Chapter Eighteen: The Only Thing She Ever Feared

~

I woke up to the bright shining sun and birds chirping at the window. I had Transfiguration first today, so I grabbed my books and parchment that I would need for the class. Then, I went to go find Ginny before Malfoy woke up. I met her in front of Gryffindor Tower since it wasn't that far away from the entrance to the Room of Requirement and I wouldn't have far to walk.

"Morning Hermione." She smiled a bright smile at me.

"Good morning Ginny. You look nice today." It was true. She was wearing a nice white top and her favorite pleated skirt. Ginny didn't normally like wearing skirts, but this one was special.

"Thanks Hermione." Her face lighting up even brighter. "You look nice too."

"Thanks Gin, but don't push it." We laughed and walked into the Great Hall together. Breakfast was weird because neither Ron nor Harry came down to sit with us. They must have been really mad at me. I heard a grunt and felt the weight of someone joining us on the bench. I turned around to face a half asleep Draco Malfoy. His hair, instead of it's normal slicked back was hanging over his yawning mouth and trying to enter.

"Why did you come down without me Granger?" He said between yawns.

"I wanted to come down with Ginny today. She is my best friend. Have you got a problem with that?"

"Nope." And then he fell asleep on the table.

" Boys." Ginny and I sighed and shook our heads in disapproval. Ginny and I ate our lunches in silence. When we were finished, I grabbed Malfoy's arm and dragged him out of the room to Transfiguration.

"W what's happening?" Malfoy mumbled, still asleep.

"We are in Transfiguration and Professor McGonagall is going to murder you if you don't wake up! So — WAKE UP!" I shook him until he fell out of his chair.

"Ow Granger! That hurts." He glared at me. Oh well, at least he's awake. I shrugged a noncommittal shrug and turned to the front of the class.

"All right class. Please pass up your homework." I reached in my bag and froze.

"Wait — what homework?" I whispered.

"This one." Malfoy said pulling a large piece of parchment out of his bag. "McGonagall assigned it a month ago."

I started panicking. What was I supposed to do? What would McGonagall do? She cast the spell to collect the papers. Mine wasn't among them. I was terrified. Then she started reading off the names of who had passed one in. Once she had finished, she looked at me.

"Miss Granger? Where is your paper?"

"I I I f f forgot it P p professor." I was terrified.

"Detention. I have never been so disappointed in you miss Granger. Now Miss Parkinson will take your place as smartest witch of your age." Her lip was quivering with anger and I was quailing under her gaze. I turned around and saw Pansy's face light up. Then McGonagall turned into Bellatrix Lestrange.

"You filthy mud blood failure!" She screeched at me. "You deserve to be punished. Draco come punish this girl and if you can't I'll do it for you." She started —

"Hey! Granger? Are you coming to class? What are you doing?" I was interrupted in writing down my dream. Malfoy looked over my shoulder to see what I was writing. When he finished reading he looked at me and spoke.

"Look Granger, I'm so sorry about when my aunt tortured you. If I could have done anything I would have."

"Why do you care what I dream about?"He turned away from me to hide his face.

"I don't Granger. What a stupid dream." He shouted at the top of his voice. "Scared of passing in homework. No one but you Granger! — by the way you did do the homework right?"
