Mission

Third Person P. O. V.

Naruto wanted to scream and yell as this was the moment and day of the mission. It seemed that what was the Third Shinobi war had been getting worse, and Konohagakure wasn't doing so well. And it had seemed they would be going on a mission to destroy the Kannabi bridge. This was it, the one thing that Naruto had been sent back for so that his love, friends, and everyone could live. But something deep inside of him had pushed for him to kill Obito, as he was the reason Madara had a chance to do the Infinite Tsukuyomi. If he killed Obito then Madara wouldn't have a pawn to do his bidding, and the 4th war would have been avoided. And even the Uchiha clan had a chance of still existing if he killed Obito.

"We all seem to be here. But Kakashi has an announcement to make" Minato said, beckoning for the young boy to walk up to him. They all watched as Kakashi walked up. Naruto knew exactly what the announcement was, and where this would lead to. Kakashi had told him this story many times, each time made him regret ever being a jerk. But as he stood beside Minato, he didn't look much like the cocky kid Kakashi had described. Instead, he looked different as if he was proud of achieving his status, but he didn't appear to be above anyone. Naruto had to smile at the fact he was changing Kakashi, which he hoped wouldn't affect Kakashi back in the future.

"I have been promoted to Jounin" His eyes staring directly at Menma, as if to say he was just as good as him; almost better. Naruto couldn't help but sigh internally at the fact Kakashi wasn't truly different. Rin smiled, happy for her teammate to get promoted. Obito glared at Kakashi, kicking at the ground as if uninterested in Kakashi's promotion. Naruto couldn't help but soften at the sight, understanding just how Obito felt. Everytime Sasuke passed him up in unimaginable ways, he got very upset and acted as if he didn't care. He couldn't help but think that this was exactly like his team.

"That's amazing Kakashi-kun! It must have taken a lot of hard work and dedication to be promoted at such an early age. You really are amazing" She smiled as she complimented Kakashi. Naruto couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy as Kakashi nodded his head at Rin, his eyes softening. She was only a kid and yet he was jealous of her. Obito ,on the other hand, was infuriated, his cheeks turning red with anger. Naruto wondered how many times Obito got into a fight with Kakashi, trying to show he was just as good, and lost. He wanted so badly to reach out to Obito, to comfort him or say he was just as good as Kakashi. But he stayed put, waiting to see what would happen.

"We also have a mission in which Kakashi will be assisting me, and take over as captain. I would like you all to treat him the same way you treat me, and no different." Minato sternly said, glancing at Obito. Naruto had to smile, remembering how he was often scolded for being the one to go against plans involving anyone but him leading. Rin giggled, focusing her attention back on him. It was obvious that she liked him, but he couldn't tell just how deep it was. From his understanding, she liked Kakashi while Obito liked her. But from the blush she has every time she talks to him, he knew her feelings were developing. And with that, he had Kakashi to himself.

"We are needed at the front lines, but we also need to destroy the Kannabi bridge. Kakashi will take you guys to destroy the bridge as I will be at the frontlines. Do you all understand?" He paused" I will also have Menma asist you guys as he is a jounin. You will also treat him as you would treat me. Kakashi, will you have any problems with that?" Minato asked. Kakashi glared at Menma, nodding his head. Menma smiled as he cocked a head at Kakashi, challenging him to do something. Of course the little Hatake stood still, keeping his glare fixed on Menma. Naruto really needed to be grateful that Kakashi had changed or else his sensei would have been uptight and an ass, or not even their sensei.

"Since there are no objections, we will continue with the mission as of now. Let's go" Minato began to walk away, Obito and Rin following close behind. Menma waited for Kakashi to go along, him being last, but the little Hatake stood there, arms crossed and a glare on his face. In a split second Kakashi was at Naruto's throat, a kunai pressed against his throat. Naruto didn't react, his face completely void of emotions. It seemed to anger Kakashi that he had gotten no reaction from him in any way. He couldn't help but wonder who Menma really was, and why was he there. So many questions he wanted to ask, but it would only lead him to more questions. And all he could do was wonder, and keep wondering.

"I'm in charge" was all he said as he backed up from Menma, and began to follow Minato. Naruto smiled as he couldn't help and love how Kakashi tried to act dominant. Did he feel threatened by his power? Was it because he stirred something inside of Kakashi that made him realize something? Whatever it was, he loved watching it happen. He loved the confusion within Kakashi, and watching him struggle. Naruto jogged up to Minato and the rest, keeping his distance from Kakashi. He didn't want his future lover to kill him while he was still in the past.

