Chapter 15 - Kitten
You didn't even realise you had drifted off during the film until you woke up with a blanket on you and a pillow under your head. "Jim..?" You called sleepily as you sat up and rubbed your eyes.
No reply.
You got up and looked at the time. It was almost noon. You walked to Jim's office and knocked.
No reply.
You opened the doors and walked over to his desk and saw a small blue post-it note with "Irene's flat @ 11:30" stuck right at the front.
'Jim never writes client appointments down so who the hell is Irene?' You thought to yourself angrily and grabbed the sticky note and put it in your pocket. You checked your phone and saw that Jim sent you a message a little after 11 saying he went out for work. You knew he was lying but you didn't reply. After deciding to go in to work for a few hours you went upstairs and got changed into a casual outfit and got a cab to the cafe. You were a little disappointed to find out Gwen wasn't working that shift but you needed the extra time to make up for some lost shifts while you were at Jim's.
You worked for a few hours before taking a small break, stepping outside in the back and checking your phone.
3 new messages; 2 missed calls
"Jim..." you sighed and decided to call back after checking the messages that asked where you were and why you didn't leave any note or message about where you were going.
*Ring ring, ring ri-*
"Where are you?!" Jim asked worriedly right when he picked up rather quickly.
"Went in to get a few shifts in at the cafe. Jesus, calm down." You said, still a little irritated from earlier.
"You're dating me, the most wanted man in London by police and other criminals, you could've been kidnapped for God's sake! I was worried about you!"
"It's always about you, isn't it? Can't you just trust me for once?" You snapped. There was a moment of silence.
"It's everything okay, kitten?" Jim asked softly.
"Yeah, just dandy. Don't worry, just stressful work today. I'll be home soon." You said with a sigh and shook your head, you knew you probably overreacted and shouldn't be angry but you found yourself already ending the call and putting your phone in your pocket. A few moments later it buzzed and you checked the message.
'I love you, kitten. Have a surprise for you when you get home <3
-JM xoxo'
You felt bad and decided to forget about the note unless you got further evidence of anything suspicious happening. You messaged back.
'Can't wait to find out what it is. I love you too dear
-(y/i)'
You ate a quick lunch and clocked out a half hour later. You started walking back to Jim's but then decided that getting a cab there would lessen the possibility of being followed or attacked. You still had the thought of Chris stalking you in the back of your mind. If he was in London you knew he'd come looking for an upfront meeting sooner or later. Jim would protect you though, you were sure of it. Chris wouldn't stand a chance against him. You pushed those thoughts out though as soon as you walked up to the front door of the Moriarty estate.
You opened the door and stepped in. "I'm home!" You called and heard hurried footsteps coming towards you from another room.
"Finally." Jim chuckled and pulled you into a hug and kissed you. You smiled up at him and kissed back.
"So what's that surprise you were talking about?" You asked, eager to find out.
"Close your eyes." He grinned and walked into the other room. You did so and heard him come back and stop in front of you. "Alright, open." You opened your eyes and saw Jim holding a very small cat.
"Oh my gosh! You got me a kitten!" You smiled and gently took it from Jim and held it happily.
"Mmmhm. A kitten for my kitten." He chuckled and put his hands in his pockets. "When I was coming home from -er, work today I saw a man selling them on the street corner and I decided to get you one. This one is a girl by the way." He grinned then kissed your cheek.
"Aw thank you, Jim. I love her." You looked down at the black and white fluff ball and smiled. "I'll name her....Oreo." The kitten looked up at you and mewed softly when you said the name.
"I think she likes it." Jim chuckled as he watched you lovingly. He was glad to see you so joyful and excited.
You took Oreo up to your room and let her play on the bed with an old scarf you never wore anymore. Jim joined you after finishing some work in his office. He laid down on the bed and Oreo climbed up on top of him and you smiled. "She makes you look 1,000 times less dangerous than you are."
"Well good thing I'm not gonna be taking her on jobs with me then. Though I'm sure she'd be a great distraction for everybody with her cuteness." He chuckled and pet her gently. "Of course you're way cuter, love." He winked and you blushed.
"Oh hush." You giggled and laid down next to him and Oreo. "We should go out for dinner tonight. Nothing fancy, just a casual place."
"That sounds nice. Any particular place in mind?" Jim smiled softly and look into your eyes. You looked into his and were lost in them, they were so mysterious yet so inviting. You didn't say anything and instead leaned closer to him and kissed him lovingly. Jim grinned as he kissed back and placed his hand on your cheek.
"How about going to Bailey's?" You asked softly as you broke the kiss. Jim laughed and rubbed his thumb across your cheek gently.
"Sure, kitten. Wherever you want to go we'll go."
"What will we do with Oreo while we're out?" You asked as you picked up the kitten and pet her carefully.
