The feeling when a 7 year old is more accepting than Donald Trump

So I think that I may have accidentally explained homosexuality, trans sexuality, and gender fluidity to a seven year old yesterday.

My cousin and I were playing with Barbies, since I never got rid of mine. Her character had a secret admirer that she was going to meet at a ball that night, except I had no male dolls, so we just pretended one of them was a boy (his name was Eddie. Not sure why.). The two met up, learned about each other, and then introduced Eddie to my character.

Now, I am a hopeless romantic, and, combined with the fact that I third wheel enough in real life, I wasn't about to let my character be the loner of a trio. I started rummaging around to find a suitable doll when inspiration struck.

Kids, when left to make decisions about their opinions for themselves, are pretty accepting. This makes it a great time to teach them about all sorts of things, such as LGTB+.

This in mind, I pulled out a female doll.

"Who's your boyfriend?" my cousin (or maybe it was her character?) asked.

"Oh, no," I said. "This is her girlfriend."

"So...she's a girl?"

"Mmm hmm. Her name is Tabby," I added.

My cousin nodded, then looked at the blue-haired fairy doll known as Eddie.

"Eddie is also a girl," she (or, again, perhaps it was her character) proclaimed. "Secretly. But he told me, and he said I could tell you. Her name is actually Kathy."

I was slightly confused for a second. Actually, I very nearly lost my flow! Looking back, I'm not sure if it was because I hadn't thought of gender fluidity, or if it was because she had.

"So...which do they prefer to be called? Kathy and she and her or Eddie and he and him?" I asked. She informed me, in Eddie's voice this time, that Eddie was fine.

The coolest part about the whole thing is that she just rolled with it. She didn't say "No, a girl can't date a girl!" or anything like that, which is what I had originally anticipated. She was so... non-judgmental. It was pretty amazing.
