Chapter Thirteen: Unexpected Surprises
I woke up surrounded by a very worried Neville, Ginny, and Madam Pomfrey.
"Where am I and what happened?" I asked them. They looked around at each other worriedly. Like they knew something that I didn't know.
"Well," Neville started, "Harry Potter was catching the snitch in the quidditch match and everyone was cheering and I was about to celebrate with you when I turned around and saw you lying down in the stands next to me. I freaked out and screamed Ginny's name because I didn't know what else to do. Then, Ginny hopped on her broom and flew up to us and carried us both back to the school via broomstick. Once we got to the school you were magicked up here, to the hospital wing, by Ginny. Madam Pomfrey just got back and we just got you to wake up."
"Thank you Neville. Thanks Gin." They both smiled at me, but it was a pained smile. I still felt dizzy and sick.
"Miss Granger, I'm going to have to preform some charms on you so if you could please stand up." I stood up and faced Madame Pomfrey.
"Sure, but may I ask why?" Why was she preforming charms on me? All I did was fall over.
"Not now." She waved me off. "Mr Longbottom, you may leave now. Thank you for bringing Miss Granger to my attention. Would you mind telling Mr Potter and Mr Weasley to get up here to the hospital wing immediately?"
"Yes of course! Right away Madame Pomfrey." And he took off out of the hospital wing running as fast as he could.
"Madame Pomfrey?" I tried to ask again. She just ignored me, however and went straight to work casting spells on me. Ginny was sitting there biting her nails in fright. If was all making me so worried.
"Now dear, there is just one more thing. Would you mind going into the bathroom and taking a pee on this stick?" I saw Ginny raise her eyebrows in horror out of the corner of my eye.
"Alright." I said taking the stick and walking into the bathroom. I was absolutely terrified now. Why was Ginny worried and I knew I read something about peeing on a stick over the summer, but I couldn't remember what it was —
When I was finished I walked back out, handed the stick back to Madam Pomfrey and walked back to the bed to lie down. I was about to start talking to Ginny again, but at that moment Harry and Ron raced into the hospital wing. Sweat was pouring down there faces and they looked absolutely exhausted. Ginny dragged over another chair as Ron sat down in Neville's old chair.
"What's wrong Hermione?" Harry asked looking worried.
"We got here as quick as we could." Ron said.
"Tell is what's going on."
"Are you all right Hermione?"
"If you two prats would shut up and let Madam Pomfrey speak we would all know what's going on!" Ginny butted in angrily.
"Thank you Miss Weasley. Hermione —" she said turning to me, "— Congratulations, your pregnant."
"P P P PREGNANT?" Ron stammered, his jaw dropping to the floor. Harry looked worried and Ginny looked that way as well. "How?"
"Well that's a stupid question Mr Weasley that I assume you already know the answer to." Madam Pomfrey stated looking slightly taken a back. "I will go call The Headmistress so that we can discuss your options."
We all sat there in silence staring at each other, not daring to say a word. My mind was racing. Pregnant? Me? But I was so young and how? Who? Like Ron I assumed it must be him but that didn't feel right. Then Professor McGonagall came marching into the room dragging Malfoy by the ear.
"I'm sorry having to hoist him along," she glanced at Malfoy, "but I needed to remember to give him a detention for — we'll never mind what's wrong with Miss Granger here?" She asked scanning all of our faces.
"Well you see," I started, "I'm well — pregnant." The word hung in the air as if I'd said 'Voldemort' for several minutes, or perhaps it was hours or a few days.
"Well," McGonagall was obviously trying to cover up her shock. "I assume this isn't a shock to you Miss Granger?"
"Oh, but it is Professor." I said hurriedly.
"But I assumed —" she motioned to Ron with her eyes.
"No no, it wasn't me Professor!" Ron shouted jumping to his feet and shaking his was with defiance. "It CAN'T have been me it must have been —" he glared at everyone in the room moving slowly through the people. Then, his eyebrows raised in realization. "—Malfoy." He finished with a hiss.
The room was quiet again. Ron looked angry. McGonagall shocked. Malfoy appalled; in fact if we weren't talking about me being pregnant with his child I would be laughing at the look on his face. Harry looked slightly horrified. Ginny looked half disgusted half amused at the thought. Finally Malfoy broke the silence.
"No no no Professor it can't have been me it just can't!"
"Well we won't know who's it is until the baby comes." Madam Pomfrey said cheerily.
"What astonishes me," said McGonagall, "is why in the world Mr Weasley would blame it on Mr Malfoy. Aren't you two together?" She asked pointing at me and Ron. I nodded. Ron was being held back from attacking Malfoy with his bare fists by Harry.
"It's because of what happened at the party Professor." Ginny said with a grin. Ginny just liked to be annoying I guess.
"What do you mean at the party? Oh —" McGonagall's face turned a ghostly white. "That."
"I'm so sorry Hermione I'm so sorry. We were both so drunk I'm sorry." Malfoy was crying. I was completely in shock. Malfoy was apologizing. That's absolutely unheard of.
"Well I guess we'll have to assume Hermione is carrying Malfoy's child —" Ron cut off McGonagall again.
"No! You foul— you evil— my girl—- Nooooooooooooooooo!" That was when Harry decided it was time to remove Ron from the room.
"So back to what I was trying to say — oh yes! So Hermione, you will be expected to live with Malfoy at school this year. I don't care how you manage it just figure it out on your own. After the child is born as you are both wizards you will be expected to care for it together. Oh and there is one last thing that relates only to Hermione." McGonagall turned to face me. "St Mungo's has developed a new serum for the Ministry plan next year. What it does is it reduces the amount of time a mother has to carry the child for. It reduces the risk of stillborn children. Would you like to try it Miss Granger?" I looked over at Malfoy who was trying not to make eye contact with me. Then I looked at both Ginny and Madam Pomfrey, both of which were nodding their heads for me to try it.
"Alright, I'll take it." I said causing McGonagall to smile.
"Wonderful then. I'm glad we've gotten everything sorted out. Oh, and good luck Miss Granger."
