the pairing I probably would have been the most satisfied with if Korra ended with it. If you're wondering if I ship Korra with anyone, no, I surprisingly don't. We got freaking Korrasami instead of this... But you know what destroys a ship? A canonship! I'm terrible...
