Raffle short story!!
Hi! so i'm gonna use this chapter as a raffle entry. What I have to do is write a short story about one of @ACatwithWings OC's to be able to use it in one of my own stories. They are pretty cool and do a ton of Warriors stuff so if you like Warriors you should definitely check them out.
So the OC I'm doing the short story for is named Oceanpaw. (That's her)
and so the story begins....
Oceanpaw was sitting next to the fresh-kill pile sharing a thrush with one of her closest friends, Canopypaw, a light and dark brown tom who had deep green eyes. They had just gotten back from a hunting patrol. Oceanpaw had returned with two mice and the thrush they were currently eating. Canopypaw returned with a squirrel. Oceanpaw excelled at hunting.
Like Oceanpaw, Canopypaw was kind, hyper, and tended to stick to their small friend group. Unlike Oceanpaw, he excelled in battle for the simple reason that he had a temper that boiled over in a heartbeat when someone he care about was in danger.
Oceanpaw finished her share of the thrush and licked her jaws with satisfaction. She closed her eyes and drew a deep breath.
"I love Greenleaf!" she breathed out. Canopypaw chuckled beside her as he, too, licked his jaws clean. "What?" Oceanpaw asked, puzzled as to what was so funny about expressing a fondness for a season. "Nothing." Canopypaw replied as he shook his head slightly. "Well it's something now, tell me!" Oceanpaw rolled onto her back and batted at Canopypaw's ear with a paw like a kit.
"It's just that you do that every day during greenleaf like clockwork." Canopypaw said sitting up and smacking her paw away with his own. She rolled over and sat up as well. "That isn't true!" She said. He gave her a 'Right, ok' look. She curled her tail around her paws and thought about it. Her mind buzzed as every greenleaf she could remember passed by and she realized he was right. She giggled sheepishly and stood up, flicking her tail on his shoulder in the process. "Ok, so maybe it is somewhat true." She grinned and turned towards the medicine cat den. "C'mon, let's go see Cranewing!" She called back to him as he jumped to his feet and darted ahead of her.
They padded up to the tendrils of vine that covered the way inside the den. Oceanpaw went first and Canopypaw bounded in soon after. They entered the den and immediately spotted Flametail. "Hi Flametail!" Oceanpaw did a little jump in greeting. "Hello, and before you ask Cranewing is in the back taking inventory." Flametail replied without looking up from whatever she was doing. "Thanks!" Canopypaw replaid as he and Oceanpaw went to the cleft in the wall used for herb storage.
"Oh Cranewing!" Oceanpaw did the special sing-song voice their best friend hated oh so much. She heard a groan and an off-white cat head popped out of the cleft while the golden eyes stared at her. "what do you want Oceanpaw? I'm busy." He said as he dipped back into the cleft. "We just wanted to see our bestest friend ever!" Oceanpaw said as she poked her head into the cleft. "So whatcha doin'?" She asked. She saw Cranewing draw a deep breath obviously getting annoyed with her at the moment.
"I'm taking inventory. Will you go bother someone else? What about Sweetsong?" He asked. She knew he meant no harm in his attitude. That was the thing with Cranewing, he acted like a grump all the time but if you ever needed anything from him at all he would do everything in his power to help.
"Sweetsong is still on border patrol. She won't be back 'til later" Canopypaw answered for her. "Oh, fine then. Do me a favor and check on Scarletlake, she is with kits and I want to know how she is doing." He said. "Hehe, you know this isn't her first litter." Oceanpaw meowed as she pulled her head from the cleft. "Obviously I know that, Sweetsong and I are from her first litter, mouse-brain." He grumbled.
Canopypaw and Oceanpaw pushed their way into the nursery to see a dirty blonde cat sitting beside Scarletlake. "Sweetsong! We thought you were on patrol. Cranewing told us to check on Scarletlake." Canopypaw meowed.
Sweetsong looked back at us with her deep blue eyes and smiled. "I was about to come find you, I just wanted to drop by and see how my future littermates are doing." Her voice was so soft and kind that you'd never think she could hurt anyone. Truth is she didn't like to, she liked to hang around the nursery to help queens and kits in need. No one ever knew why, but it was silently agreed to not ask.
Sweetsong said a quick goodbye to her mother and met Oceanpaw and Canopypaw outside the nursery. They all looked to Silverpelt. "It's gorgeous." Sweetsong was the first to comment. The 'paws nodded in agreement. They sat there until their necks hurt. Oceanpaw looked around and saw the camp clearing out as cats went into their dens for the night. "It's getting late," She started. "Let's get some rest. Goodnight Sweetsong." Oceanpaw called back as she and Canopypaw went into the apprentice den.
