Light in the Hallway
Sorry I'm so late!! I just couldn't write, at all...

Okay, the 13th track: 'Light in the Hallway'.
Of course, my very first reaction was joy and a high level of satisfaction on hearing Pentatonix slay this song!!
Later on, I thought about it more.
So, to start off, here are the lyrics (in case you aren't a hardcore Pentaholic like me and don't know the complete lyrics):
' Close your eyes, lay your head down
Now it's time to sleep
May you find great adventure
As you lie and dream
If you're scared of the darkness
I will calm your fear
There's a light in the hallway
So you know I'm here
So count your blessings every day
It makes the monsters go away
And everything will be okay
You are not alone
You are right at home
Goodnight, goodnight
You won't need me forever
But I'll still be here
For we all have our nightmares
Even me, my dear
From now on, if you need me
You can sing this song
There's a light in the hallway
Burning all night long
So count your blessings every day
It makes the monsters go away
And everything will be okay
You are not alone
You are right at home
Goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight '
'Light in the Hallway' is, lyrically, a lullaby.
But, to me, it's everything!!
Some lines, especially, to me, are as good as they can be.
I'd like to dissect some lyrics and poke about a little, first...
' If you're scared of the darkness
I will calm your fear '
This is probably meant to be a parent/guardian convincing their kid. But, to me, it implies warding off various things darkness could specify. Calming my fear, in this case, is something I've always been in search of. So, finding it brings a sense of satisfaction...
' There's a light in the hallway
So you know I'm here '
These lines bring forth a sense of belief of something being there for the listener. Especially for those with trust issues it's hard, but somewhat aids, even if only a little...
Due to some issues, I'd lost trust as well. This helped me a lot in remembering everyone's not alike...
' So count your blessings every day
It makes the monsters go away
And everything will be okay
You are not alone
You are right at home '
These lines are among the deepest lyrics in the album.
It's true for all of us. We ought to be thankful for what we have. When we forget this, it is then that we lose our footing and sink deeper in the quicksand.
' For we all have our nightmares
Even me, my dear '
Everyone does have their own nightmares, even those who seem to be steady or stone pillars...
I have a special connection with these lyrics, as such...
Moving on to the vocals, there's absolutely no need to say it, as it is so evident, but I will say it:
Avi's vocals are totally on fleek!!
The harmonies are perfect and completely in line with the lead vocals and the lyrics.
Even the 'ooh' part in the start and the beginning makes me go 'AAAAAH!!' *
There may be some faults, but I'm not going in search of them....
This always induces a sense of soothing in me whenever I hear it....
It is nice to hear Pentatonix singing such an emotional and slow song so spine-chillingly well, for, after listening to some killer upbeat songs (there are many such songs in the album, itself, like Sing and Cracked), I was kind of craving some good slow Pentatonix music and it was then that I heard this, so, yeah, it's perfect!!
All in all, it is a beautiful and amazing song that falls short of nothing (to me)...
What did you feel about 'Light in the Hallway'?
Let me know!!

* -> Reference to the 'Aaaaah!' that is symbolic of Patches/ Little Bits in 'Patches', but the 'Aaaaah!' here is more awe-inspired and not at all in fear or confusion...
Dedicated to the author of the awesome book 'Patches', and its sequel- @ObsessedwithTivi !!
