Deborah "Deb" Uris
"You shouldn't of done that. He's just gonna spend all summer torturing me," Stan moped sullenly.
"I'd like to see him try! No one gets to torture you except me." When her baby brother didn't laugh at her joke, Deb sighed and got serious. "Look, if Bowers and his thugs bother you or your friends again, you tell me, got it?"
"...Got it."
"I mean it, Stanny! Vic might not seem so bad lately and Belch is a total troglodyte, but they're not even close to the Bowers and Hockstetter levels of crazy. Some of the rumors I've heard about them, ugh! Just promise me you'll steer clear of them."
"I try to steer clear of them all the time! Richie doesn't make it easy."
"That kid is seriously just begging to get smacked," she muttered viciously, rolling her eyes at the mention of the Tozier boy. "Anyway, onto more important things, like how my baby brother is gonna be a freshman in high school!" she teased happily, reaching over to the passenger seat to playfully poke her brother. Stan laughed and begged her to stop. "I can't believe I'm not even gonna be here to show you around or tease you in the halls. Its just not fair."
"It'll be difficult but I'm sure we'll both survive," he retorted, voice dripping with sarcasm. "You'll be back for Hanukkah, right?"
"I'll be on winter break, so yes. Mom would have a conniption fit if I wasn't. Now, crank up those tunes. Let's start summer off right with Stan the Man!" she crowed, drumming along to the loud music on her steering wheel.
"And Dizzy Debs!"
"No! I know my brother, Chloe, and he wouldn't do this. He'd never kill himself. Never! Not unless someone..."
"What, coerced him?" Deb was silent, not daring to say that was exactly what she thought. it didn't matter though. Her wife could read her like a book. "Honey, that's just not rational."
"I know its sounds crazy but its the only thing that makes sense! Stan wouldn't do this!"
"Okay. Okay, I believe you," Chloe assured her, voice calm and soothing. "But who would want Stan to kill himself?" Deb wasn't thinking rationally about this tragedy, wasn't seeing it for what it was, in Chloe's eyes.
"I don't know! " she screamed hysterically. Chloe's hurt stare weighed on her and Deb sighed deeply, trying to calm down. "I don't know. Patty said Stan got a phone call before he...um, I had the number traced. It came from Derry."
"What the hell is Derry?"
"Our hometown, mine and Stan's. Its in Maine. Haven't thought about it in years." Truthfully, Deb had forgotten about Derry entirely. When the tech had traced the call for her, she hadn't recognized the name at first. It took at least ten minutes before her brain recalled Derry, that horrifying summer in '89 specifically. Deb had never been so happy when she'd moved away from Maine for good. She wished she could forget the town so easily again.
"And you think someone there convinced Stan to kill himself? Who would do that? Why?"
"That's exactly why I'm going." She tossed the last bag into the backseat of her car and slammed the door shut. Rubbing her face, Chloe approached Deb and caress her face.
"You know I love you and I'll support you no matter what, but we have a son who needs you here. He just lost his uncle and now one of his moms is running off to–"
"To track down the sick fuck that did this and beat the shit outta him," she argued. She kissed her goodbye and climbed into the car. Rolling down the window, Deb assured her, "I'll be back in a few days, I promise. Its just Maine, baby. What's the worst that could happen?"
