History lost and found - Poets Pub April 2020 Contest. My entry for weeks 1-2.

Challenge: write a poem inspired by a major event in history.

Historic event: D-day, Normandy June 6th 1944.

«War shall cease this day» - a Haiku chain

Without exception
The suppressed and subdued
We swore to defend

The oath we all took
To end the monstrosities
And reinstate peace

Spirits are lifted
Fear has left our brave hearts
Freedom shall prevail

Mercy shan't find you
As you have given us none
Face your destiny

Savour your last breath
Let the salty winds linger
Prepare to succumb

Thunder shall echo
Your supremacy will end
War shall cease this day
