momus
Momus smiled with malicious glee
the day I fled Corinth, deserting thee
And when I stopped upon the road
to assault the man who did me goad,
he smiled again and swayed my hand
to slay the King of my promised land
Momus crowned me King of Thebes
a city which flourished like a hive of bees
He gave me a wife who'd bear my sons
and a beauty that shone alike the sun
We ruled as equals and were adored
Across all of Greece, our glory soared
Momus hissed into Apollo's ear
and soon a mighty plague appeared
It flooded the streets like a rampant wave
claiming the lives it did so crave
Our people soon began to die
and the elders beseeched me, asking why
Momus turned my brother on me
Made me into a fool for all to see
The wretched soothsayer gave no aid
although his words stung like a blade
They led to questions, unanswered still
Who was this Laius? Who did I kill?
Momus led me on a merry chase
with rumours buzzing about the place
A message: Polybus was now at peace
Then when I thought my troubles would cease,
Momus stirred up a second storm
Another messenger come to inform
Momus watched, calm and composed
as the tale of my lineage was disclosed
It became too much for my poor wife
who shut herself in with her mental strife
How quick her life had gone astray!
A wife and mother - in more than one way
Momus hung my darling wife
and my despair began to run rife
I seized her brooch and gouged my eyes
cursing the god that fed me lies
But Apollo had not betrayed my fate
My fate was one I did create
Momus walks beside me still
He guides my hand and drives my will
He spreads the name of Oedipus Rex
No longer a name which evokes respect
but rather a sad and sorry tale
of a son and King no man would hail
A/N
* Momus is the Greek god of irony and satire
* By brother, I'm referring to Oedipus' brother-in-law (and also uncle) Creon, not a biological brother
* Polybus was Oedipus' adoptive father whom he fled from because he believed he would murder him as the prophecy predicted, hence why he was relieved to hear of his passing
Did I really just write a poem about Oedipus consisting of 8 stanzas, six lines each, because of a song about him?
You bet your ass I did
This poem is dedicated to any UK Classics students that had to read about this incesty sonovabitch, only to be told it doesn't matter because our exams have been CANCELLED hahaha fun times in the UK right now...
Anyway go listen to Ulysses Dies at Dawn!!
