Appearance:
Laurana is a young human woman with dark hair that she often keeps tied in a bun, a heart-shaped face, high cheekbones, long eyelashes and sharp, grey eyes.  She is considered beautiful by many, but her hair and eye colour make it clear that she is not a blood-relative of her family, as children of House Selman typically have blonde hair and blue eyes. Laurana has a slender hourglass figure, and takes pride in her appearance. As such, she keeps a strict diet and insists on being well-groomed no matter the circumstances, often wearing makeup as well as powdering and perfuming herself.

Laurana has a crystal-clear voice that bears an aristocratic lilt, and moves with poise and elegance, keeping her back straight and her head held high. She is 5'4'' tall, and often wears high-heeled shoes to make herself seem taller and more authoritative. When she casts spells, her hands glow with arcane energy, as does her jewelled staff - the implement she uses to focus her magic.

Laurana has a keen fashion sense, and won't be caught dead in anything that she or others consider boorish or lacking in style. Her preferred colours are black, blue, silver and purple, and she owns many dresses, frocks and other garments in these colours - after all, a woman like her could never be seen wearing the same thing every day! She carries her wizard's staff with her wherever she goes, along with her spellbook and other belongings.

Or rather, she has her servants carry them for her.

Personality:
Despite being an adopted child, Laurana considers herself a true noblewoman and acts as one should in everything she does - for better and for worse. As such, she is very uppity, haughty and quite arrogant, looking down on commoners and anyone else she considers beneath her. When working with others, she assumes positions of leadership automatically, acting as though she is entitled to them because of her station. As a person, she has no interest in finding where she really came from, preferring not to even entertain the idea that her real parents may have been commoners. Having been raised by a noble family means she is accustomed to have riches, and she is inexperienced of what to do when the coin runs low.

In general, Laurana finds it quite easy to either ignore or downplay both her own problems and the problems of others. She is always calm, collected, and confident in herself, with a cavalier attitude. But while she does often have disdain for others, she isn't so beyond reason that she isn't willing to help - provided that she has something to gain from it. She is adept in the politics and manipulation of high society, and knows the value of making an ally wherever you can.

However, Laurana does have a softer side to her. She enjoys reading, and is highly appreciative of art, culture and other such niceties. She follows the law, considering an ordered society the foundation on which all good things are built, and has no respect or sympathy for criminals. She is respectful to fellow nobles, especially those of higher rank, as well as members of the faith - both due to social expectations and because they were the ones who found her as a babe and brought her to her adopted mother and father. Despite this, though, Laurana is not particularly religious.

Instead, she focuses entirely upon achieving her own goals and the goals of her family - the only thing in her life that she seems to be truly devoted to. She loves her mother and father dearly, as she does with all the members of House Selman, and she rarely seeks friendship outside those who are not her 'blood-relatives'. This tribalistic mentality also further bolsters her arrogance, considering her house and the nobility of the world to truly be better than everyone else, and she considers a person's social standing as well as their talents to be symbolistic of their worth.

Ultimately, Laurana's bluster and inflated sense of self-worth is all to hide a deep sense of insecurity that constantly lurks in the back of her mind. She is constantly in denial of the fact she is not truly of noble birth, and lashes out at those who remind her of this. It is also true (although she'll never admit it herself) that she is so devoted to her family because she feels that she has to earn her place with them, and within noble society as a whole. This desire is ultimately Laurana's greatest foil, as it will lead her to do morally questionable things if she feels it will allow her to be seen and accepted as a true noblewoman by everyone - which is what she wants more than anything.

Backstory:
Laurana doesn't know where she originally came from - not that she truly cares. All she knows is that she was born in or near the city of Baldur's Gate. Her earliest days of life were spent in one of the city's myriad temples, where she had seemingly been abandoned by her parents, whoever they might have been. As a baby, she was raised, fed and clothed by the clerics of the gods, and had a particular event not happened, she may well have become a priest herself.

But fate had a different plan for her.

One day, Frederick of House Selman, a powerful aristocratic family of the city, and his wife Erina Selman, came to the temple. When the high cleric asked them what they had come here to pray for, the Duke said that they were praying for a child, as they had been trying to conceive a baby for years with no success. Hearing this, the cleric decided to give the infant Laurana to the noble couple, feeling that they would be able to give the child a good life thanks to their wealth and influence.

As such, in a way, their prayers were granted.

Swiftly, Laurana became the officially-adopted daughter of Frederick and Erina, spending the rest of her childhood raised upon the family estate. This is where Laurana believes her life truly began. Since the Selmans were a wealthy house, Laurana wanted for nothing and was spoilt by her adoptive mother and father. She received an excellent education in all things, including how to behave like a proper lady and noblewoman. After all, she was the family's prospective heir for many years to come.

However, as the years went on and Laurana grew older, things began to change. Duchess Erina soon gave birth to a new baby, a boy of true Selman blood, which put Laurana out of the running for succeeding her parent's title upon their death. Also, the children from other noble families often ostracized her and bullied her due to the fact she was adopted. Lastly, her parents often used the fact that they had adopted a child to present themselves to others as noble and pure of heart... which caused Laurana to fear that they no longer saw her as a daughter, but instead merely as a means of boosting their own standing in the eyes of others.

When Laurana was 10 years old, it was discovered that she had a natural connection to magic. This presented a golden opportunity for her family, as to have a child or other relative be a wizard was considered a mark of prestige amongst the noble families. And so, Laurana was sent off to the nearest magic school as soon as possible. This, once again, reinforced the fear Laurana had about how her family viewed her - instead of their own child, she was now more terrified than ever that they simply saw her as an asset to be used however they needed.

Laurana hoped to turn this around, and so she spent her every waking moment trying to think of the best way to win the respect of the nobility and ensure that she stayed within the good graces of her family. As such, she threw herself into her magical studies, excelling in everything she did and becoming a workaholic in the hopes of creating an image of herself as an arcane prodigy. And when she graduated, she immediately began working her way into her family's political and business affairs, ensuring however possible that House Selman came out on top.

Laurana now acts as an agent for her family in far-flung lands, doing whatever they needed her to do. Her will and volition is focused purely on two things - ensuring the prosperity of her house, and winning the approval of the nobles she grew up amongst, including her mother, father and young brother Branden.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Laurana is a powerful spellcaster, with a large library of spells at her command. She can do many things, from charms and harmless magic tricks to hurling fireballs through the air and shooting lightning bolts from her fingertips. Her knowledge of the arcane is vast, and she has a repertoire of information on all sorts of magical creatures, including undead, fey, demons and other such beings. As such, she knows the dangers of dealing with such creatures - which makes it all the more surprising that she is willing to delve into dark magics, being they demonic or necromantic in nature, wherever she deems necessary in order to achieve her goals.

Being brought up noble courts, Laurana is also skilled in the arts of persuasion and manipulation. She is perceptive, has a great insight for working out people's true motivations, and can easily convince others to do things that would aid her in achieving her goals - either through the right choice of words or through the subtle use of a mind control spell. She is also a good liar, not above using deception or even seduction if needs be. Her childhood education in dance has also made her dextrous, skilled at performing and quick-thinking.

Laurana has many skills, but when it comes to any sort of physical labour, she is borderline useless. She isn't very strong or athletic, and since she prefers to keep to the cities, she isn't very experienced in surviving or navigating the wilds on her own. Her constitution also means that she cannot take much damage before falling in battle, and her pride means she would rather rely on her own spells to protect her than ask her companions for help. She also has a bad habit of underestimating others, especially commoners and other social lessers, which can damage her relationships with them.

Weapons:
A magic staff and spellbook, along with her spells.
