Jurassic World

Dr. Valerie Madrigal

(I had written this fic, Dauntless, and even posted it but I took a break when my muse died then lost everything when my hard drive crashed)

Inhaling sharply at the mention of her father, she quickly correctly, "Its Dr. Madrigal actually."

"Your mother's name, yes; a slight oversight on my part. It won't happen again," he apologized sincerely, "I assure you."

"See that it doesn't, Mr. Masrani." The man chuckled, pleased that he didn't need to introduce himself. He gestured towards her boat, silently asking for permission to come aboard. With great reluctance, Valerie nodded her consent and helped him on. "I'm also half Jewish, on my father's side. Non practicing," she told him sardonically, "in case you want to add that to your file."

"Its in there," he answered. Valerie subtly rolled her eyes.

"Of course it is," she mumbled.

Masrani recruited marine biologist Valerie Madrigal, elder daughter of Dr. Ian Malcolm, after witnessing a video of her swimming perfectly at ease with a tiger shark. He knew she'd be perfect for reopening the park, particularly for the mosasaurus he planned to put on display. Valerie had been reluctant to accept the offer, until Masrani promised to fund her research into whale sharks for at least two more years. That was an offer she couldn't refuse, not in a million years, not with her funding about to be cut off. So she takes the job and bonds with the mosasaurus once it hatches, similar to how Owen and Barry bond to the raptors. Valerie continues her research on the side, off the island, but works as a performer with her mosasaurus, Levi -- short for Leviathan -- in a style similar to SeaWorld with killer whales.

Valerie and her father have a strained relationship. They hadn't spoken in months and, when he found out from her sister that she accepted a job at Jurassic World, he tried to talk her out of it but his wording was horrific. Working at the park, she's happy that they haven't spoken in years and that her father isn't in her life. An intellectual who loves her Levi, she still knows how to wind down and party with her coworkers. She starts a romance with one of the raptor trainers, Barry.

At some point during the first movie, I imagined Valerie would hit a turning point with Ian. She'd go from hating him and not speaking to him at all to repairing that relationship. I'd want to parallel that scene in third movie where Alan calls Ellie but the call gets disconnected cause he's trapped underwater, except Valerie calls her father to admit he was right and plead for help but getting cut short. At the end of the movie, she'd survive and be reunited not only with her mother and siblings (I forgot to mention she has a brother, Elijah; in the books, Ian has 3 kids but only Kelly gets named) but also with her estranged father. It would be the first time they'd see and speak to each other in about three years, the start of a reconciliation and a lot of healing on both sides. For the second movie, she'd be in court with him, a united front, that they need to let nature take its course and destroy the dinosaurs still living on the island despite the fact that letting Levi die breaks her heart.

Noah Laurent

(Noah was created in the 'if they had a kid' meme for Valerie and Barry)

Naturally charming. Claustrophobic. Quick with jokes or sarcastic/dry remarks. Tends to be overconfident (even boastful) when he's doing well in something, but then losses all confidence when something goes wrong or he fails. Easy going; chill. Too clever and smart for his own good. Kind-hearted. Tenacious. He's multilingual, fluent in English, Spanish and French. Accomplished violinist. Endurance; he loves basketball so he's fast. He adores his dad and likes him best. Like, he loves his mama and he's definitely a mama's boy but he and his father connect in a whole different way. Maybe it's because he's an only child and his dad is the only other male in the house, and cause grandpa is a little crazy. His dad is his dad but he's also his best friend.

Unfortunately, much to Valerie's chagrin, Noah takes after Ian. Her entire life was spent avoiding mathematics and chaos theory, and then her kid goes and becomes a mini-Ian! At least he's not an obnoxious narcissist all the time like his grandfather, that's a bonus. Sadly, her son also hates the beach. That hurts and offends his mother on a deeply personal level. He's a bit of a germaphobe so he can't get past the fast that the ocean is literally a giant toilet bowl for everything that lives there, as well as being a human dumpster. Doesn't stop Valerie from trying though.
