Severus Snape and Remus Lupin were very similar to each other and quite compatible. (They're also my OTP!) I heard that this pairing was quite popular after the book release of GoF, and it's still quite popular today. Contrary to what most think, it really isn't a rarepair. (A good example would be the well-loved and very popular fanfiction series on AO3, the secret language of plants.)
Severus and Remus both just wanted to fit in as kids. The difference was that Remus was desperate and Severus was not. Remus was very cowardly at a young age and Severus was not, but they both were academically inclined, quiet, and bookish. Both were very high in their class rankings in terms of grades, and both of them grew up to be very accomplished wizards. If James and Sirius hadn't gotten to Remus first, I think he and Severus would've been very good friends. Remus was certainly more tolerant than Lily was, and he would've been more tolerant of Severus's fascination with the Dark Arts. (DADA was most likely his favorite subject, and you have to know about the Dark Arts in order to defend yourself against them. He was also a Dark Creature.)
Unlike the popular belief among lots of fans, Severus wasn't as confident or as unfeeling or as ruthless as people portray him to be. That was a façade. He had feelings, just like everyone else, and I think Remus would be able to have the emotional capacity to love him. He never had a bad word to say against Severus, even after the latter killed Dumbledore. In fact, he was particularly harsh when describing Sectumsempra as "Snape's work." Sounds like he felt betrayed (I know, it's speculation. It's my opinion, remember?) Before that, he always referred to him as "Severus" when talking directly to him or "Professor Snape" when talking to Harry.
In Prisoner of Azkaban, Severus was quite civil to Remus. To me (now that I look at it) it seemed like they were trying to repair their damaged relationship (no, not romantic). He wasn't mean or disparaging to Remus when he delivered the Wolfsbane to him. He even assured Remus that "there's a cauldronful if you need any more." I think that was particularly fluffy. I mean, honestly! That warmed my heart so much when I reread the quote on a post here on Quora.
I don't think they would've necessarily have been able to become lovers during school (though I love reading fics where that happens). But, they could've become something more than friends during Prisoner of Azkaban. There were no James or Sirius to deter him, so he was free to act of his own accord. But the window would have passed by the time Sirius would have returned, and the opportunity would be gone. (Again, this doesn't deter me from reading fics where they do get together as the Order of the Phoenix is reinstated.)
But anyway, I've said my piece on my favourite ship in the entire HP universe. Feel free to comment on what you think, but keep them civil, please. I don't want to be flamed.
