I lied haha! Nothing could ever break Ethan and Ivy up! Except, you know who! So, sorry about that. *grins*
Ivy
It had been almost an hour since I got off the phone with Roman.
He had sounded okay, and not at all angry. I had apologized and told him giving him the chip was the only way to help him, but he didn't really want to talk about it, he was more worried about Ethan who still laid upstairs in the room I was quite sure used to be his.
I had taken the time to look around Glory's home as I came back down the stairs, leaving Ethan alone to rest for a while.
I spotted Glory sitting on one of the dinning chairs, her hand on her chin, her eyes holding a far off look that made it obvious she was lost in thoughts. I wasn't even sure if she heard me come in, until she spoke in her calm voice again. "Is he awake?" She asked without looking over at me.
Summoning enough courage, I went to take a seat with her at the dinning... I needed to know the truth... Why she was at that hospital, why Ethan? What did she want from him? "No." I answered her, my eyes not missing the sad look that drew down her brows.
The woman genuinely looked broken. She really did care about Ethan; and I knew she hated the fact that Ethan never believed her anytime she told him. I knew from the look on her face that no matter what happened, she was still going to be determined to prove it to him that he meant much more to her.
"I'm a terrible mother, aren't I?" She said out of no where, shocking me. "I ruined his life, ruined the lives of everyone he cared about, just because I was too insecure, too careful, too scared to lose him." She said.
I didn't know what to answer to that, so I just let her continue.
"All I wanted was to protect him... You know, like every other mother out there would do for their child. I only agreed to send him out because he was causing too much trouble here at the Inc... I didn't think I was going to think it would be a mistake... My intention was never to hurt him. I would never intentionally hurt that boy." She told me.
"Why did you adopt him?" I asked her, knowing she knew I was already aware.
Her blue eyes met my gaze. "Why haven't you told him?" She asked. "You know close enough to everything. I'm sure the little sneaking out you and Mr. Huxley did, came in handy."
I gulped.
"You claim to love my son, Fisher... Yet you lie to him."
"The fact that I love him, is the only reason I'm keeping all of this messed up nonsense from him. He isn't ready to deal with all of it."
"And who are you to be the judge of that?" She asked, a frown now pulling down her brows.
"A person who knows him. Ethan has so much to deal with already. What happened here tonight, is enough prove of that. I know you know this, that's why you haven't told him anything either, you're scared that if he knows you were responsible for the fire at his house years ago, he would hate you forever, isn't it?"
Judging by the look on her face, I was right.
"I can't just go on telling him half the story without fully understanding it myself Glory. Ethan deserves more than that. And if it means lying to him to protect him from the truth, and the hurt it is bound to cause him, then so be it." I said.
A small smile came to her lips. "You really do love him, don't you?"
I didn't reply to that... I didn't have to.
"Oh, young love. You know I used to be in love once."
"This would have been a great story, if I actually cared."
"I mean, spending time alone," she continued, ignoring my statement. "With one person for years, is bound to make you feel so useless and weak when it came to dealing with that person."
I furrowed my brows at her. Is she talking about Dean?
"Dean was my partner... The only person who stood by me after those pitiful humans threw me aside... He didn't leave even when I gave him the opportunity to. He stayed even after witnessing the death of my beloved brother." She smiled. "Dean was always there for me, and I loved him for being there."
"What happened?" I found myself asking.
"Ethan happened. That little boy came into my life, and changed everything. Right from the moment I saw him in that cradle, I felt it in me... I felt the love only a mother could have for a child. This was even without him having the only positive response from my new project."
At this, I sat up. "Excuse me?"
"You want to know the real story behind all of this right?" She sat up, pinning me with her gaze. "After the humans tossed me aside, they took charge and killed the operation. I was back to the beginning. Left only with my father's journal. I worked on his project with Dean for years, but while working on it, I had a side project, one I had been drafting out for years, something I created, not my father's nor my brother's work... But mine. After we created the dimension, we built it together, created our own world.