Oceanpaw curled into her nest, she felt Canopypaw next to her. Their pelts were touching, his warmth seemed to lull her into a comfortable slumber.
------ --------
Oceanpaw was in a luscious, unfamiliar, green clearing somewhere. The bushed shook with the presence of prey, it was sunny and nice outside. "Lovely here, isn't it?" Oceanpaw spun on her paws to see a tan cat with a piercing green gaze sitting neatly on a rock on the edge of the clearing. "W-who are you? What is this place?" Oceanpaw asked. "I am Thornstar, and this is Starclan." The she-cat replied calmly.
Oceanpaw's eyes widened. "No, you aren't dead. And yes, I am the cat the elders talk about oh so long ago." Thornstar nearly rolled her eyes. Oceanpaw clamped her jaw shut after realizing it had opened on it'a own. "I have a message for you. For only you. A medicine cat would wait for protocol and such, we do not have time for that. I need you, Sweetsong, Cranewing, and Canopypaw to go to the shore of the lake. There is a den of badgers you must take out by the next gathering or more will come and it will be the Badger War all over again." Thornstar said quickly.
Oceanpaw's jaw dropped again. She had so many questions, but just as she had drawn up the courage to ask, the former Thunderclan Leader faded into nothingness. Oceanpaw blinked and she was awake in her den with Canopypaw poking her.
"Come on, we have dawn patrol." He mewed groggily. Oceanpaw puled herself up and shook the moss off of her pelt before heading to meet Twighill, Canopypaw, and her mentor, Petalleaf. They were about to walk through the barrier. "Wait!" Cranewing yowled to the patrol. He and Sweetsong padded up to the group. "I need to collect herbs, Sweetsong is here to help me. Mind if we tag along? I need to go to the lake." He said. "Not at all, let's go." Petalleaf replied.
Oh Starclan! You're setting us up and they don't even know! Do I even know? It was just a dream, who'd believe me? She thought grimly.
As they padded closer to the lake, it hit her. She shook her head and opened her mouth to taste the air. There was no mistaking it, that was badger. "Petalleaf, do you smell that?" She asked. Her mentor paused and opened her mouth. "What? The squirrel? We aren't hunting." Petalleaf called back sharply.
Oceanpaw froze with horror. No,no no no no no. This is NOT real. Get a grip Oceanpaw. She tried desperately to calm herself and continue but she couldn't. Canopypaw saw this and immediately was at her side, his tail across her shoulders, leading her through the undergrowth.
They don't smell it, How do they not smell it? She thought. She was almost gagging at the stench.
She cautiously brought up the rear for the rest of the patrol. The scent never died down until she got into camp. She looked around and saw that Mossstar had called a meeting.
Perfect! I'll tell them about the dream! She thought.
"I called you all here to announce that Scarletlake is with kits! Thunderclan will be proud to welcome them into the world! Congratulations Gorsetooth and Scarletlake!" Mossstar said before he bounded off of highledge.
"Wait!" Oceanpaw cried out. The attention turned to her as she padded in front of the group of cats. "I've had a dream from Starclan!" She waited for the gasps of shock to settle. "Thornstar told me of badgers near the shore of the lake, she chose four cats to chase them out before Badger War II broke out." She yowled. "Me, Sweetsong, Cranewing, and Canopypaw." She finished. Everyone was quiet. "That is fox-dung!" Someone cried. "Just because you are pretty and are the leader's only daughter doesn't mean you can make up some prophesy for you and your friends you spoiled little kit!" She heard a different member yowl. Soon there was a group of yowling cats upset that their new generation would do this.
Oceanpaw looked around horrified. She looked dead into her father's eyes as he padded up and whispered to her "I'm so disappointed that you would do this. Lying to your clan is wrong." She just stared at him before sprinting out of the thorn tunnel
I'll just prove it! She thought. She was hurt that her own clan mates thought so lowly of her. Her heart was beating so fast that she didn't realize the pawsteps behind her until she stopped. She turned to see Sweetsong smiling sadly at her, Cranewing nodding respectively to her, and Canopypaw looking at her with an unknown, yet pleasant, emotion. She collapsed on the ground and let out a grief filled cry.
Even when her whole clan was against her, even when she desperately tried to explain something that sounded like a story an elder would tell, even when she didn't have any other word than a dream that might have been from Starclan, her friends were there. They all looked at her with full trust and belief. Not a doubt to be seen.
She pulled herself together and pointed to a direction with her tail. "They are this way." She said and dashed in the same direction. She heard pawsteps behind her and whimpered a little. She didn't deserve such loyal friends.
