The Griffin and the Mountain Man
The Griffin and the Mountain Man
A Westerosi ballad that records the battle between Ser Oren Galehaut, the Knight of the Griffin, and Morg the Mighty, a Hill Tribe chieftain.
The Griffin and the Mountain Man,
A hero and his foe,
Did battle upon the highest peak
In ages long ago
The Mountain Man stood tall and proud,
A king he claimed to be
His soldiers raided, burned and killed,
In the name of his tyranny
His subjects cried out 'save us'
Their words reaching to the sky
And so a saviour came to them
Descending from on high
The Mountain Man soon heard of this
and spoke that this was wrong
For once there had been screams and cries
there was now hope, cheer and song
Taking up his weirwood club
A challenge the Mountain Man gave
And the Griffin came, hearing the words
Of this cruel, villainous knave
Their war cries howled like the winter winds
As their fight on the mountain began
The Griffin fought, he bled, he strained
Against the Mountain Man
For days, they raged on, on and on
Until, swift as a dart
The Griffin's metal claw did pierce
the Mountain Man's cold heart
But the Mountain Man said, 'I will never die'
And so, as the peak turned red
He heaved his club, then swung it down
Upon the Griffin's head
The Mountain Man cried 'Victory!'
and declared that he had won
But as he stood, heard a cry
A howl for the fallen one
A second Griffin, young and swift
Charged forth from the clouds above
And struck the bleeding giant down
To avenge the kin he loved
So the Mountain Man did fall from grace
And so ended he days
For no matter what you do or try,
You cannot hide from the Griffin's gaze.
