Chapter Sixteen: There is No Change
After Charms class finished Malfoy raced me across the school to Transfiguration, a class that McGonagall was still teaching. We ran up and took the front seats again and McGonagall looked happy to see us.
"How are you two doing?" She asked us.
"It's going fine Professor." I said.
"Good. Good." She seemed slightly distracted. "May I speak with you for a moment Mr Malfoy?"
"Of course Professor." And he followed her out of the classroom. While they were gone I entertained myself by making my books and quills into different structures. I watched Harry and Ron sit in the back of this class too. Harry and I made eye contact for a second and I saw him smile, but Ron refused to look at anything anywhere near me.
Malfoy came back in from talking with McGonagall, but she had not returned yet.
"Malfoy?" I whispered.
"Yes Granger."
"What did she want to talk to you about?" I really wanted to know.
"Oh just things in general. Checking in on me to see how I'm doing." I was still sort of confused, but I did not push him. Then McGonagall entered the room.
"Good morning class."
"Good morning Professor McGonagall."
"Today we will be putting everything we have learned in Transfiguration together. You will be using magic to turn yourself into your partner. Your partner is the person you are sitting directly next to. Good luck." Malfoy and I automatically stood up and faced each other, but before I could draw my wand to turn myself into Malfoy I was stopped by a hand.
"It is unlike that anything will happen, but just in case I think it is best for you to not participate in the lesson in case you hurt the child." McGonagall looked at me with a caring smile. I must say she had a point.
"Ok." I said and watched Malfoy struggle to turn himself into me.
He did his hair first. He he grew it long and then changed the color to brown. He looked like an idiot. Then he cursed off the hair on his legs which was a dumb idea because he's not going to get that back. After that he used various methods of transfiguration to change his clothes and face. He kept messing up his face and squinting at me to look like he was concentrating.
In the end he did a good job in my opinion. When class ended, Malfoy ran out before McGonagall gave out the potion to return him to normal, so I grabbed one and raced after him. I was about to enter the Great Hall when I felt someone tug me by the shoulder into a broom closet.
"Who is this and what are you doing to me!" I screamed and kicked and hit every part of my captor I could reach.
"Woah woah woah slow down Miss feisty," The voice was familiar. I turned around and saw me. I screamed. Then I realized it was Malfoy.
"What do you mean by scaring me like that you git?" I shrieked hitting every part of him that I could reach with him holding me firmly at arms length. "You insufferable —"
"Granger." Malfoy was struggling to remain calm so I shut my mouth. "I figured you wouldn't want to go into the Great Hall for lunch considering what happened at breakfast. Let's go straight to the kitchens and get some food there." I followed him out of the closet and down the hall where Malfoy tickled the pear and we walked into the kitchens.
"Hello Miss Granger and —Miss Granger." A squeaky voice greeted us. It was a house elf, but I wasn't sure which one. He looked very confused.
"Don't mind him." I said. The house elf still looked very confused, in fact, it fell over because it was thinking too hard. This made Malfoy laugh so I kicked him in the shin and he roared in pain.
"Granger! Why?"
"Sorry Malfoy, but you can't be mean to — to— what's your name?" I directed my attention back to the house elf.
"Zakrey." He stared proudly.
"Well Malfoy, we can't be mean to Zakrey if he's going to be the one to feed us lunch. Now appologize. Apologize Malfoy."
"M sorry." Malfoy mumbled under his breath. "Now could we please have some lunch —" he looked at me "—Zakrey?"
"Of course Miss Granger and Miss Granger." And he was off to get us food.
After lunch I gave Malfoy the potion to undo his transfiguration spells. I noticed his hair was darker than it used to be and he was missing leg hair, but I didn't say anything for then he whisked us off to Defense Against the Dark Arts.
"I don't mind sitting in the front of the other classes." Malfoy started. "But this ones taught by Potter. We are sitting in the back." I didn't feel like arguing so I sat in the back corner, like Ron and Harry had done in all our previous classes that day.
When Harry entered the classroom almost everyone when silent.
"Work on your patronuses today." He said. "I need to talk to Malfoy." With that he left the classroom and gestured for Malfoy to follow.
Once they left the room everyone started talking. I decided to listen to what was going on outside so I snuck over to the door and leaned my ear up against it.
"If you lay one hand on Hermione's head —"
"I've already done more than that Potter."
"Don't interrupt or I'll give you detention."
"Right. Like you'd dare Potter. You were saying?
"I was saying that if you hurt her than I will make sure you end up in Azkaban with your father. I'm leaving to be an auror soon, but please don't tell her that. I don't want to hurt her."
"I won't, but only because I can't allow Granger to get hurt."
"Don't you —what?"
"She's carrying my heir stupid Potter. Do I really want something to happen to him? No. The name Malfoy already carries enough shame thank you very much."
"You only care for yourself Malfoy. I don't want to listen anymore."
"Thatisnottrueidocare —"
"What?"
"That's not true Potter. I do care for someone. I just don't need you knowing who. I'm done Potter."
That was my cue to get up and run for my seat. I ignored both Malfoy and Harry the rest of class. I was curious with what Malfoy had said but angry at Harry. Harry kept trying to make me talk to him, but no matter how many times he threatened me with a detention I did not give in. I knew Harry Potter wasn't really going to give me a detention.

That night, Malfoy brought me up to the room of requirement.
"We need a room where we can sleep." Malfoy said pacing back and forth. The room was a cozy one with a small table, a bathroom leading off and —
"Why is there only one bed Malfoy?" I cried out.
"I dunno. Try asking for another." I tried and I tried, but the room would not give in. "Oh well, I'll just sleep on the floor."
The ceiling had some sort of enchantment where we could look up and see the stars. I lay down on the bed staring at them. I felt Malfoy join me.
"Let's get a few things straight Granger. We will not do anything to act like we love each other unless we really do. There will be no kissing, or me being too nice, and no first name basis. I suppose hugging is ok, but don't push it."
"Malfoy? Hugging?"
"Don't push it Granger." And he moved off the bed to the floor.
***
After a few hours I called out to Malfoy.
"Malfoy?"
"Yes Granger?"
"Those stars sure are beautiful aren't they?"
"Yes they are." We lay there in silence until I was almost asleep and he broke it. "Do you know what else is beautiful?"
"What?" I asked, my heart racing.
"Me."
Slimy Git.
