The Story Behind This Poem:

I had finally outgrown my use of jargon or difficult words by the time I wrote this poem. A teacher had made sure of that—she'd said using fancy words was just a way to try and sound smart, but honestly, it turns people off. Her advice stuck with me, and I started making my writing simpler.

I remember writing the poem because I was starting to lose her interest.

The girl I'm talking about was a classmate—someone I had confessed my intentions to, wanting to be her boyfriend.

All the descriptions you see in the poem were to impress her—but I'm not sure if there was any truth to what I said. I was simply attracted to her, and I was in love.

I would have scratched this poem if it hadn't seemed good to me, because this part of my life was very embarrassing and forceful. I wouldn't want to relive it—it was immature.

I couldn't quite put my finger on what drew me to her. She seemed to keep me around for her own amusement, and while she wasn't fully certain about me, there might have been something there.

The day I finally gave up, I felt more relief than regret.

She was the first girl I really struggled to move on from, and it took me years. Because of that, I just couldn't get excited about anyone else I could've dated after.
