Part 17
Woohyun POV
After having supper with her parents, we went back to her place. The next morning as she was getting ready to leave, I whined "Why can't I come with you?"
"I already told you" she sighed. "We don't want to cause a scene like you did last time. What if someone recognizes you? Do you want them to find out?"
"I don't care if they find out" I replied honestly.
"Then what was the point of eloping?" I was shocked into silence. Then she walked over and hugged me. "Don't worry, I'll be back soon."
I didn't want to tell her that I was worried about the guy she works with. I was afraid that he might try and convince her to stay. "Okay" I pouted as I held her tighter. "But hurry back."
Rose POV
I giggled a little because he was acting like a child. I leaned forward and gave him a peck on the lips. "You know, it's nice having someone see you off to work. I could get used to this" I smirked and then rushed out the door.
I quickly made my way to the office and was greeted by a surprised receptionist "I thought you had time off."
"Yeah" I smiled awkwardly. "I just have something I need to take care of first."
"Okay" she smiled. "Have a good day!"
"Thanks!"
I made my way up to the office and was greeted again by surprised faces. "Isn't that Rose? I thought she was taking time off" I heard people whisper as I passed.
I walked over to my boss's office and knocked. "Come in!" he called from inside and I quickly opened the door and entered.
"Hello Mr. Gonzalez!" I greeted him.
"Rose!" he quickly looked up in surprise. "What are you doing back so soon? I thought you were taking a few months off."
I hung my head a bit and sighed. "There is no easy way to say this" I paused a moment before looking up at him. "I'm here to turn in my resignation" I said as I placed an envelope on his desk.
"Resignation?" he was shocked. He quickly opened the envelope and looked at the letter inside. "Why are you resigning? Did you receive a better offer somewhere else?"
"No" I shook my head. "It's noting like that. I'm resigning for personal reasons."
"If it's not because of another job, then maybe we could work something out. Let's talk about this. What is going on?"
"I'm sorry sir, but this is a personal matter. It's not something I feel like discussing. I thought this through before making my decision."
"What are we going to do? I need you! I don't have anyone that can replace you!"
"Yes you do" I replied. "Chris is more than capable of taking my place."
"Chris?"
"Yes" I smiled. "He has really worked hard and has improved a lot over the years. He is ready to to take a lead position."
Mr Gonzalez sighed "You're really not going to change your mind?"
"I'm sorry sir."
"I'm the one who's sorry" he pouted. "I'm losing one of my best employees" he smiled. Then he stood up and walk around his desk to face me. "I'm sorry to see you go, Rose." He held out he hand to me "Good luck with whatever it is you've decided on."
I shook his hand and said "Thanks."
"There are boxes in the store room. You can take your time cleaning out your desk."
"Okay" I smiled sadly before leaving his office. I went to the store room and grabbed a couple of boxes before going over to my desk.
"What's going on?" "What happened?" "Did she get fired?" "Did she quit?" Everyone started whispering when they saw what was happening. I can't blame them though. It is kind of unexpected.
Chris POV
"Rose!" June called out to her sadly before rushing over and hugging her.
"Hi June" she smiled back.
"What's going on?" I asked. "Why are you packing?"
"I just resigned" she quickly responded.
"What?" June and I both screamed in shock.
She giggled a little "I'm sorry. I should have told you guys first."
"Why?" I asked nervously. I hope she isn't leaving because of me.
"It's personal" she replied vaguely as she continued to pack her things. I watched silently as she cleared her desk. I couldn't help but think that this was all my fault. When she finished packing, she turned to us and said "Well, I guess I should be going now."
I couldn't just let her leave like this "Wait!" She looked back at me in shock. "Want to grab a cup of coffee?" I nervously asked.
She smiled kindly and said "That would be nice."
She grabbed her boxes and we walked to the cafe next door. "Grab a seat" I said. "I'll get the drinks. Same as usual?"
"Yeah" she smiled. "Thanks."
I placed the coffee on the table and nervously took a seat opposite her.
She took a sip of her coffee and sighed "I'm going to miss this place."
"Do you have to go?" I asked.
"Yes" she replied straightforwardly.
"If it is because of me..."
"It's not" she interrupted. "It's because of me."
"Why? I don't understand. What is going on?"
"I can't tell you the reason."
"Why not?" I screamed at her, but immediately regretted it. "Sorry."
She gave a conflicted smile and said "It is personal."
"Are you dying? Do you have cancer?" I asked worriedly.
She giggled "No. It's nothing like that."
"Then what? Tell me!" I was upset. "We've worked together for five years. I thought we could trust each other."
"It's not a matter of trust, Chris" she spoke seriously. "The reason why I'm leaving is far greater than you can imagine. If anyone were to find out...."
I could tell that she was truly concerned about this, so I said "It's okay. You don't have to tell me."
"I'm sorry, Chris" she hung her head a bit.
"I've known you long enough to know that you must have a reason for not saying anything. I'm sorry for prying."
"Don't be sorry, Chris" she said. "It's a reporter's job to ask the tough questions. Remember that."
"Still trying to teach me?"
She chuckled "There's not much left to teach."
"What are we going to do with out you?"
"I'm sure you'll be fine" she smiled. Then she reached into one of her boxes and pulled out a notebook. "Take this" she said as she handed it to me.
I was shocked "I can't take this! This has all your contacts in it!"
"It belongs to you now" she smiled. "Besides, I've already introduced you to all of them."
"I couldn't possibly take this. It's too important. What are you going to do without it?"
"I don't need it anymore" she replied honestly. "This is the last thing I can do for you, Chris. Please, take it."
"Will I ever see you again?"
She stood up, shrugged her shoulders and smiled "Who knows? Maybe someday we will see each other. I can't promise anything." She held out her hand and said "It's been great working with you."
So this is how it ends? This is your response to my feelings? You won't give me any hope? This is how you are going to say goodbye?
"Goodbye, Rose" I smiled as I shook her hand.
She grabbed her boxes and said "Bye" before turning and walking away.
I watched and waited until I could no longer see her, then I collapsed back into my chair. "She's really gone" I sobbed as tears fell from my eyes. "I can't believe she didn't even look back."
