I know Jo also said that Harry and Hermione should be together, so I am going to present my views on this topic...

So there are many reasons why I'll never ship Harry and Hermione together...

So here we go:

1. Their relationship will never work out...

As we all know, Hermione is very serious, so do Harry. Their relationship would be sort of boring... There would be happiness but only for a few moments like in this dance scene in DH.

But then Hermione left, sad. And the dance scene between them was not in the book. In the deathly hallows, Harry himself confessed to Ron that without him there was nothing to talk. Now imagine if they ended up together, now what???

They will again remain silent... Now does Hermione deserve silence???

2. They both are not true to each other...

I mean, if u have read the POA, when Hermione told Professor Mccgonical that Harry had got firebolt from someone, Harry and Ron were both annoyed with her, but Ron showed his anger by fighting and Harry said nothing... In my opinion, Harry would never be able to express his opinions in front of Hermione. And due to this they will never able to find what drawbacks they have...

3. They both are very much alike...

4. Their frustrations???

Harry and Hermione both work in the Ministry of Magic, now what about their frustrations??? They can't be able to take each other's frustration... Instead, they will take out their frustration in form of fightings( the real one)... Whereas Ron will always try to cheer her up when she will return home from work(like in cursed child!!!) In the cursed child, we can easily see the romance between Ron and Hermione...

I never have seen any tension between Harry and Hermione... They care for each other like sister does for her brother and vice-versa... In the Deathly Hallows book, Harry confessed to Ron that Hermione is like her sister and he loves him like a brother loves her sister... If u have ever noticed, Hermione was very happy when Harry was with Cho at first and then Ginny, there wasn't any insecurity of losing him but with Ron, she was feeling highly insecure and was afraid of losing Ron.

HARRY AND HERMIONE WOULD HAVE AN EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY TOXIC RELATION

Harry does not listen much to Hermione, he stopped talking to her about the firebolt (he never missed her once, Hagrid had to remind him about her, unlike in GOF after the fall out with Ron he always missed him), didn't give away the prince's book despite her repeatedly telling so (he only did after the Malfoy trouble), argued with her regarding the Hallows and decided the best time to prove her denial is wrong while she was injured after inhuman torture by Bellatrix, he is indifferent to her getting hurt:

Some claim Hermione was like his mentor, he always listens to her advice. Harry listens to her advice rarely than he ever does to Ron, look at how he treats her here:

"But... Harry, think about this," said Hermione, taking a step towards him, "it's five o'clock in the afternoon... the Ministry of Magic must be full of workers... how would Voldemort and Sirius have got in without being seen? Harry... they're probably the two most wanted wizards in the world... you think they could get into a building full of Aurors undetected?"

"I dunno, Voldemort used an Invisibility Cloak or something!" Harry shouted. "Anyway, the Department of Mysteries has always been completely empty whenever I've been -" "You've never been there, Harry," said Hermione quietly. "You've dreamed about the place, that's all."

"They're not normal dreams!" Harry shouted in her face, standing up and taking a step closer to her in turn. He wanted to shake her. "How d'you explain Ron's dad then, what was all that about, how come I knew what had happened to him?"

"IF YOU THINK I'M JUST GOING TO ACT LIKE I HAVEN'T SEEN -"

"Sirius told you there was nothing more important than you learning to close your mind!"

"WELL, I EXPECT HE'D SAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT IF HE KNEW WHAT I'D JUST-" (quoted OOTP)

Ron and Hermione argued a lot, but never was Ron so violent with Hermione. It was after repeated pleading that Harry decides to use the fireplace.

If anyone saw Hermione as mentor it was Ron:

"Come on, we've got to get this finished sometime before dawn," he said briskly to Harry, pulling Professor Sinistra's essay back towards him. Hermione was looking at Ron with an odd expression on her face.

"Oh, give them here," she said abruptly. "What?" said Ron. "Give them to me, I'll look through them and correct them," she said. "Are you serious? Ah, Hermione, you're a life-saver," said Ron, "what can I -?"

"What you can say is, promise we'll never leave our homework this late again," she said, holding out both hands for their essays, but she looked slightly amused all the same. (Quoted OOTP)

Again what Harry cared about Hedwig biting off Hermione's arms:

"He seemed to think it was best," said Hermione rather breathlessly. "Dumbledore, I mean." "Right," said Harry.

