Chapter Fourteen: The Last Night
"So, do you really think it was Malfoy who got you pregnant?" Ginny and I were back in our dorm room. I was spending one last night with her before I had to spend the rest of the year staying with Malfoy to take care of our child.
"Honestly I don't really know Gin. I'm inclined to think it probably really is him because I don't see who else it could be.
"It could be my brother," Ginny suggested with a smirk.
"It could be, but it doesn't matter does it?"
"No, I suppose it doesn't now that you have to spend the rest of your life with Draco Malfoy." She looked really sad at the thought.
"Well," I said trying to cheer her up,"why don't we enjoy the last night we have together. We could make a small party out of it."
"That's a great idea," her face lighting up. "I'll go find Parvati!" She walked out of the dorm and down the stairs to go find the other Gryffindor seventh year girl.
They came back up deep in conversation. Parvati had been very lonely since the Battle of Hogwarts. Lavender had had an — incident and so Parvati had been spending a lot of time with her sister, Padma, who was sadly not in Gryffindor with us.
"So Parvati," I began, "how was the party?"
"Oh it was wonderful." She went on and on about the various points of what happened during the party. "Oh and Seamus and Dean had a moment." She was grinning from ear to ear.
"What do you mean had a moment?" I was confused. When I looked to Ginny and Parvati for an explanation they just rolled their eyes.
"It means they kissed again. Right Parvati?" Ginny sounded exasperated.
"That is correct and then —"
Ginny and Parvati talked for the next hour about the relationship going on between Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas. I just sat there and tried to enjoy the moment. Would this be the last time something like this would happen? Was this my last golden evening with Parvati and Ginny?
After a while the subject moved to talking about our own relationships.
"So Ginny what's going to happen with you and Harry?" Parvati asked.
"I don't really know. I mean, I assume we will probably get married. Harry keeps bringing it up but I told him we will discuss it after school ends and he gets a job."
"Doesn't he already have a job as an auror?" Ginny looked at me skeptically and I freaked. Maybe he hadn't told her about the offering to go be an auror. Now I felt bad because she was going to question Harry about it until she got an answer. Parvati was looking back and forth between the two of us, obviously hoping for an answer. "No I guess he doesn't. Sorry Ginny that must have been someone else I was thinking of.
"Ok then —" Parvati was trying to move the conversation away from a delicate subject. "What about you Hermione? How are things with you and Ron?" My face turned red and the words got stuck in my throat.
"Hmm —" Ginny said faking thought. "I assume it's not going well —"
"Why?" Parvati looked very confused and upset.
"— seeing as she's pregnant with his worst enemy's child." Ginny was laughing so hard she rolled off the bed.
"Who?" Parvati looked bewildered and I was trying to cover my face.
"Draco Malfoy." Ginny replied with a smug look upon her face.
"WHAT?"
"That's what my dear brother said." She scowled. "So this is Hermione's last night with us before she has to spend every day and night in a room with him. I'm sure they will be best pals before long." She was back to laughing and wrapped her arm around me and pulled me into a tight hug.
"I can't believe it." Parvati, it was obvious, couldn't tell whether to be horrified, amused, or interested. "You're pregnant with your boyfriends worst enemy's child?" I nodded. "Well, that's quite an achievement Miss Hermione Granger."
I was getting overly emotional. All the laughing and shock and embarrassment. I started rolling around laughing, tears running down my face.
"Don't worry." Parvati said. "If this is your last night with us we should have an amazing girls night." So we played games into the night.
