Chapter 5 - Secrects Are Meant To Be Unspoken

You decided it was right to tell your best friend the truth about Jim, about his job and his personality, but you weren't sure how.

"Well you're on time today so I'm guessing nothing happened last night with Jim?" Gwen teased with a smirk when you got to the café.

"I'd have to say that depends on what you mean by 'nothing'." You say with a slight giggle and a big grin.

Gwen's eyes grew wide in excitement and a huge smile formed on her face. You knew she'd been waiting a long time to hear something like this again from you. "Ooooooh! Girl, give me details!" She squealed excitedly.

"You'll get the details if you come over again today. I've got something else I need to talk to you about that's a bit more, uh, secretive." You tell her with an almost hushed voice. You really didn't need anyone else to inquire about this "little" secret of yours. Gwen quickly agreed to come over, knowing it was the only way to hear about what kind of "nothing" happened between you and Jim.

You weren't sure if he would like you telling her the truth so you decided to ask.

Is it OK if I tell Gwen about last night?

-(y/i)

****
Of course, love

-JM

****
Would it also be OK if I told her about you? She deserves to know the truth about the man I'm seeing.

-(y/i)

****
No. You cannot tell others about me. They won't understand. Their feelings will get in the way.

-JM

****
Please. It's only Gwen, she won't tell anyone I promise.

-(y/i)

There was no response which you assumed meant no still and you knew he would only get angrier if you kept badgering him about it.

You argued with yourself the rest of your shift, trying to figure out if you were actually going to tell her or not, despite Jim's text. You had stopped while grabbing your things before leaving when more thoughts crossed your mind.

'Gwen should know the truth and the fact that I could be in danger because of this relationship...but on the other hand Jim doesn't want others to know about it so he can keep me safe and keep his identity safe from the police. But she's my best friend and I've never kept a big secrect from her before...'

You were abruptly pulled out of your thoughts when Gwen waved her hand in front of your face, "Earth to y/n. Earth to y/n."

Letting out a small laugh, you look at Gwen and smile before apologizing, telling her that you'd zoned out while thinking.

"I could tell and by the look on your face it seemed quite serious."

"It's nothing too important. Just something I read about earlier. Shall we head back to my place now?" You lie, quickly trying to change the subject.

She nods, grinning as she grabs her purse, "Let's go. I've waited long enough for details about last night."

You roll your eyes and laugh at her comment as the two of you start walking to your flat.

~
Not even 5 seconds after you stepped through the door Gwen was asking about what happened last night.

"The waiting has just been killing you, hasn't it?" You say snickering a bit.

She let out a small laugh before answering, "Yeah it has. It's been so long since we got to sit down together and giggle about boys like school girls, so what do you except me to do when you tell me you've done something with a guy?"

You grin and begin telling her about how it started, just saying Jim had come over to talk about 'something' since you still weren't sure if you were going to tell her the truth or not.
As you were retelling the moments Gwen would occasionally let out a small "ooooh" or a giggle. When you started talking about the kiss getting more intimate you could tell she was thinking it was going to lead to something more and you knew you should say something before she got too excited about it.

"Nothing happened after this though. He broke the kiss and told me he had something time sensitive he was working on so he had to get home. It was a bit anticlimactic but I'm guessing there will be more moments like this in the future." You tell her with a half smile and a small laugh. "Hopefully ones that end a bit more excitingly." You add with a grin.

"Of course there will be! Jim sounds like he's really into you and I'm glad you've finally found someone you can feel for again. I was worried for a while that you would end up as a crazy cat lady." Gwen told you with a goofy smile on her face. Words that she would later forget. You both laugh at the thought of her last sentence. Things like this made you glad that she was your best friend.

You knew Jim had told you not to tell her but you felt like it was the right thing to do. The two of you had stopped laughing by now and your expression had changed from silly to serious. "Gwen, there's something I need to tell you."

She could sense the importance in your voice and a look of concern came over her face. "What is it y/n?"

"Well first you have to promise to not tell anyone what I'm about to tell you, okay?" You ask, not too sure anymore if this was a good idea, but Gwen nodded and promised so you continued.

"It's about Jim, he...he-"

"Did he hurt you? Has he threatened you?" Gwen's voice had a tinge of panic in it. She was always worried about this kind of thing since your last boyfriend was a bit abusive.

"No, no. He hasn't done anything to me. I'm fine, but because of Jim's job I might not always be. He's a...uh, well...he's a consulting criminal." You tell her quickly, your voice getting quieter as you spoke, so it was just above a whisper when you finished.