He noticed that her hands, too, bore the marks of Hedwigs beak and found that he was not at all sorry. (Quoted OOTP)

I can understand why Harry/Hermione is popular given they are the lead male and female, but Harry's relation with Hermione was weaker than the Ron-Harry and Ron-Hermione relation ever was. This is yet another proof:

"Remus, Remus, come back!" Hermione cried, but Lupin did not respond. A moment later they heard the front door slam.

"Harry!" wailed Hermione. "How could you?" "It was easy," said Harry. He stood up; he could feel a lump swelling where his head had hit the wall. He was still so full of anger he was shaking.

"Don't look at me like that!" he snapped at Hermione.

"Don't you start on her!" snarled Ron.

"No — no — we mustn't fight!" said Hermione, launching herself between them. (QUOTED DH)

Oh, I mentioned the proving Hermione wrong moment:

"No!" said Hermione, sounding frightened. "He can't know that, Harry, how could he — ?"

"Priori Incantatem," said Harry. "We left your wand and the blackthorn wand at the Malfoys', Hermione. If they examine them properly, make them re-create the spells they've cast lately, they'll see that yours broke mine, they'll see that you tried and failed to mend it, and they'll realize that I've been using the blackthorn one ever since." The little color she had regained since their arrival had drained from her face.

Ron gave Harry a reproachful look, and said, "Let's not worry about that now —" (DH)

And how often did Harry really like being left alone with Hermione:

"All right, all right, I won't tell him, then!" said Harry irritably. He got to his feet. "I'm going to bed. Tell Ron for me, will you?"

"Oh no," said Hermione, looking relieved, "if you're going that means I can go too, without being rude. I'm absolutely exhausted and I want to make some more hats tomorrow. Listen, you can help me if you like, it's quite fun, I'm getting better, I can do patterns and bobbles and all sorts of things now." Harry looked into her face, which was shining with glee, and tried to look as though he was vaguely tempted by this offer.

"Er... no, I don't think I will, thanks," he said. "Er- not tomorrow. I've got loads of homework to do..." And he traipsed off to the boys' stairs, leaving her looking slightly disappointed. (quoted OOTP)

Harry was a reckless rule breaker, Hermione was a naive rule follower, they had no chemistry at all. You will notice that fanfictions that have Harry/Hermione pairings make Harry an overly sympathetic sensitive and compassionate OOC character that he rarely was, Harry/Hermione fanfic Harrys and are nothing like the book Harry at all. Heres yet another toxicity, Harry's behaviour to Hermione after she saved him from Nagini:

"Harry," Hermione whispered so quietly he could hardly hear her. "I'm so, so sorry. I think it was me. As we were leaving, you know, the snake was coming for us, and so I cast a Blasting Curse, and it rebounded everywhere, and it must have — must have hit

—" "It was an accident," said Harry mechanically. He felt empty, stunned. "We'll — we'll find a way to repair it." "Harry, I don't think we're going to be able to," said Hermione, the tears trickling down her face. "Remember . . . remember Ron? When he broke his wand, crashing the car? It was never the same again, he had to get a new one." Harry thought of Ollivander, kidnapped and held hostage by Voldemort; of Gregorovitch, who was dead. How was he supposed to find himself a new wand?

"Well," he said, in a falsely matter-of-fact voice, "well, I'll just borrow yours for now, then. While I keep watch." Her face glazed with tears, Hermione handed over her wand, and he left her sitting beside his bed, desiring nothing more than to get away from her. (Quoted DH)

So who was Harry most compatible with? A rule breaker just like him:

"Are you telling me," said Hermione, "that you're going to go back —?"

"And get the book? Yeah, I am," said Harry forcefully. "Listen, without the Prince I'd never have won the Felix Felicis. I'd never have known how to save Ron from poisoning, I'd never have —"

"— got a reputation for Potions brilliance you don't deserve," said Hermione nastily.

"Give it a rest, Hermione!" said Ginny, and Harry was so amazed, so grateful, he looked up. "By the sound of it, Malfoy was trying to use an Unforgivable Curse, you should be glad Harry had something good up his sleeve!"