Soon enough the stench started to fill her lungs as she struggled not to gasp for air. She looked back to see her friends be affected by it, too. She pushed through a fern and saw the opening of the den. Two badgers lumbered around and 2 of their kits played on a hill. Oceanpaw waited a moment before looking back at her friends. All of them were ready to defend their clan. And their friends.
"Canopypaw, now would be the time to get angry." Cranewing said. Canopypaw had this tendency to loose his temper when one of his friends or loved ones was in danger. We watched as Canopypaw closed his eyes and focused on something. He sat there for several heartbeats and there was no change. Finally, he sighed defeated. "It isn't working." He said. We looked at him confused. "Normally I just think about my enemy hurting my family, but this time it didn't work." He said sheepishly. Oceanpaw padded over and touched noses with him. "Please," She whispered. "For me." She added quietly.
She wasn't mouse-brained. She knew how he felt about her, even as they were kits, Her mother, Moontide, had kitted Oceanpaw less than 3 days before Fernheart had kitted Canopypaw. They had been together ever since. She could see the signs. She knew she definitely felt the same about him, but she wouldn't admit that to him yet.
Soon enough, Canopypaw started shaking. Oceanpaw stepped back to see a sparkle in his eye that told her he was ready. "ATTACK!" She yowled and charged the nearest badger. They had the element of surprise so she easily got a few attacks in before the brute recovered. It swung at her head but she ducked and darted under it to scrape it's soft belly. She darted back out and raked her claws across it's flank, taking blood and fur along with her when she lept back to avoid It's yellow tainted fangs.
She glanced over and saw Canopypaw keeping up with the brute. Sweetsong showed up by her side while Cranewing was with Canopypaw. She nodded to Sweetsong and used her to boost herself onto the badger's back. She dug her claws into it's shoulders and used her hind legs to scratch it along it's spinal cord. It shrieked in pain and bucked and turned trying to be rid of the spitting screeching thing causing all the pain.
Oceanpaw jumped off but wasn't quick enough because a strong paw threw her against a rock wall. Her vision blurred as she struggled to sit up. Pain shot through her right hind leg. She shook her head and her vision cleared enough for her to see Canopypaw standing in front of her and one of the badgers coming toward them. "Canopypaw go! run quickly! I'll be fine!" She tried to yell at him but he wasn't listening.
He just looked over his shoulder and smiled before charging the beast. He whipped around and in front and this way and that. The other badger had been chased off with her cubs. Cranewing and Sweetsong aided Canopypaw as they drove him away. They cheered for a split second before a dark paw came out and scratched Canopypaw one last time before turning and fleeing. Blood gushed from his shoulder to his chest. The cut was deep and long. An ear splitting screech came from deep in Oceanpaw's throat.
Despite the throbbing pain coming from her leg, she sprinted toward Canopypaw. "O-Oceanpaw." He started. "Shh, don't speak. you'll be fine. We'll take you back to camp. Come on, Sweetsong-" Oceanpaw looked at the horrified she-cat who seemed to be in a daze. "Sweetsong!" Sweetsong's gaze snapped up to meet Oceanpaw's. "We need something to carry him with. find some vines or something." Oceanpaw ordered. Sweetsong nodded and then was off in a heartbeat. "Cranewi-" She was cut off by Cranewing shoving dock into her mouth. "Chew." He ordered shortly. She chewed the dock leaves until it was a mushy substance.
She saw he had Cobwebs and Goldenrod chewed and prepared. She spat out the mush into Cranewing's paw and watched as he applied it. Canopypaw squirmed from the pain. Oceanpaw touched her forehead to his and he immediately relaxed. Sweetsong soon returned with vines tied to a peace of bark filled with moss and feathers. "Good work." She nodded to Sweetsong. The three of them hauled Canopypaw onto the piece of bark and set a quick pace to camp. Oceanpaw was limping heavily and all four cats were loaded with scratches, but none of them slowed down.
They burst through the thorn tunnel to be greeted with gasps of horror and surprise. Flametail was already at their side. They took Canopypaw to the medicine cat den. Oceanpaw tried to follow them but Sweetsong stopped her with a paw. "They need to concentrate." She said smoothly. "I need to see him! Sweetsong let me go!" She yowled at Sweetsong, rage coming forward. The rage left as quickly as it came when she saw the pained expression on her face.
This is hard on her, too. Oceanpaw realized. She stepped back and nodded silently. She headed for the apprentice's den and laid down. Her tiredness suddenly overpowering the pain in her leg. She was asleep in seconds.