Gwen furrowed her brows together and her lips formed a frown. "What do you mean by consulting criminal?"

You speak slowly as your mind kept thinking of his text, "People go to him when they need certain things taken care of. Need a new life, Jim can take care of that. Need drugs or weapons, Jim can take care of that. Need someone... gone-"

"HE KILLS PEOPLE?" Gwen shrieked before covering her mouth. Horror glazing over her eyes.

"Well yes and no, I mean he doesn't do it himself usually-" You say quietly as you realize why Jim didn't want you to tell anyone, but Gwen cut you off again before you could finish.

"You know this man is psychopathic and that he kills for a living and you're still with him? Making out with him even? Why? Is he forcing you to stay with him?" Gwen asked urgently, wanting to know if you were being held hostage in your relationship.

You looked down at the floor, trying to find the right words to say. "No...its my choice. I know that this sounds weird, no...insane, but I-I've fallen in love with this man, despite what he does and has done." You finally tell her. You sigh and mutter, "I should've known you'd react this way. I should've just listened to Jim and not told you..."

Gwen closed her eyes and started shaking her head while walking towards the door. "You've gone mad! He's insane and no matter what he's told you, I doubt he really feels anything for you. Psychopaths don't have feelings! He doesn't love you and he never will! We've got to turn him into the police, y/n. You've got to check back into reality now and do the right thing."

"You don't know what you're talking about! He does have feelings for me and I'm not turning him in!" You yell at her, anger bubbling up inside you.

You couldn't believe that she was saying this to you, she didn't know Jim like you did. Although you'd only known him for such a small amount of time it felt like you've known him even longer than you knew Gwen, but you weren't sure why.

Gwen was slightly shaking from anger and fear. She was set on going to Scotland Yard and you knew there was only one way to stop her from leaving your flat, guilt tripping.

"You promised not to tell anyone." Was the only thing that left your mouth. Your voice was somehow calm and steady now, although you were still angry. You knew this simple sentence would get to her and it did, just not exactly how you wanted it to. She turned around quickly, letting go of the doorknob and looked directly into your eyes as she narrowed hers.

"Some promises are meant to be broken, y/n. This is definitely one of those kind." She said with a tone of superiority, as if she thought you were stupid for thinking a silly little promise could change anything.

"Only if you want me dead, Gwen."

"We'll just tell the police you need to go into hiding until he's caught-" She started saying as if it was obvious.

Anger was coursing through you now, you'd never been this angry with Gwen before. "First off, stop saying we will do these things. I'm not going to turn him in! Secondly, he's the most dangerous man in Europe, possibly the world. He won't ever get caught unless he wants to and he would be able to find me wherever they try to hide me." You clench your fists at your sides and suppress the urge to just scream.

Suddenly there's a knock at your door and you see Gwen's face drain of color. "Is that him?" She asks, her voice barely auditable. You shrug and feel the anger lessen in your mind as fear starts to creep in.

Gwen looked out the peephole and let out a sigh of relief as she turned towards you, "It's only Sherlock and John."

This made you let out a sigh of relief too, knowing how mad Jim could be at you when, or if, he finds out you told her the truth. "You can let them in but don't mention anything I've said." Your voice threatening.

Gwen nodded as she opened the door and you put on a fake smile. "Evening Sherlock, John. Is something wrong?" You say kindly trying to hide evidence of the anger and fear that was in your eyes only moments ago.

John returned the greeting, but Sherlock looked around the living room, then at you, then Gwen before saying anything. "We've heard some yelling and just wanted to make sure everything was okay here." He looked at you again, studying your face, "What was the argument about?"

"Oh um, nothing. Just how something was handled by someone at work today. They thought it should've been handled their way but I think differently." You tell him, glaring at Gwen when mentioning the other 'someone'.

Sherlock turned to Gwen and asked if this was true. She looked to you then at the ground before nodding. Gwen was never good at lying and she knew how well Sherlock could deduce that.

He seemed a bit skeptical of her answer but you guessed he didn't really care if it was the truth or not because he said goodbye then left. John apologized for Sherlock's nosy questions and told you to come to their flat if you needed to talk before saying goodbye and leaving.

As soon as John had shut your door your phone buzzed. You check it to see a new text message. You're sure you must have been as pale as a ghost when you read it.

I know what you did and I'm not pleased, kitten...

-JM

Just the fact that he somehow found out about you telling Gwen about him terrified you, but the new nickname added to the sinking feeling in your stomach.

You usually liked being called cute names but this one seemed out of place in the context of the message. You knew Jim had a reason for it and you really didn't want to find out what it was.