"Well, of course I'm glad Harry wasn't cursed!" said Hermione, clearly stung. "But you can't call that Sectumsempra spell good, Ginny, look where it's landed him! And I'd have thought, seeing what this has done to your chances in the match —"

"Oh, don't start acting as though you understand Quidditch," snapped Ginny, "you'll only embarrass yourself." Harry and Ron stared: Hermione and Ginny, who had always got on together very well, were now sitting with their arms folded, glaring in opposite directions. Ron looked nervously at Harry, then snatched up a book at random and hid behind it. Harry, however, little though he knew he deserved it, felt unbelievably cheerful all of a sudden, even though none of them spoke again for the rest of the evening. (Quoted HBP)

I have answered similar questions in the past but my approach this time is different, mostly I focused on Hermione's naiveness and indifference to certain things that made her totally incompatible with harry, but here I decided to show what a jerk the real book Harry (not the over-glorified movie and fan fiction versions) was to Hermione. Ron-Hermione had a balancing relation that grew over time, they have been hinted since their awkward hug on POA and how Ron always saw Hermione as a mentor and relied on her to help him, I have already given a homework example, here's one more:

"Harry caught the fish and I did my best with it! I notice I'm always the one who ends up sorting out the food because I'm a girl, I suppose!"

"No, it's because you're supposed to be the best at magic!" shot back Ron. (quoted DH)

They had their arguments but always patched up just like in POA when Ron got over her cat "supposedly eating his rat" and they hugged. But when Harry was angry at Hermione he was practically violent. By DH Ron had enough and stood up for her: "Don't you start on her!" snarled Ron."

But with Harry, he never ever apologies to Hermione for any time and he has practically been violent with her. Harry developed a very unpleasant short-tempered characteristic post GOF, in his defence he had more pressure on him than anyone else since witnessing Voldemort's return at the graveyard. But he took out his anger at those closest to him Ron and Hermione, and rarely apologized to Hermione, I have just given a few examples, read OOTP, HBP and DH and see yourself. While Ron was gone and Hermione cried Harry never once tried to comfort her, rather he busied himself watching Ginny's dot in the map. They were never like Marty Stu, Marry Stu as fanfictions/movies portray. The books are the real deal. It is plain obvious a cannon Harry-Hermione relation would have been extremely toxic and unhealthy !!

Because Harry Potter is not, and has never been, a love triangle.

It's sad, really, how so many people ask questions about Hermione's love life over and over again here on Quora, when that's not what the books are supposed to be about. It is sad that someone can ask why not everyone ships Hermione with someone she wasn't interested in or involved with at all in the original story.

Lots of people probably mistake Harry Potter for a story like Twilight, where the female protagonist, Bella Swan, have to choose between the handsome vampire and werewolf, who's both madly in love with her, despite her lack of personality and constant claims that she's a plain Jane. I was never a Twilight fan myself, but my friends were. They covered their walls with posters, and discussed if they belonged in "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" - that is, which guy do you prefer. The guy they liked the most should be the one who ended up with Bella, regardless of her preferences.

But this isn't, or shouldn't be, "Hermione Granger and her two lovers"." It's "Harry Potter and his two sidekicks", one of which happens to be a girl. Harry and Hermione show absolutely zero romantic interest in each other, for seven years.

I'm talking about the books now, by the way, not the movies. The books are the original story, and the movies messed up ... quite a lot of things, including this. They were directed by a known Harry/Hermione shipper, you see. So scratch all those scenes where Harry and Hermione are dancing, or talking to each other while Ron's barely visible in the background, or where Hermione and only Hermione throws herself in front of Harry. Those things aren't canon. Add, instead, a bit of this:

"After you left," he said in a low voice, grateful for the fact that Ron's face was hidden, "she cried for a week. Probably longer, only she didn't want me to see. There were loads of nights when we never even spoke to each other. With you gone..."

He could not finish; it was now that Ron was here again that Harry fully realized how much his absence had cost them.

"She's like my sister," he went on. "I love her like a sister and I reckon that she feels the same way about me. It's always been like that. I thought you knew."

And this:

"I told you there was something wrong with that Prince person," Hermione said, evidently unable to stop herself. "And I was right, wasn't I."

"No, I don't think you were," said Harry stubbornly. He was having a bad enough time without Hermione lecturing him; [...]

"Listen, without the Prince I'd never have won the Felix Felicis. I'd never have known how to save Ron from poisoning, I'd never have --"

"-- got a reputation for Potions brilliance you don't deserve," said Hermione nastily..

Done?

Good!