"We can put her in the bathroom and put some towels and blankets down. Then she can't get hurt or lost in the house." He said with a small smile.
Two hours later you both got ready to leave. You put on a cream-coloured jumper and an above knee skirt with converse while Jim kept on his suit. "That's a bit much for a fish and chips shop, love." You giggled and gestured to his outfit. He rolled his eyes and chuckled as he took off his suit jacket.
"How about now?" He asked as he threw the jacket on the back of the couch.
"That's better, but roll up your sleeves. Makes you look sexier." You smirked playfully and grabbed your purse. "Ready to go?" Jim nodded and grabbed his keys and you walked out the door. He followed and locked the front door before you both got in the car. "When was the last time you went to a casual place for food?" You asked as Jim started the car.
"Its been a very long time, to say the least." He chuckled. You laughed and pecked his cheek.
"That's why I'm here." You teased.
He grinned and shook his head. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Once at Bailey's you two ordered some dinner and ate and talked and had a pleasantly "ordinary" evening. No fancy manners or food, just comfortable chatting and some fish and chips. It reminded you of your childhood, always going out with your dad to get dinner because he was never good at working the stove. For Jim the experience was relaxing, the people around him didn't know or care about him unlike the rich past and potential clients that frequented his usual choice restaurants.
"Let's come here more often." He smiled from across the table as he finished eating. You beamed back at him.
"So you enjoyed this 'peasant' food?" You teased and Jim chuckled and shook his head slightly.
"Didn't realise how much I missed it until now. 5 star restaurants may have gourmet meals but places like these..." he glanced around fondly, "..They put themselves into their food. They aren't cooking to get a pay check or to show off their culinary skills, they're cooking to make people happy." Jim's eyes were shining from the light above the table and you saw some life in them for once; a strange happiness swimming in a pool of cold, dark waters.
"Jim, when was the last time you were truly happy?" You asked softly, still staring into his mysterious eyes.
"When we talked about our feelings for each other probably." He grinned but you just shook your head and looked down slightly.
"I mean, before we met and everything. When was the last time you experience really happiness?" You asked again, some sort of mixture of sadness and pity leaked out into your words. Jim frowned slightly and looked down in thought. After a few moments he looked up at you again.
"Doesn't matter. Thats not important." He said bluntly and his eyes went back to being the dead void they were before stepping into the restaurant. The topic was closed; even though you still had questions and wanted answers, you left it at that and moved on.
"Let's go home and check on Oreo. Don't want to leave her alone for too long." You smiled as you tried to get Jim smiling again too. After grabbing your purse you stood up. "I'm gonna run to the loo really quick, then we can go, alright?" Jim nodded and pulled out his phone to check messages while he waited. You walked to a small hallway off to the side where there was a small green bathrooms sign with an arrow. It wasn't far down and it was empty when you entered. You went into a stall and heard the bathroom door open followed by footsteps walking right up to your door. From underneath you could tell they were wearing men's work boots and dirty jeans. You held your breath as your heart started thumping against your chest.
"He might be your protection, but trust me (y/n)...He won't always be around..." threatened a low, deep voice.
Chris...
The shoes turned and walked out with a light thud, thud, thud against the floor before the door opened and closed once more. You felt like passing out, screaming, and throwing up all at the same time. Had he followed you? Or was a coincidence that you both were around the same place. Knowing that creep, it was probably the first one. You stayed in the bathroom for a few extra minutes while you tried to calm yourself back down before walking back out to Jim.
"Let's go now." You said as you stopped yourself from shaking. Jim looked at you and could tell something wasn't right so he grabbed your hand and walked out the door quickly. Once you were both back in the car you stayed silent, too paranoid to talk yet. It didn't feel real, it felt too terrifying to be true.
"Are you okay? Did something happen?" Jim was obviously worried now and glanced over at you a few times while trying to get back home quickly. You nodded slightly and whimpered "Chris.."
"Who?" Jim asked while furrowing his brows. "What happened back there?" He pulled up to the drive way and parked the car. You shook your head and started sobbing. Jim got out of the car and walked around to your side and opened your door. "Lets go inside, love. You can talk when you're ready."
He held you close to him with his hand on your waist while you walked up to the door. Once inside he pulled you into a loving hug and rubbed your back gently. "It's alright, (y/n), I'm here. Nothing is going to happen."
You looked up at him while still crying. "My ex....wants to....k-kill you." You took a deep breath. "And...pr-probably me too..." You buried your face into his shirt again and continued crying with muffled sobs.
"Then I'll kill him first. No one ever threatens me or my kitten and lives." Jim reassured you and kissed the top of your head. "Either Seb or I will be with you at all times until he's 6 feet under. Nothing will happen to you."
You believed him and felt a lot less worried but you had a gut feeling that even with the protection Chris was going to get his revenge.