Naruto sat on his bed, thinking about Sasuke. How could his best friend leave him? After everything they had been through, thick and thin, he just up and left. Sakura loved him more than anything, the village worshipped him, and Naruto was his best friend. The blond couldn't help but wonder what he could have done to prevent Sasuke from leaving and becoming the man he was. Hot tears fell from Naruto's eyes and onto the bed, burning his eyes to the point where he closed them. He was a terrible friend. He couldn't save Sasuke when Sakura needed him to.

"I'm worthless" he whispered. He had only felt the want and need to die a few times, mostly because of the villagers. But never as strong as it was now; it was consuming. Terrible thoughts filled his head, many of them gruesome with the deaths of his friends, at the hands of his best friends. He could see Sasuke slicing them open, ripping through their hearts with chidori. Each image more gruesome than before, each one making him cry harder. It would be his fault they die, it would be blood on his hands. He had to bring Sasuke back, and if he died trying, he would bring Sasuke with him, to death.

"You're not worthless, Naruto" a voice said softly, from behind him. Naruto opened his eyes and quickly turned around only to see Kakashi perched on his window. He softly smiled, mouthing a thank you. He could barely talk as it seemed his throat as closing up, his heart racing. It felt as if he couldn't breath at all. Kakashi stared at him, knowing fully well what was happening, and waited to see what would happen. He knew from experience exactly what Naruto was feeling: guilt. The guilt of not being able to save those you care about.

"And I know you're not worthless because you took Chidori so close to your heart. You defeated ninja that no one could, and have turned the coldest hearts warm. You inspire others to follow the path of kindness and love. You made me believe anything was possible, no matter what. You're nowhere near worthless" Kakashi said, eye smiling. Naruto could feel his breathing steady, his heart calming down. But there was still a heavy feeling weighing him down, drowning him. It practically crushed him.

"And how would you know, sensei. You never paid attention to me, only Sasuke. Just because I am strong doesn't mean I am worth anything. In the eyes of others I can be used and tossed away if I have no worth. And since I let Sasuke go, I have no worth. I didn't do my job" He said, lowly. He had one job, and that was to keep Sasuke in the village. When he was suffering silently, Naruto had fun. He could have helped him or even he could have tried harder to make Sasuke stay. He could have fought longer; he was so close to winning. But he didn't.

"I know because I am your sensei. I paid more attention to Sasuke because he needed more help than you. You have this amazing ability to adapt and overcome, in which he lacked in. I didn't put him over you in any way, in fact it's quite the opposite." He paused" You did everything to make him come back, and him leaving is not your fault. Never blame yourself for his actions" He said, an angry look in his eye.

"Thank you, sensei" he whispered. Kakashi stepped down from the window, and into Naruto's room. The blond's heart began to race as Kakashi got closer, his arms opening, closing around him. His eyes widened as Kakashi was never one to show physical affection, or even get physical in this way. Naruto, by instinct, wrapped his arms around Kakashi, pulling him closer. In his mind he knew very well that the small act was one to show comfort and support, but he couldn't help and think more. Something sparked deep down within him, a feeling he had felt before, but never to this degree.

"Kakashi, what were you thinking!? You could have been killed" Menma scolded as he helped defeat the ninjas attacking them. Kakashi had wanted to show off his chidori, killing the men attacking them. Of course it had began to falter, and he had to step in with Rasengan to help. Kakashi had not been pleased, and rather irritated that Menma had interfered with him. He was releasing all of his pent up anger, and because of Menma there was still some to spare. In his left hand chidori sparked to life, his palm raising upwards. Before he could attack Menma, Obito stepped in between them, Rin joining him.

"Kakashi-kun, don't! He is our fellow comrade, and we do not fight our comrades. If you're a true shinobi you would know that" Rin scolded. Kakashi's Chidori slowly went away, the sparks dying down. He turned away from Menma, walking away. Minato sighed as he knew just how stubborn and hard-headed Kakashi could be. They all knew that Kakashi wouldn't wander far as they had a mission, and a shinobi never abandons the mission.

"We'll split up. Kakashi, Menma, Rin and Obito you guys will be heading to the bridge. I will be on the front lines, but just in case I feel you guys are in trouble have this" Minato handed Menma a kunai, a three pronged one. It took everything within him to not smile at the kunai, the very one his father used. He nodded his head, slipping the Kunai into his pouch for later. Minato smiled as he vanished into thin air, leaving the four to go to the bridge. Naruto turned to look at the team, Kakashi now coming back to join them. Although he didn't want to admit it, he had no idea where the bridge was, and would have to rely on Kakashi to get them there.

"Well Kakashi, lead the way" He said, a smirk on his face.

Okay so I'm sorry for the short chapter and all, but I wanted to update so that everyone knew this story lived on, and this way you will be prepared for what happens. I forgot what happened during this part, so I am making some stuff up. Please remember that I am keeping it canon, but adding in some stuff and all. Sorry for not updating as I have been busy with my other works and school. I just get so distracted sometimes.
