Chapter Nine
I was so nervous about the gala I could barely get anything done. I was seated in my room dressed in my black lace panties and matching bra as I tried to even my breathing. Why was I so nervous? It's not like my-not-yet-boyfriend was meeting my whole family. Oh right they were.
I needed to get calm down and hope for the best. David would be arriving any minute to change into his outfit before us to the event so I needed to get ready.
For the event I had dyed my hair back again into its natural black color. It was naturally curly so I pinned my left said and left the other half to fall over my face. I then put on a pair silver earrings shaped like leaves and and my small silver watch. I grabbed a pair of black four inch heels with straps from my closet and put them on.
Just as I was about to put on my dress the door bell rang. I grabbed my dressing gown from the back of the chair and put it on leaving my dress neatly laid out on the bed. I didn't want it creasing up.
I opened the door to reveal David dressed in his work clothes which was a black T-shirt with the clubs logo on it, black jeans and black combat boots. He had told me that he didn't want to miss work, so he had taken the afternoon shift instead and had come to my place straight after. He looked good but he had to change quickly if we wanted to be on time. I stepped aside to let him in.
"Hey tiny." He greeted kissing my cheek as he passed by me to get into the house.
"Hi David . You're on time." I commented checking my watch.
"I'm always on time unless there's traffic." He replied and I smiled.
"Your outfit and shoes are in the extra bedroom so go get changed and meet me back here. We have to leave soon if we want to make it on time." I explained.
"Are you going dressed like that?" He asked pointing at my outfit choice.
"Of course not. Are you crazy? My mom would kill me! I have a dress." I replied defensively.
"I was joking Tiny. Chill. Now where's that bedroom?"
"Last door down the hall to the right." I replied watching as he walked towards where the bedrooms were.
I followed him and went into my bedroom which was opposite where David was. I quickly finished putting on my make up which consisted of some mascara, eyeliner and matte red lipstick. Putting on my dress I stood infront of the mirror to admire my reflection.
My dress was a long red maxi dress with a peacock feather design and a slit that went up to mid thigh. The top part had a deep plunging neckline that showed an ample amount of cleavage. Feeling good and confident enough about my looks I grabbed my silk wrap in case it got cold later, my black purse which had my phone, keys and some cash before leaving my bedroom.
I ran smack into David who was exiting from the opposite bedroom. He quickly reached out and grabbed me before I fell. He pulled me flush against him and I landed on his chest. He smelled good as always with his intoxicating scent that always left me feeling a little light headed. I looked up at him finding him staring up at me. I quickly broke eye contact and took a step back forcing him to let me go. I was afraid of the look I saw in his eyes. Pure lust. I wanted David to see me more than a body that could warm up his bed. I wanted to see love too in his gaze. Lust wasn't enough for me. I needed more to commit. But would I get it? Only time would tell.
"You look beautiful." He complimented.
"Thank you." I said looking up at him. "You look handsome too."
I wasn't lying. He looked good in the outfit I had specifically made for him. He was wearing black slacks, a matching long sleeved collarless shirt that reached his knees but had slits on both side up to his waist. The shirt had a red strip design on the middle. He had black loafers on with a gold emblem design on the top part. I had gotten him accessories too which included a watch, bracelet, ring and necklace, all in gold. David had pieced ears so I got him a studs that matched his outfit perfectly. He looked handsome and was definitely gonna turn some heads.
"We good to go?" He asked.
"Yeah all set." I replied and he held out his arm for me.
I took it and was grateful for the support. I rarely wore heels and needed the support so I didn't fall.
We walked out and I locked the door behind me. We took the elevator down to the garage. George was on security detail at the event so he wasn't with me. He usually sent someone else to replace him but according to him he now trusted David enough to know that he would take care of me.
"Please tell me we are taking the Toyota Land Cruiser." David asked in a pleading tone.
I liked how he always got excited when he had to drive any of my cars.
"Sure why not?"I replied handing him the keys.
He opened the passenger door for me and made sure I was seated properly considering the length of my dress before he closed it and went around to get in the drivers side.
"You good?" He asked when he got in and put on his seatbelt.
"Yeah let's go. The venue is already input into the cars GPS." I replied and he put the key in the ignition bringing the car to life.
He carefully maneuvered out of the parking lot and soon we were out of the estate and onto the road. It was a thirty minute drive so we would arrive in time to be fashionably late which was allowed.
"So who is invited to this gala?" David asked breaking the comfortable silence.
"Since its a company party. All employees are invited no matter where they work and their families. All the partners of the business, friends, family and basically anyone important enough to invite." I explained.
"Generous of your grandfather to invite all employees."
