Chapter One
Sumac plodded through the jungle, sidestepping strangler vines and dragontraps. Beside him, his much younger sister, Nettle, was carried by Sumac's mother, Poison Ivy. A crack of thunder rolled through the air as the swollen clouds heaved and released their rain. Sumac spread his large leafwings, his scales dappled with dark green and gold. Nettle whimpered quietly as the rain pelted her horns. Poison Ivy made a disapproving sound as they entered the decontamination chamber. The Leafwings remaining after the Tree Wars believed in strength over weakness, survival of the strong.
As the water rushed over his scales, Sumac shivered slightly. A flash of movement caught his eye as he spotted Cobra Lily, about his age, watching the seeds flicker away. The Leafwings watched all seeds carefully, in case a tree-seed passed by. Cobra Lily spotted them, her strange reddish wings snapping up. "Hello, Sumac, Poison Ivy, Nettle." She returned to her still position, more like a statue in Wasp Hive then a dragon. Sumac sighed heavily and pushed out of the decontamination chamber and into the camp. Dragons were milling all around, some with leaf pouches, others with Ironbark armor training, still more preparing dishes for the feast that night. Sumac spied a flicker of gold scales. Only one other dragon beside him had gold scales: Sundew. Indeed, the younger dragonet had a grumpy expression on her face like usual, while her mother, Commander Belladonna, barked an order at her.
"Sundew," Sumac greeted her. Sundew swiveled around to glare at him. "What do you want, Sumac?" she huffed. Belladonna frowned. "We'll continue this late, Sundew," then she swept away. Sumac glanced around, then answered, "I saw a cluster of aronia berries by the pond." Sundew's eyes brightened slightly. "Really! Great!" "SUMAC!" Poison Ivy called. Sumac grinned sheepishly. "Bye Sundew." Then he rushed away to the busy hunter-green form of his mother.