When Dean found out about my side project, he was angry that I didn't let him into the works of the project. We had an issue about it and I left the dimension to see through with the second phase of the project. The testing."
I blinked, trying to fully understand what she was saying. "Wait wait... So you were in that hospital to test your sick project on babies?"
"Yes, indeed I was. I tested it on 13 children, you and Ethan included. It didn't yield any positive result... The only reaction I got was the increasing temperature in the charts... You all except from Ethan. Crosschecking his charts, I realized it seemed like I did nothing to the boy. His temperature was normal. I found it really strange, and I paid more attention to him. I injected him with the serum over and over again, nothing changed. Oh, he would smile at me. His smile was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen."
She smiled.
"I grew so attached to the twins, Ethan Especially. I even signed up to be their Nanny, as I'm sure you very well know."
"All these time you still used him for your stupid project?"
She nodded. "He was extraordinary. My only true success. But I stopped. I had grown to love the boy so much to even place a needle against his skin." She said.
"I'm guessing you wanted him for yourself that's why you set up the fire."
She scoffed. "Ethan would have had a terrible life if I had let him stay with the humans. I made sure to protect Nathan. I don't know how Tiffany escaped, but-- that was the least of my problems."
"What made you think taking Ethan away from his family would make him happy?"
She sighed. "Obviously, I was wrong."
"You thought you were helping him... But every step of the way, you had made his life a living hell."
"I did all I did because he was my son, I thought I was protecting him, giving him a better life. Ethan is the only one in this dimension with unexplainable potentials. Even I don't know why the chip didn't give him a potential, and even as I've spent all my life trying to fix him; it was never my intention to hurt him in any way. When he's hurt, I'm hurt. It would take a life time to fix my relationship with him, but it is still worth it."
I shook my head. "What you need to do, is to stay away from him, Glory. Just let him be free, I think he deserves that. You don't have to stalk his every movement and alter his every step to protect him. You can as well do that from afar, without interfering in his life."
She gave me a long hard stare. "What do you know? You claim to care about him, and still you keep secrets from him, and you ask me why I hate your kind."
I leaned in, lowering my voice. "Yes, I do care about him, and that's exactly why I'm keeping all of this from him, just like I told you earlier. Do even know what it'll do to him if he knows what you did to his family? If he knows this insane obsession of yours had you using him like he was some designated test subject. Even as a baby, Glory, a baby!"
"That doesn't excuse the fact that he trusts you, and you're hiding this from him. You're not all too innocent either... And honestly, I kind of appreciate this because you're already doing a great job at deleting yourself from his life. I know my son, his trust doesn't come too easily, and he has given it to you twice... You already ruined it the moment you kept quiet about the adoption papers you and Roman found. You were wondering why I stayed away from your relationship with him? That's because I know very soon, you'll ruin it with your own hands."
I clenched my jaw, knowing she was right. I should have told Ethan, and I was going to tell him, at least before Glory opened her filthy mouth. But I had faith in my relationship with Ethan, so I stood my ground. "No, you're wrong, Glory. Ethan and I, we're stronger than you think. And I will tell him, but unlike you, I actually care and put his state of mind first, before saying something I know for sure would hurt him."
She still gave me that challenging look. "We shall see."
I stood up. "Thank God he's awake, we'll be out of your hair in no time."
She raised a brow. "And how would you know he's awake?"
A smirk grew at the side of my lips. "Like I said, we're stronger than you think."
At this, her brows came together, almost like her brain was busy connecting imaginary dots.
I left her to ponder on my words as I made my way back upstairs to where Ethan was.

Vote and Comment:-)
Updates are hopefully back on track. I've been kinda demotivated lately, and I don't know what to do to get back on track...
Leave a comment telling me what you like about this book (it might help)
What do you think about this chapter?
Now we know why Glory had been in that hospital all those years back, and we know how her obsession with Ethan commenced! What do you think of this discovery? Were you expecting it?
Also, Ethan does have a very unique potential, Any ideas on why he doesn't have any special abilities? Or does he?