"Yeah. He always says that everyone is important for the whole company to succeed. Even the security guards have tonight off to join the party. We usually hire a security firm to replace them for tonight and tomorrow."
"Wow. So tell me what to expect from your family and friends."He continued.
"Well the only family I have is my immediate family because my mom is an only child and my dad was an orphan. My grandfather will ask you so many questions so just be honest and always maintain eye contact. My mother is nice but can get over protective but there's nothing to worry about on her side. But if I notice her bothering you too much I'll cut in, she can be quite a handful. My brothers are just nagging so nothing to worry about there. That about covers it." I explained.
"I think I can handle that. That covers family what about friends and business associates?" He asked.
"All my so called friends will try to either hit on you or tease you so be prepared. As for business associates just give them short crypt answers and you'll be okay." I replied.
"Okay final question. Who am I going as to you?" He asked looking at me.
"What do you mean?"
"Are we dating? Friends? Friends with benefits?" He expounded.
I wanted to say dating but that would be lying and honestly just my wishful thinking. I didn't want to force David into anything he wasn't ready for.
"I'm not sure. What do you think?" I asked not quite sure how to answer him.
"Okay I'll make this simple. Tiny aka Anisha will you be my girlfriend?" He asked.
I turned to look at him so fast I almost got a whiplash.
I chocked on my own saliva "What?!"I asked stupidly.
"I asked if you will be my girlfriend." He replied.
"Umh?! Why?" I was so confused.
"What do you mean why?" He asked with a chuckle.
"Are you asking because you actually like me and want me to be your girlfriend or just because of tonight?" I asked wanting to be sure.
I hoped it was the latter. We stopped at a traffic light and he turned to look at me.
"I'm asking because I like you and actually want you to be my girlfriend." He replied and I saw that he was being sincere.
I wanted desperately to say yes but I was so shocked no words would come out of my mouth. I had been desperately waiting for that question since I met David and now that he had asked I was shocked and dumbfounded. I did the only thing I could and nodded. David gave me a bright smile and leaned in to kiss me. It was finally happening. He was going to kiss me. Just as our lips were a breath away a honk rang behind us and we quickly pulled apart. The light was red and we hadn't moved. David quickly reacted and resumed driving. I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek making him smile.
"We can save the better one for later." I told him and he replied by taking my hand and kissing my palm.
David and I were officially a couple and I couldn't be happier.
We arrived at the event venue and found a space in the vast parking lot that had been reserved for me. David came around the drivers side and helped me out of the car. I placed my hand on his arm and held my clutch with the other hand.
He led us to the front of the hired venue grounds and it looked amazing. A few photographers hired by my mom and others from media outlets from around the country were taking pictures by the entrance.
David allowed me to go ahead first and have my picture taken alone as I answered some questions before I called him over and we had our picture taken together.
"Anisha who is your date today?" One of them asked.
I looked up at David with a grin and found him looking at me with a smile on his face.
"He's my special someone." I replied happily.
The cameras went crazy as they loads of photographs. David leaned over and kissed my forehead. I was happy he didn't kiss my lips because I didn't want our first kiss to be publicized. I wanted it to be a special moment between us.
After answering a few more questions like how long we had known each other and what his name was we moved forward. The venue was a beautiful garden decorated with fairly lights and lots of tables arranged all over the available space to fit all the guests. My mom had decided on a garden party because of all the kids around. She didn't want them hurting themselves or breaking anything expensive. They had their own allocated side with food, snacks, a heated pool, swings and everything a kid would dream of. My mom really had gone all out. The adult side had a stage where a band was set up entertaining everyone with some lively songs and a temporary dance floor was set up in front of the stage. There was also an open bar with two bartenders and a table set aside with finger foods. Waiters went around the tables handing out drinks and taking orders.
"Ready to meet the Kwamboka's?" I asked looking at David.
"Of course." He replied and for the first time since I met David he looked nervous.
"Don't worry they'll love you." I assured him squeezing his arm encouragingly as I led him to my family's assigned table.
I knew where it was because we had been using the same venue for years and always used the same table.
"Hello family." I greeted as soon as we got close enough.
They all turned to look at us. My mother's eyes went wide with shock probably because of David's looks, my brothers looked at him in awe due to his build and my grandfather just eyed him curiously.
I went to introduce David but he beat to it. Thankfully he greeted my mom first. Ladies first. Even my grandpa respected that.
"You must be the mom. I've hear a lot about you. You look even prettier in person. I'm David, Tiny's, oh sorry I mean Anisha's boyfriend." He complimented and my mom blushed.
He held out his hand for handshake but my mom got up and pulled him in for a hug instead. David looked surprised for a moment but he hugged her back.