So, Harry Potter is the story about an emotionally abused child who discovers a hidden world with magic, strange creatures, a boarding school castle. Making friends and rivals, dealing with homework and bad teachers, playing Quidditch... And it's about how he finds out secrets from his dead parents' lives, how Voldemort returns, and Harry has to fight for his life and the fate of the Wizarding World. Romance is just a small part of the story, and yet some people act as if that's everything it is about.

Harry is the hero. He's got the strange backstory, he's The Boy Who Lived, he's the one the story centres around. Ron and Hermione are Harry's sidekicks. Neither of them would have been involved in the war if they hadn't befriended Harry. Both of them are equally important, and they have, sort of, the same roles in the story. Harry needs them, but they also tend to get separated from him in one way or another before each book's climax.

The two sidekicks, Ron and Hermione, have these purposes/roles:

Provide Harry with the things he lacks. Hermione is all about logic, solving mysteries, helping with academic works. Ron gives Harry a substitute family and keeps the trio together with humour and kindness.Give Harry, and the reader, new information about the wizarding world. Hermione knows history and theory about lots of things (the Devil's Snare dislikes sunlight). Ron knows about wizard culture (a mudblood is a racist word for a muggle-born).Argue with each other, so that the reader gets multiple ways to see things. They often represent the muggle-born and the (not racist) pureblood population when they. Since Harry, the protagonist, barely participates in those arguments, the reader is freer to decide what s/he thinks.Oh, and falling in love with each other, of course, as their own not-related-to-Harry side story. When they kiss in the end, we're supposed to say: "Yes! Finally!"

If Harry fell in love with Hermione, this great dynamics would be destroyed. Instead of the Hero and his two Sidekicks, we'd get the Hero, his Girlfriend and the Comic Relief. Both of them deserve better! Hermione is a great character of her own, who doesn't have to be paired with the male protagonist simply because she's female. The fact that Hermione happens to be a girl doesn't make her a potential girlfriend, because that's not her purpose in the story. And Ron, he's also a great character that deserves to be more than the least important person in the group, the comic relief.

But what about the characters?

Surely, they have their own reasons to not fall in love, right? I've done this before, but here it is again:

Unlike Bella Swan, Hermione actually has a personality and, therefore, not every boy wants to date her. Harry values her friendship very much, but he also thinks she's annoying, and the two of them doesn't have fun together without Ron. He loves Quidditch and prefers girls who like/play it too, but Hermione thinks Quidditch is a silly game. And Harry, he's too introvert for a girl like Hermione. He doesn't satisfy her needs to argue enough! He ignores her, then he explodes, scaring her to the point of tears.

Both of them, as they're portrayed in the books, are unhappy while alone together for too long, and they know it. There's no Harry/Hermione/Ron love triangle!

What would they get from this relationship upgrade? How would it make them happier or help them grow? Why, apart from some physical attraction, would they choose to move from friends into a couple? From what we see, the two of them alone together have a very harmonious and calm daily life - but also lonely. Neither of them is good at talking about their feelings or opening up. They don't have fun alone together, ever, in any of the books. Even the comfort they give each other is... silent. I can see it as a successful marriage - respectful, tranquil and awfully lonely - which is pretty successful if you're thinking in dynastic terms in middle ages... But not so nowadays. I just can't see a reason why they'd believe they'd be better as a couple than as friends (sure, they may get the hots for each other and try it out... But I'm talking about actually shifting into a relationship, not having some meaningless short fling). Apart from all these in-universe issues, there's the RL problem: it's so freaking boring. At worst, they're miserable trapped inside themselves and marching on as s couple because they believe they must - And if that's the story being told, it's not really shipping Harmony; At Best they have a calm quiet relationship with no real passion... Which amounts to no-one-cares-to-read-that. The only real issue H/H have to face as a couple would be Ron (and he's often so OOC on these that it's an offence to the term OOC); they have a very little internal struggle between them, other "problems" are external and mostly Harry's world-saving problems, not really Harry-and-Hermione's (as in, they could be there if they were only friends or would be there if his girlfriend was anyone else, so that's not about Her-self). And I say this after reading hundreds and hundreds of H/H fanfics (They used to be s very popular side pairing to Draco/Ginny which was my favourite pairing for a long time - very often D/G would be a side-pair in a H/Hr fanfic too... And I suffered through a lot of it).

Thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

Um... any arguments please leave down below. XD
