Ivy's pov
You know that moment. That moment you're caught in time, and you try to make sense of why your brain stopped working, or why you feel like your soul ran out of your body when you needed it the most. That moment when it feels like your world is spiralling around you, and you can't even stop it, cause you suddenly forgot how to talk or better still, how to express your emotions. That moment when your legs feel like water and you can't help but lose control of them. That moment when you momentarily forget who you are, what your name is, or even where you come from.
I dropped to my knees, my heart dropping in sync, and my eyes void of what they should have held, tears.
All around me was my house, completely torn apart, it was almost like I was a stranger in the house I grew up in. And right in front of me- right in front of me were my parents' bodies, pale, and stiff, with blood dripping from their wounds.
"Oh my God." I thought I heard Fiona's voice say, but I wasn't really sure, since all I could hear was the abnormally loud beating of my heart.
It wasn't long before I felt Ethan's presence, right beside me, I felt his hand on my shoulder. I gritted my teeth hard, closing my eyes, scared that if I opened them, I might just explode.
"Ivy, I- God." He said, probably as confused as I am, or probably not, I don't know.
"Who would do this?" Fiona's voice spiked up again.
"Like you don't know?" Roman sounded a little pissed. "I'm calling the cops."
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." A new, but familiar voice spoke up above me.
I looked up immediately, my eyes catching Caramels' dark figure, leaning on the doorframe to my kitchen, twirling a bloody dagger in her left hand with a dark smile on her face. "I wasn't expecting you guys this early, but your Mom, God bless her soul, was just too forward for her own good. I would have made a proper disposal of their bodies before you know, you all finally arrived."
It clicked, it clicked so fast and it didn't take too long before I pieced together all the information that came rushing into my head.
Caramel was one of them, and not until I saw a very familiar guy coming out from my kitchen with a bag of chips clutched to his chest, dressed in black leather pants and a black tank top, just like Caramels, was I sure of my theory.
He shot us a goofy grin. "Oh, hello everyone." Yates spoke up with a little wave.
Caramel was the girl sent to watch me?
I shot Ethan a confused look, and just when I did, I realized how devastation had made a home in his eyes, how his brows were etched in confusion, and hurt, how his whole face spelt guilt and frustration. "I'm so sorry." He said, unable to look me right in the eye, which was so unlike him.
He raked his hands through his hair. "I'm so fucking sorry."
A scoff escaped Caramels' lips. "What exactly are you apologizing for, Ethan? For lying to her? For disappointing her? For not even knowing how to perform your duties?"
"How could you do this?" Fiona spoke up.
"Do what? My job? It was a simple thing Fi, kill Ivy Fisher if we get a whiff of anything mischievous going on. And It's not like I never warned you guys, I did. Imagine my surprise when I found out that your little human friend paid a visit to the Inc's dimension. How professional of you both."
I shook my head, hoping I wasn't right about the second meaning to all of this.
"We could have talked about this Caramel, you didn't have to do this."
"Yeah, I didn't have to do it. I was just supposed to kill Ivy and get on with it. But then, there was a change of plans." Caramel said, her brows raising in wonder as she stared at me, then back to Fiona. "Hold on a sec. She knows about you too?"
"What's the point in hiding anything?" That was when I noticed the sudden change of her voice.
I closed my eyes, swallowing back the lump in my throat, before opening them back up, as they automatically swept towards Ethan in question.
"I'm sorry." He said, his hand slipping off my shoulder, as he got up to his feet, striding towards Caramel.
Yates dropped the bag of chips, rushing to clumsily stand right in front of Caramel, but with just one punch, Yates was flying across the room, his back colliding with the centre table which was now upside down.
"Give me one good reason, just one good fucking reason why I shouldn't break your neck right now."
Caramels' lips kicked up in a smirk. "I'll give you three, darling."
I felt Roman's hand on my shoulders as he helped me to my feet.
"One," Caramel spoke. "You can't, two... well, you just can't, three... you couldn't even if you tried."
"Why didn't you come to me first? Why did you do this?"
"I was only following strict orders Ethan."
"We could have found a loophole." Fiona said.
"I think we all need to establish the fact that when it comes to the Inc, there are no loopholes." Yates said, getting to his feet.
"Plus, it was kinda fun. The chase, the hunt... it was just like old times Ethan. When we'd go into the maze, hunt for stray humans and kill them, just because we were bored? Don't you remember?"
"What?" Roman spoke up from behind me.
Ethan glanced straight to my direction, but he looked away Immediately.
