6 • The Sleepover

(Seraphina)

After school, I followed Emily to her car. Charlotte followed me, chattering away as usual. I suppose that it's a way to cope with the move to Redmond, Washington from Florida. I knew that I talked as much as she did to deal with my being friendless.

I do wish that she would stop talking, I thought to myself as we got into the car. Shutting my eyes, I pretend to be asleep. I wanted to fall asleep during class, but I couldn't. Emily was quiet as well, focusing on the road.

"My dad and I moved to Redmond, Washington from Jacksonville, Florida. The drive was long, but we made it here. I was placed in the custody of my mom and her husband. I'm not sure where my dad is, but he texts me occasionally. I want to know where he is, but if I try to run away, I might get caught by the police. Living with my mom and her husband is pretty cool. Emily is cool, too. I wish that she wasn't so quiet half the time," says Charlotte, being scatterbrained and forgetting that Emily was in the car.

"Say that one more time about me, and you're walking your ass home," said Emily, looking through the rearview mirror at her little half-sister. Charlotte nodded, smiling a bit and shutting her mouth. Thank goodness. Now I can get some peace from the full school day.

"I was meant to be yours! We were meant to be one! I can't make it alone, finish what we've begun! You were meant to be mine!" I hear as someone turns my alarm on to wake me up. I fell asleep. It was more comfortable to sleep in Emily's car than at home; I will admit that.

We walked into her house, and I gape at the contents. A big living room, painted a light pink, was the first room that you encounter when you enter the house. The pink paint had faded away to the point that you could barely see it. The kitchen was across the hall from the living room with a door leading to the dining room. There was a ledge in between the kitchen and living room, so someone would tell you when dinner was ready or something.

We walked upstairs, and there are five doors. One is their father's study, Emily says, and the other four doors lead to bedrooms. One of the rooms belong to their parents, one of the bedrooms belong to Charlotte, one to Emily, and a guest room. "Your dad is not my dad," says Charlotte as we walk into the guest room.

There's a king size bed, and the walls are painted a light brown color. Navy blue carpets are covering an oak wood plank floor, and there's a private bathroom that you can access by a door. There are a closet and a dresser by the window. There is also a window seat with plain white pillows. The bed set on the bed is a dull gray color with dark gray pillowcases.

"What do you think?" Emily asks me as I plug my phone into the charger and text my parents that I'm at my sleepover. I feel smaller than this room.

"I like it," I say. Emily smiles and tells me to relax before her parents come home. They leave the room, and I sit down on the bed. Shutting my eyes, I run my hand over the soft comforter. I leave the room and walk around the house. The dining room isn't as big as the ones you read about in fairy tales, but it's a fair size. The table is made out of polished oak wood and is set for dinner. I look through the rooms upstairs.

Their parents' bedroom is painted a lavender color and has the same color bed set as the guest room. There is a king size bed and everything. Emily's room and Charlotte's room has the same thing, except for the bed sets and wall color. Charlotte's room has bright pink walls and an equally bright pink bed set. Emily's room has sky blue paint on the walls and her bed set is dark blue. The kitchen is painted white with a black-and-white tiled floor.

The study has a wooden aspen desk and a matching chair. Papers are files into cabinets behind the counter. There are bookshelves, holding books about the law. I can't tell if one or both parents are lawyers or not.

I sit in the living room, feeling like a bump on a log. The half-sisters' parents come home and introduce themselves as Liam and Olivia Bradley. I smile softly, making them smile back. They work as lawyers as they told me as I help them make dinner. Emily comes down and sets the table. Charlotte remains in her bedroom.

During the evening, I sit on Emily's bed as she searches her CD box. The quiet is suddenly too dangerous, and I wish one of us would start talking. Emily asks me if listening to Halsey is okay. I nod.

We listen to Halsey for most of the night, me not wanting to go to sleep alone. Emily doesn't want me to be alone, either, so we stay together. It's around 3 a.m. when we go to sleep because of how exhausted we were. We sleep in until 10:00 a.m. the next morning, and I make us both bowls of oatmeal for breakfast.

Charlotte doesn't come down until lunchtime. She says that she was up all night, playing a game on her computer and she had lost track of time. I get ready to leave, and Emily drives me home. Are we friends?

"Since we know each other a bit more, I was wondering if we could be more than acquaintances," I ask her. She nods. "Can we be friends?"

"Yeah, that would be great. Don't get me wrong, the girls I hang out with are okay, but they get too drunk over the weekend," says Emily as she drops me off. We say "Goodbye" to each other, and she drives away. I walk into the house, smiling to myself.