"You are very handsome young man." My mom commented when they pulled apart.
She looked like she was about to cry probably because David was my first official boyfriend. She had been waiting for that moment since I was born and it has finally arrived.
"Thank you ma'am." He replied with a smile that made my mom swoon.
"Please don't call me ma'am. Jessica or Jess will suffice. We will work our way towards mom." She replied and it was David's turn to blush.
"Okay... Jessica." He replied hesitating a little.
My mom nodded at him before she sat back down. David turned to my grandpa and shook his hand.
"Pleasure meeting you Mr. Kwamboka." David said bowing a little.
I saw my grandpa's eyes widen a little before and in that moment I knew that David had won him over.
"So you're the boyfriend huh?" My grandpa asked in his business tone probably to intimidate him but David didn't even flinch.
"Yes sir." He replied.
"I'm glad you could join us today. Grab a seat." My grandpa invited and I knew we were good.
He was practically a member of the family already. David first pulled out my seat for me before sitting next to me earning approving looks from both my mom and grandpa.
My brothers were still staring at him as if they couldn't believe he was real.
"And you boys must be Caleb and Ken. Anisha talks about you all the time." David said addressing them.
They both nodded looking dumbstruck.
"You look like the hulk just without the green." Ken commented making David and I laugh.
"Are those arms real?" Caleb asked eyeing David curiously.
"Yeah wanna feel?" David asked.
"Really?" Caleb asked curiously.
David nodded holding his arm out for him to squeeze. He moved the part Caleb was holding making Ken clap excitedly. Looks like David had won everyone over.
"So David where do you work?" My grandpa asked and the quizzing began.
"I work Security at a club in the city." He explained.
My grandfather looked at me questioningly.
"It's one of Tyler's clubs." I explained.
My grandfather knew Tyler so he nodded in understanding.
"How about schooling?" He asked him and the questioning continued.
I didn't hear his reply because I felt someone tap my shoulder.
I turned and came face to face with Kim. Her family and the twins family were seated on the table next to ours.
"Who's the mountain you came in with?"She asked in an excited whisper.
There was no need to lie because she would find out tomorrow from the news anyway.
"My boyfriend." I replied.
Her eyes went as wide as saucers.
"How can you call yourself my best friend and still hide such details from me?" She asked slapping my arm.
"Stop being so violent and I didn't tell you because I knew how you'd react. Besides we just became official on the way here." I explained.
"Okay fine but you owe me the whole story. Next week drinks with me and the girls. You have to tell us everything." She demanded.
"Okay I promise." Knowing there was no way out.
Contented with my reply Kim turned to her family and I turned back to mine.
They were all talking about business now. I knew David was safe there because of his degree. I was so happy that my family approved of him. It meant a lot to me. The night was just getting better and better. First we became official and then he met my family and they all got along.
"Wanna dance?" David whispered in my ear and I turned to look at him.
I didn't notice their conversation was over having been lost in thought.
"Yeah sure." I replied allowing him to lead me to the dance floor where a slow song was being played by the band.
David put his hands around my waist and I placed mine around his neck as we swayed slowly to the beat keeping eye contact.
"Thanks for agreeing to come tonight." I expressed.
"Anything for my tiny girlfriend." He said with a smile that made me look away shyly.
I was never shy around people but when it came to David it was inevitable.
I laid my head on his chest since that was as far as I could reach and listened to his heartbeat as we continued dancing.
The song came to and end so we pulled apart clapping for the band before the Master of Ceremony took over the stage. There were a lot of speeches before my grandfather was finally called over.
"Thank you for all coming tonight. I don't want to say much because today is about appreciating all of you. I'm a proud boss and business partner to be working with all of you. I especially want to thank my family for being all here tonight and their endless support especially my daughter though she keeps replacing my alcohol with soda." That made everyone laugh. "Anyway eat, dance, drink and enjoy yourselves for tonight it's all about that. Thank you." He said before handing back the microphone to the MC and everyone clapped.
"You heard the boss. Let's eat." The MC announced and the waiters brought out the food.
We were all served and everyone had a good time. The rest of the evening was spent drinking. eating and having fun.
"Thanks for again coming David." My mother thanked him when we got up to leave.
It was past midnight and most guests had already left.
"Thank you for having me." He replied.
We said goodbye to everyone else before heading outside to where we had parked the car.
The drive home was quiet until David spoke.
"Your grandfather invited me to his birthday party next month." He informed me.
"What?! That's a big deal. We only celebrate that as a family." I replied.
"I guess I'm family now." He replied with a wink and a smile making me smile too.
"I guess you are." I said leaning on my seat.
Before I realized it I had drifted off to sleep as everything else faded away.