Caramel's humorless laugh resounded around the living room as she stepped away from Ethan, coming to a stop in front of me. "Did Ethan ever tell you about the Maze? The most popular region only accessible to the Willing, Futures and the Purest sector? We go there to hunt for humans. Humans like you who wouldn't just mind their own business, And some of the ones the Inc would take just because they felt like it. It's more like a special sector for your kind. But to our kind, it's like a fun sport, where we hunt, smell their fears from miles away and kill them just because. Did Ethan tell you he was best at hunting?" She smirked.
"We didn't come here to talk about the Maze sport Caramel, tell them and let's get this over with." Yates said.
Caramel shot a glare towards his direction, before turning back to me, her lips kicked up in a smile. "As much as I'd love to have some fun with your mind, there's something more important I have to say."
"Get out Caramel." Ethan said.
"Oh come on, allow me to finish the job."
"If you think I'm gonna stand by and watch you hurt Ivy, then you must be obviously crazy." He said.
Caramel rolled her eyes. "If I wanted to hurt your human girlfriend, I would have done that the second she walked through the front door."
"So what the hell do you want? Haven't you done enough already?" Fiona asked.
"Well, they gave Ivy two options." Caramel spoke up.
With my heart still unsteady, and my throat a little sore from swallowing back lumps constantly, I spoke up. "What are the options?"
Caramel's lips turned up in a smirk. "Since you know way more than you should, and for some reason the institute wants you, you're given a chance to remain alive, but permanently relocate to the Inc dimension, well, I personally think that's the best option, since," she glanced down at my parent's bodies on the ground. "There's actually nothing to stay back for."
"What's the second option?" I asked.
"Oh that's the fun part, I get to drop another body tonight. It's either I kill you, or you come with us." She said, her eyes moving to Roman's. "And for your friend, it's either we wipe off his memories, kill him or if he's willing, accompanies us to the Inc dimension, and forget he ever had a past."
"You know what I suggest we do?" Fiona spoke up.
For the first time tonight, I glanced towards her direction.
"I'm all ears?" Caramel said with a frown.
"Why don't I just kill you and Yates and send your chips straight to the institute with a note that says "Fuck you and your conditions"."
Caramels' jaw clenched hard as her frown turned into a full glare.
"I warned you about this, didn't I?" Roman whispered to my ears. "Now what are we gonna do?"
I gulped down. "You're going to accept their offer. Forget about everything."
His brows were furrowed in utter confusion.
"So, what's gonna happen to you?" He asked.
I looked back at Caramel. "I'm not going anywhere with you. Do whatever you want with me."
"What? No." Roman injected immediately.
Ethan shook his head, walking over to me, my eyes didn't leave his. "You can't do that." He said.
"Why not? I basically have nothing left to live for, and I'd rather die, than go back there."
"Listen to me," he said, cupping my face. "I know there's basically nothing I can say to make you feel better, and I know how you feel, trust Ivy, I've been there, countless times-"
"I'm not going anywhere."
"And I'm not gonna let you let them hurt you."
"So what? You want me to go back to the ones who ruined my life? The ones who ordered for my parents to be killed?"
"Can't you see you don't have any other option?"
"I do." I said, shrugging his hand away from me.
"Dying isn't an option." Ethan said, his green eyes trying to convince me.
"For once I agree with Ethan." Roman said.
"I know I'm basically the last person you want you want to listen to," Ethan said. "And I can't imagine the amount of questions running through your mind right now. But you're not thinking straight right now."
Yeah, I wasn't thinking straight because for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to cry. It felt like everything was turning upside down so fast, and how crying seemed to be impossible, it made me just want to scream my head off.
"Allow me?" Caramel said, coming closer to stand in front of me, her eyes dead set on mine, pausing before she leaned in to whisper in my ear. "This is an opportunity a lot of people would kill for. It's being handed over to you on a golden platter, it's too good to pass up, make use of it, or you might not get it again." She leaned away, her eyes meeting mine with her brows raised an inch in inquiry.
"What do you say?" She asked out loud, a dark smile playing with her lips.
"If you decide to go, I'm coming with you." Roman said.
"No."
"There's no talking about it Ivy, it's my choice." He said, already noting the protest in my eyes.
My heart felt so heavy and my whole body detected my decision, but if what I saw in Caramel's eyes was what I thought I saw? Then... she was right...
This really is an opportunity too good to pass up.
My eyes momentarily moved to the ground where they laid, making my heart squeeze in pain.
"I don't have all the time in the world, Ivy Fisher. What's it gonna be?"
My eyes went straight to Ethan's who had his eyes on me the whole time. He pleaded with his eyes, asking me to make the right decision.
I took in a shaky breath, letting it out a little bit unsteady before my eyes went back to Caramel's eager ones.
"Okay." I said.
"Okay what? You'd come with us or the other one."
"Okay, I'll come with you."
Her smirk grew wider. "Smart move, Ivy Fisher, smart move."
